‘It is what it is’ — Lane Kiffin and FAU Prepare for Opener at Ohio State
During his weekly Monday media session a couple of days ago, Florida Atlantic head coach Lane Kiffin previewed Saturday’s upcoming game with the fifth-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes.
Among the tidbits revealed about his own team is that starting punter Sebastian Riella is likely out following a knee injury during a scrimmage this past Saturday. Riella’s backup is redshirt freshman Matt Hayball, who is Australian, which means the Owls should be fine.
Kiffin is also declining to name a starting quarterback, but all expectations are that it will be incumbent Chris Robison, who threw for 2,540 yards with 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions last year.
This is the second year in a row that Florida Atlantic will open the season on the road against a Top 10 opponent. Last year it was No. 7 Oklahoma.
Does he like opening at Ohio State this year?
“There’s a lot of different ways to go about these things,” Kiffin said. “Obviously, I didn’t schedule these. These were scheduled before we got here. I don’t think it is the best idea, especially following with UCF, another team that has been a top-10 team the last two years.”
What he would prefer is Big Name Conferences, but smaller-name schools.
“The format that I think is the best, because you have to make money, you can’t not play these games, but you can play somebody that pays the same, because the conference pays the same for the most part,” he said.
“It is not that big of a difference. So, you play teams from major conferences. You just play, not necessarily, the team that year-in-and-year out is the best team in the conference. It is what it is. I’m excited for our kids to be able to go play at a place like that.”
