Ohio State Softball 2010 Season

Boom! Herron Hits Grand Slam in Ohio State's 8-7 Come From Behind Win

After trailing Oregon State, 7-2, through six innings, the No. 16/17 Ohio State softball team recorded five runs in the top of the seventh, thanks to a grand slam from sophomore Alicia Herron, to tie the game and won an 8-7 decision in the eighth as senior Leah Ledford notched an RBI single Saturday at the 2010 Cathedral City Classic.

In storybook fashion, the Buckeyes loaded the bases with two outs and Herron up at-bat. After going 0-3 at the plate, the Cypress, Calif., native pushed everything out of her mind and on a full count, Herron knocked the ball over the left centerfield fence to knot things up at 7-all. Prior to the grand slam, Rachael Shepherd hit an RBI single to bring in Karisa Medrano from second for the five-run inning.

The Lady Bucks defeated USF and Cornell before losing at UCF. Then they opened the Big Ten season with a series against Wisconsin, which they swept 6-4 and 12-4. The Ladies continued their hot stretch by taking 2 from the Ohio Bobcats 9-4 and 9-3 and defeating Butler 7-5. 2 games with Purdue were rained out last weekend.

The Ladies are now sitting at 33-12 (12-2), Ranked 19th nationally and in second place in the Big Ten, behind #2 Michigan.

The Lady bucks recorded their first softball win over Michigan since 2003 last weekend, taking game one of the two game series 5-3. They flirted heavily with sweeping the scUMmers before dropping game two 4-3.

This weekend, they are on the road to Penn State and then home to wrap up the regular season on May 14th and 15th against Northwestern.

It seems this year will see the graduation of Ohio State's biggest offensive threat ever in Sam Marder, but the arrival of possibly the program's best pitcher ever in Melanie Nichols.
