Ohio State Men's Tennis (2014/2019/2024 ITA Indoor National Champs, 17 Straight B1G Titles)

I knew Alex waaayyy back and I do not think that there are many guys on the Ohio State team that would outwork him. They might be a little bit better than him but his never give up attitude and determination (grittiness) are worth a couple points in any match that he plays.

What do I know but I always felt Kobelt had a higher ceiling and a lower floor than Joyce, and right now he's riding hot so I'd roll with him also.

Joyce played #4 last night and handled a good opponent, as did Kobelt at #5.
Upside for Bucks is that they are both very good and offer quality at the bottom of singles and will excel in dubs.
Once either gets a break it seems lights out with both having aggressive and dominant serve games.
Buckeyes played well last night at the bottom of the lineup, Wolf looked frustrated esp in the 2nd set, uncharacteristically recd a code violation for racket abuse when pasha broke his serve at 40-40.
Turned things up in the third set super breaker with a 10-0 finish.
Tough night for Seelig as he lost at third line, 7-6, 0-6, and 10-8 in the super breaker.

When did they go to a "super breaker" thing?
NCAA has offered that option for several years,
Usually coaches agree in advance re. The ifs.
If the match is decided, either to play out or abandon current matches.
If there is a split of sets, either play a full third set or a super tie breaker to determine winner.

Also of note among other ranked teams yesterday,
Wake Forest is the current no. 1 ranked team in the ITA, but they were defeated by #13 Virginia, 5-2. Will be interesting if ITA voters make the Bucks jump to No. 1 in next weeks rankings.
It also helps the OSU resume that #10 Stanford who Bucks defeated last weekend, went to #5 USC and burst the Trojans hopes 4-3 on their home courts.
Even the Lady Bucks gave #3 ranked Duke a scare in the ITA women’s indoor tournament, they led 3-2 but lost at 5 singles and then dropping the dubs point and the match 4-3.

Play it out! Play it out!
I wasn’t at the match, and don’t know what was negotiated in advance about continue or abandon matches when deciding point was clinched. However, the writer of the OSU official recap dropped this nugget.

With the score 3-0, McNally, Kobelt and JJ Wolf all had match points on their respective courts. Kobelt was the one to finish it off as he beat Walker Duncan 6-4, 6-3 on court five. McNally was leading 40-30 vs. No. 7 Jan Zielinski on court two and Zielinski opted not to finish the match. Same held true on court one as Wolf was a point away with Emil Reinberg serving and he too decided not to finish the match.

Both McNally and Wolf would have received major points with w’s over highly ranked opponents and at the end of the season would be potential factors in receiving an invite or seed for the NCAA singles tournament.

Ohio State will next host No. 5 Southern Cal on Tuesday evening at the Varsity Tennis Center. First serve is 6 p.m.
