Ohio State vs James Madison 11/12/09

I liked Turner leading the "clapping" after Simmons dove for a ball out of bounds. He put his hands over his head and clapped in a way to sort of let the crowd know this sort of effort needs to be applauded.

He's playing with some fire and intensity this year. Big time leader. Hope the guys continue to follow. :)

I liked how all four of his teammates rushed over to help him up and give him props.
I just can't get over the talent at swingman... Diebs, Turner, Buford, Lighty.... has to be best in the country at the 2-3
How 'bout Diebs, Turner, Buford, Lighty, Cook, Oden, Conley and Kufos? My god...

I digress. I was just looking at the box score and was very impressed that not one JMU player hit double figures. That is solid defense!

Am I right to point out that we are playing a lot of man to man so far? Anyone think we continue to play m2m when we get into the more talented part of our schedule?
Yup, Thad has said that the guys were just too young last year to grasp the man to man concepts and still learn the offense. In addition to that, they were not very deep last year and playing man-to-man all the time can really wear a team down during the course of the season. I think we might see some zone against teams that really outsize us if our rebounding suffers. That will be a key next week against UNC. All of them will have to rebound not just Turner.

As cbf40 mentioned earlier, I also would not be surprised to see us out run North Carolina next week. That might be a good way to where those big guys down.

i thought there were two main downsides to a zone. rebounding and perimeter shooting

Rebounding has always been a weakness under Thad, imo. A few superior players have compensated at times, but that's one area that's left something to be desired.

Right after Turner (finally) got a rest, there was a stretch of about 15 seconds where JMU had 4 guys grabbing offensive boards and missing layups while Lauderdale battled them on his own. The other Bucks weren't even in the paint....

Turner came right back into the game after that.

I agree with you, but i'm wondering how much of that has been b/c of the zone defense we've primarily run.

Well, we are not playing a zone defense this year and as was pointed above we are still lacking in the rebounding area. So much of that is desire and hustle. Syracuse plays zone defense quite a bit over the years and they do not get outrebounded like we did in the past two years. Lighty and Lauderdale will have to step it up this year. Turner cannot be the only one rebounding.

Matta builds a team more for offense and being able to stretch a defense, which means a 4 that usually is not a big time rebounder...

Hunter was a good rebounder, so was Sullinger, but guys like Sylvester, Harris, Madsen, Lighty are either undersized at the 4 to be able to rebound with some bigger 4's or not good rebounders.

I don't have a problem with the scheme, but I just think if we are looking for the 4 position to stretch the defense we will need a big time rebounder in the middle, and some help from the wings and be able to rebound as a team...
