Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

OVER! :groove:

I won't lie....I had that sinking feeling that this was going to end in agony for OSU (the same one I always had when Coop was coaching against UM ). ALWAYS happy to be wrong.

Great effort Buckeyes and sepecially the stacker Kobelt!!!
In tomorrow's finals, the word is that USC's #2 single's Ray Sarmiento is injured and may be out of action, which would potentially push everyone up in the lineup.:wink2:

The big question, will OSU performance today (absolutely stellar, best effort of the year so far), carry over in momentum vs. USC and their all world lineup less their #2?

The third-ranked Ohio State men?s tennis team remained unbeaten on the season (12-0) after downing No. 2 Virginia (7-1) 4-1 in the semifinals of the 2012 National Team Indoor Championship. The Buckeyes now will face No. 1 USC at noon Monday at the Boar?s Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. The match between Ohio State and USC will be a rematch from the 2009 NCAA Championship final that took place in College Station, Texas.

?There were a lot of tiebreakers played out there tonight. We were fortunate enough to win a couple of them. If you play this game long enough, you get lucky and win some matches like this,? Ty Tucker, head coach, said. ?We are an energetic team usually, no matter where we play. We knew this match would be three or four hours and we would have to compete hard for that long. We have had a lot of matches against USC. They are the best team in the country, but again, if you play this game long enough, you can come up with a few wins against teams like USC or Virginia.?

It will be the first time Ohio State has advanced to the ITA National Team Indoor Championship final since the 2007-08 season and the Buckeyes fell to the Cavaliers that year 4-1.

Blaz Rola rebounded after a tough outing Saturday with a big 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win at No. 2. The Ptuj, Slovenia, native?s win was the fourth point for the Buckeyes as they earned their first win over the Cavaliers in four tries. The last win vs. Virginia was in the second round of the 2003-04 NCAA tournament. . . .

Virginia has won the National Indoor Championship the previous five seasons, defeating Ohio State during the last two tournaments.

Ohio State continued its streak of winning the doubles point after three highly competitive doubles contests with the Cavaliers. Devin McCarthy and Ille Van Engelen gave the Buckeyes an early advantage after an 8-6 win on court two against Alex Domijan and Steven Rooda.

The Buckeyes? top-ranked duo of Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola fell 9-8 after losing a 7-2 tiebreaker to 12th-ranked Drew Courtney and Jarmere Jenkins.
However, Peter Kobelt and Connor Smith returned the favor with a 9-8 win of their own on court three after claiming a 7-5 tiebreaker win over Mitchell Frank and Julen Uriguen.

McCarthy gave Ohio State a 2-0 lead after defeating No. 37 Justin Shane 7-6, 6-0 on court five. Virginia cut the lead in half after Courtney picked up a tough 7-6, 7-5 over Van Engelen at No. 4.

In the upset of the tournament, Kobelt defeated Frank, the nation?s top-ranked singles player 7-5, 7-6 in a back and forth match. It was the first loss of the freshmen?s collegiate career. The win gave Ohio State a 3-1 lead vs. the No. 2 Cavaliers. . . .

The Buckeyes have been ranked in the ITA Top 10 for 174 consecutive matches (beginning March 7, 2006).
Ohio State has won 80 consecutive Big Ten Conference matches.

Gracelhink's notes:
* Prior to the outcome I honestly have to admit to projecting how USC could possibly defeat this Cavalier team in the final, UVA is that solid and we don't match up well with them, never have, until yesterday!
* Kobelt who some college tennis fans accuse is the player Tucker uses to stack the Buckeye lineup, came up huge, knocking off the #1 ranked player in the NCAA. It was Frank's first loss in his NCAA career!
* Wow, Buckeyes pulled the stunner of the tourney and will now face USC at noon today for the championship.
* Buckeyes don't match up well with USC either.:(
* OSU will absolutely need to win the double's point to have any hope of surviving single's.
* USC #1 Steve Johnson won the NCAA tournament last fall but took the fall off from NCaA competition to focus on the pro circuit. He is untouchable for Buchanan.
* Buckeyes will again need to rely on upsets to have a hope of gaining a W vs. Trojans. USC lineup is filled with talent and depth. After #1 Johnson, the Trojans have in order the #18, #14, #47, #36, and #86 ranked players. Tucker is thinking I need to find 3 points in the remaining 5 matches.
* At #2 singles, I think Ty Tucker will be counting on Blaz Rola to get one of those three points. Rola came through in the clutch yesterday and is showing signs of a return to his elite level of play.
* Was yesterday an anomaly for the stacker Peter Kobelt? What if Kobe really is capable of getting a win against the #14 ranked player in the nation? I doubt Tucker is counting on another upset special at #3.
* Van Engelen (ITA #99) at 4th singles would have to be considered a longshot vs. #47 ranked Gomez. Ty is thinking I need to find 2 more points but my best chances are at #5 and #6.
* At #5 singles, Devin McCarthy (ITA #65) has been playing the tournament of his life. Would love to see him get an upset over #36 Hanfmann.
* At #6 Smith (ITA #107) could give #86 ranked Quiroz a challenge. Tucker will really be hoping Smith can steal a point here.
* Gracelhink predicts: Buckeyes get the next upset shocker of the tournament with a 4-3 final!
Bucks will claim the double's point and get single's wins at #2, 5, and 6.

The ITA National Championship match starts at noon today vs. USC. Buckeye fans can monitor the action live online (i.e. summon the scores) via Livestats.

Go Bucks!
