Ohio State Softball 2010 Season

scooter1369

HTTR Forever.
A thread for the upcoming season of the Lady Bucks 2010 campaign. Coming off the most successful season in program history (47-11 record and a trip to the Super Regionals), the Bucks have a few holes to fill on this year's roster, most notably in the circle where ace pitcher Kim Reeder has graduated.

Sam Marder Named Jewish Scholastic Female Athlete of the Year

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sam Marder, Ohio State's two-time All-American catcher, was selected the female "Marty Glickman Outstanding Jewish Scholastic Athlete of the Year" for 2010 by The National Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and Museum Committee last Tuesday. Jon Scheyer, a senior guard on the Duke men's basketball team, was named the male honoree.

Story continued

Sam also received this award as a High School student.

We have seniors Megan Miller (5-0, 1.91era) and Lindsay Bodeker(16-5, 2.00era) returning, which gives us some experience in the circle. Reeder's power will be missed, so we need a freshman pitcher to really step up and fill that gap. Courtney Pruner can pitch, but her defensive skills are needed elsewhere and her power at the plate will be needed daily. Reeder, Bodeker and Miller were the only three players to pitch for OSU last season.

This will be Sam Marder's senior season. Sam continues to be Ohio State's biggest threat at the plate (.343, 19HR, 43RBI). Without some real power to protect her, she will once again face a season of IBBs (18 last season in 140 ABs).

During conference play, Marder had 39 ABs, 38 BBs (13 IBBs). She managed only 10 hits(1 double and 3 HRs), and 7 RBI's. Pitchers simply avoid her like the plague. Despite only 10 hits, Marder scored 12 runs during conference play.

1B Tory Haddad (.307avg, 5HR, 32 RBI .458slg%) is gone and will be missed.

Returning are Sophomore SS Alicia Herron (.321, 14HR, 48RBI), Senior 1B/P/OF Courtney Pruner (.289. 12HR, 46RBI) and Senior SS/2B Whitney Cooper (.321, 5HR, 30RBI).

A player that cannot be overlooked is Junior 2B Dee Dee Hillman. Last season, Hillman started 54 of 57 games.
She stole 17 bases on 18 attempts, had a .297BA and scored 37 runs. Hillman is a switch hitting speedster who is a dangerous slap bunter with a postage stamp strike zone (5'1" tall). Last season she was third on the team with 21 walks (Marder 67, Pruner 29)

Is there any chance Sam Marder will go pro after the '10 season? We have a pro team here in Akron and she would certainly be a great addition and wouldn't have the IBB problem with players like Katie Cochran and Sam Ricketts in the same lineup.

There is a very good chance Marder could look into playing professionally. And I think a few teams would be very interested in her. She is not just a powerful bat. She's also a first class defender at catcher.

Ali Viola Promoted to Associate Head Coach

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Linda Kalafatis, 14th-year head coach of the Ohio State softball team, announced the promotion of Ali Viola to associate head coach of the Buckeyes Wednesday. Viola will be serving her fifth year at Ohio State in 2010, working primarily with the Buckeye infield, as well as tutoring the team's power hitters.

"Ali is very deserving of this promotion," Kalafatis said. "She brings a lot of experience to this program after coaching at four different universities. Ali has been an instrumental part of this program so I was proud to announce the decision to the team today."

Viola has shared the credit for the Buckeyes' success over the last few seasons - including their run to the 2009 NCAA Super Regionals, one of Ohio State's three appearances at the national tournament (2006, '07, '09) in her four years with the program.

"I am appreciative Linda felt I had earned this position," Viola said. "It confirms we are on the same page and know what we want to do with this program. The success from the past few seasons shows that what we are doing is working."

In just her second season, Viola assisted in guiding the Buckeyes to a Big Ten Championship in 2007.

