INSIDE THE BOX: NO. 3 OHIO STATE ROARS BACK TO BEAT NO. 11 PENN STATE IN HAPPY VALLEY

For the second year in a row, a struggling Ohio State team came back to beat Penn State despite being down big in the fourth quarter.

The Ohio State Buckeyes, once again, have delivered one of the most thrilling games of the year. No. 3 Ohio State's 27-26 win over No. 11 Penn State was not the offensive shootout many thought it may be, but the matchup still provided us with a number of exhilarating moments.

In today's Inside the Box, we will talk about how Ohio State trusted its athletes, how some breakout players made a name for themselves on the national stage, the improved play of the linebackers, and a tale of resilience that could be a bedtime story for future Buckeyes.

OHIO STATE RELIED ON THE SHORT GAME
The Buckeyes’ gameplan was pretty clear throughout the game; throw the ball short and let their athletes go against Penn State on the perimeter.

The result? One of the weirdest statlines you will ever see. Dwayne Haskins’s 270-yard night on 56% passing will not hurt his Heisman chances and resulted in a huge Ohio State win, but his downfield throwing did not impress anyone watching.

To investigate Haskins’s night, we will be using a statistic called “air yards”. Air yards are defined as the distance from the line of scrimmage to the mark where the receiver catches the ball. Everything after the catch is known as yards after catch (YAC). It should be noted that these numbers are unofficial, but have been diligently recorded and obtained.

Haskins gained just 58 air yards on Saturday, his lowest mark of the season. To put this into perspective, Ohio State had 56 air yards in the first two passing plays against TCU.

Dwayne Haskins attempted just two passes over 20 air yards; they were both incomplete and intended for Austin Mack. Dwayne Haskins acted more as a distributor than the precise gunslinger we have seen in prior weeks. Throughout the game, Haskins trusted his coaching and made the right decisions.

The ball WAS in the hands of McSorley. He just happened to give it away.

Also, I watched that video of Franklin and the fan. It’s not a good look anytime a coach stops to acknowledge an asshat but I also think too much is being made of what actually went down, which was basically nothing.

Franklins failure wasn’t the play call. It was burning two timeouts.

On the one hand, I did just change my avatar at the beginning of the season. On the other hand, dammed if I don't want KJ high stepping in with Mack celebrating in the background...

First thing I thought when I saw this pic: Hello new wallpaper!
Just put that as my FB cover photo. Now to watch my two PSU friends unfriend me...

Football: Urban Meyer looks ahead to Indiana after Penn State win

IMG_0356-us21in-530x353.jpg

Urban Meyer said he does not want to look back at the Iowa game last season.

After another 1-point win against then-No. 9 Penn State on Saturday, Ohio State will return to Ohio Stadium in a much similar position to what it was after the win against the Nittany Lions.

The Buckeyes prepare for Indiana on Saturday ranked as high as they have been all season, reaching No. 3 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll.

With the parallels between last year’s Iowa game and this week’s Indiana game, Meyer said in his weekly press conference the team’s approach will need to be consistent, to stay level headed against every opponent it faces.

Meyer said this is not a conversation he has had with his team yet, but it will happen eventually.

“That’s real,” Meyer said. “Especially in places like Ohio State where it will be a really good team, and now prepare for another really good team. That will be the message.”

Even though Meyer would not acknowledge the Iowa game directly, he said Indiana will bring a dangerous team to Columbus on Saturday, but he does not look to the past in terms of preparing for a game very similarly placed to one of two losses last season.

However, when focusing on only his team, Meyer knows one thing.

He said Ohio State has not yet hit its ceiling. But it’s not something the head coach is worried about right now.

“We went on the road twice, against TCU, a top-10 team on the road and Penn State on the road. I don’t know any school in the country that did that this year. We walked away with wins,” Meyer said. “Also we lost one of the top football players in America on defense. We’re just coaching our tails off to make the guys better. Young players have to contribute. The ceiling here is — we don’t have time. We are just working on what we have to worry about.”
