Men's volleyball: Buckeyes win first national title

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Ohio State and Shawn Sangrey saved their best for when it counted the most as the Buckeyes won their first men's volleyball national championship last night with a five-set victory over UC Santa Barbara.
Sangrey, a junior from Columbia, Pa., had a career-high 30 kills, the last three coming in the waning moments of the fifth set in State College, Pa. Then, senior setter Steve Kehoe leaped to block UCSB All-American Jeff Menzel's last shot at keeping the Gauchos alive, and the third-seeded Buckeyes made off with the title.
"We just had to step it up," Sangrey said of the team attitude headed into the fifth set, which they won 15-9. "We talked before the game about giving it everything we've got. We knew this was the last game and we wanted to go out on top."
In the celebration that ensued, Kehoe became the bottom man on a pile of Buckeyes near center court while coach Pete Hanson punched the air.
Ohio State (26-6) made its 18th trip to the final four and its third appearance in the title game, but there was a long-held resolve on the team, led by seniors Kehoe, John Klanac and Kevin Heine, not to let that be enough.
"We knew this was our last go-around," Klanac said. "We knew what was at stake."