I have met and spoken with coach Viola several times and she is a huge part of this team's success over the last few years. She is a young, energetic coach who's upbeat attitude, confidence and knowledge have brought a lot to the program. With HC Linda Kalafatis in her 14th season with Ohio State, Viola could very well be the heir apparent to take over in a few years.

Congratulations Coach Viola. Well deserved promotion.

Buckeyes Ranked 14th in USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Preseason Poll

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 14 has become a very significant number to the Ohio State softball team and most recently it represents the Buckeyes' rank in the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Preseason Poll, released Tuesday.

A season ago, Ohio State, who returns 14 letterwinners in 2010, spent 14-consecutive weeks in the national rankings. The Scarlet and Gray debuted at No. 23 Feb. 20 and continued to climb the poll all the way through their NCAA Super Regional run in May, concluding the season with the highest ranking in program history at 12th. The 14 weeks spent in the Top 25 set an Ohio State record for consecutive weeks in the polls.

OSU also has earned a preseason ranking of 16th from the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 preseason poll.

Nice to see the ladies get some preseason props on the national scene.

Marder Named to 2010 USA Softball Player of the Year Top 50 Watch List

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sam Marder, Ohio State's two-time All-American catcher, has been selected to the 2010 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Top 50 Watch List, the Amateur Softball Association of America announced Wednesday.

This award, which Marder has been a finalist for the past two seasons, is considered the most prestigious honors in Division I women's collegiate softball and is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country.

Known for her prowess at the plate, Marder already owns the Ohio State home run record with 43 in her career, despite leading the NCAA in bases on balls as both a sophomore (60) and junior (67). In three seasons, she has been walked 171 times, which also ranks as the most in school history.

Sam Marder continues to draw accolades.

Sam Marder Named Big Ten Player of the Week

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sam Marder, a senior catcher on the No. 14/16 Ohio State softball team, was named Big Ten Player of the Week Monday after helping the Buckeyes to a 4-1 start opening weekend at the Marriot Houston Hobby Classic in Houston, Texas.

The Calabasas, Calif., native batted .500 through five games, including a 1.700 slugging percentage, and recorded six RBI. Marder hit four home runs, including two off of first pitches and three first inning shots. She now has 47 career home runs, distancing herself from second place in Ohio State's all-time record book by six. The two-time All-American has 152 career RBI and is just 14 away from tying the program record.

Against No. 15 Baylor Saturday, her second-inning homer jump started the Buckeyes' 4-3 comeback win. Batting in the No. 2 spot, Marder sent in the first runs vs. Sam Houston State, Baylor, No. 21 Louisville and Kansas this weekend.

Marder was walked eight times, including four intentional, for a .722 on base percentage. She has been walked 179 times in her career, the most in Buckeye history. Since she joined Ohio State in 2007, Marder has been put on base intentionally 42 times - by far the most in school history since 1998 with two former players in second for sixth.

Behind the plate, she recorded 37 putouts and three assists with no errors.

The weekly award is the fifth in her career from the Big Ten.

When she leaves, the bar is going to be set pretty high.

Lady Bucks finish second at Hatter Invitational

Ladies had a rough weekend, going 2-3 at the Hatter Invitational (Hosted by Stetson University) in Deland, Florida.

They finished second in the tournament and managed wins over host Stetson and Rhode Island, but dropped three games to #8 Alabama.

Alabama Senior pitcher Kelsi Dunne Had two of the wins over Ohio State. She is the real deal folks. She holds several Florida state High School records at Spruce Creek High School in Port Orange (my brother's Alma Mater).

Sam Marder continues to kill the ball, smashing homeruns number 5,6,7 and 8 and RBI #13. That's 8 Dingers in 10 games. On pace to hit 32 if she keeps that up. But she won't see too many hittable pitches during Big Ten play. Not a single team in the league can afford to pitch to her. By comparison, the rest of the Buckeyes have 4 homeruns and 23 RBI's total. And keep in mind Marder also leads the team in walks (11) and IBB (6). 10 games in and she has already drawn 6 IBB. RESPECT.
