MTEN: No. 3 Seed Buckeyes Advance to 2009 National Championship Final after 4-3 Win in a Showdown vs. UCLA - The Ohio State Buckeyes Official Athletics Site - OhioStateBuckeyes.com

Down 3-1, the No. 3-seed Ohio State men?s tennis team won three-consecutive singles matches to down No. 7-seed UCLA, 4-3, in the national semifinals Monday at the 2009 NCAA Championships in College Station Texas, at Texas A&M's George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
The semifinal match-point belonged to junior Justin Kronauge at No. 3 singles. The 25th-ranked Kronauge, a 2008 ITA All-American, battled from behind after dropping the first set to clinch the victory for the Buckeyes with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 win against Harel Srugo. Kronauge improves to 40-7 overall this season, which is tied for sixth all-time in the single-season wins list.

?It came down to me today and I just wanted to win for the seniors more than anything,? Kronauge said. ?The team and coaching staff have worked so hard the last three years and we didn?t want the season to end today. It was an unbelievable feeling to win for Ohio State.

?It?s a great day and I couldn?t be more proud of the guys,? Tucker said. ?We lost the doubles point, but we were able to battle back with some big wins. We need to rest up and come back out tomorrow ready to go. We got to be ready to roll.?

Ohio State now prepares for its first national championship final against a hot USC squad at 3 p.m. ET Tuesday. The Trojans (24-5), ranked eighth in the nation, defeated No. 12-seed Texas, 4-1, in the semifinals. USC downed top-ranked and undefeated Virginia (32-1), 4-0, in the quarterfinals of the championship. The match will be televised live on ESPNU.

Interesting comments from Coach Tucker:

Results :: 2009 NCAA Tennis Championships

Ohio State Head Coach Ty Tucker
?We escaped with a win. After years of losing in the quarterfinals, we caught a big break today. (Harel) Srugo got a little timid at the end, in which (Justin) Kronauge was cramping, and left balls in the middle of the court and Kronauge was able to tag them. He made about 85 percent of them. It is obviously a great day for us. I feel for (UCLA) Coach Martin, because he does an excellent job. He has a talented team ? probably the best talent we?ve faced all year. It was a grind for us. Anybody who watched the match from start to finish knew that we faced some tough things with two-all in the second-set tiebreaker with (Matt) Allare tearing up his ankle. Kronauge had triple-set points in the first set, wasn?t able to capitalize, lost that set and came back. What a day for Steven Moneke. He beat one of the best players in the Pac-10 and was able to go through him pretty quick and get a set doubles point back. When we were down 3-2 and 3-1, (Bryan) Koniecko, Kronauge and Chase Buchanan all kept fighting and kept their heads up.?

Quotes also from UCLA Head Coach Billy Martin
?It was another unbelievable great match and as lucky as we were to win yesterday, just the reverse coin. That?s how these matches are here. There is very little difference between winning and losing. I just felt that if we could have won that one game when we were up 4-3, 15 to 40, we were looking good. If we pulled off that last game, we have the advantage, because he (Justin Kronauge) looks like he is starting to cramp really badly. You have a chance to play another two to three games. You never know how he is going to hold up. You have to take your hat off to him. He kept his cool, took his time, used his forehand and did a great job with it. What a great last point. You could just see both of those kids just fighting their heart out.?

These matches are extremely competitive right now and I don't think any of them can be called. Our 3 big guns need to win and Allare, Novak, or Buchanan need to pull one out for us. The Buchanan match is way too close to call and playing a lefty is that the easiest thing to do.

This Litl bit of prophecy was big truth!

This victory over UCLA yesterday was huge not just for tOSU but also college tennis, really eliminated some of the possible arrogance that would have been spewing on forums today of the dominance of tennis in California.
I'll give those questions a shot, but this is really just my personal speculation.

Whats the skinny on USC? Are they good at doubles?

USC is very strong at doubles. They have won their doubles point in each of the rounds of the NCAA's and their quarters win at doubles over #1 Virginia just set the momentum for a 4-0 win against the team everyone thought was unbeatable. Have to believe that Ty is thinking that if tOSU can steal the doubles point it will be huge. Without Allare at #1, it will be some long odds of an tOSU double's win.
I would like Ty to match up Moneke and Kronauge at #1 doubles. Shuhei and Bryan at #2, and Buchanan and Novak at 3.

Are our singles matchups good?

I think we match up well at #2 and #3, (If Kronauge can recover from fatigue and cramps from yesterday). After that it looks like USC will have the advantage.
Can't ever count out Konecko at #1 though he is playing Farah # 8 ranked in the nation and just a strong player.
At #4 if Allare can recover, he will have his hands full, but I think this is an area that tOSU could steal a win. If he can't go we will lose some advantage.
At #5 and #6 tOSU will need a gargantuan performance from Novak, Buchanan and possibly Shuhei. One or possibly 2 points from 4,5,6 could make the difference from a 4-3 loss and a 4-3 victory.
Go Bucks!:oh:

Brutus asks 2 intriguing questions, here are some of my thoughts.

Talent wise how far behind Buchanan is Shuhei?

Not far, he is still ranked in the top 100 of ITA even though he has only 3 singles matches since Chase displaced him in the lineup.

How did USC fare against UCLA this year?

Surprisingly UCLA barely topped USC in matches earlier this year; at USC 4-3, at UCLA 5-2.
In both matches UCLA won the doubles point and had a 5-1 record at 4, 5, and 6 singles.
Since their tournament run began, USC has picked up its game. They are the hot team coming into the finals.

I know that bigballin has some insight on the tennis scene (I think that he used to compete against some pros like Roddick and others). I would like to hear his insight on this championship matchup as well.

Hope this gets streamed on the Internet like yesterday and that way we can pick the matches that are close. I think on ESPNU that they will only televise one match and stick with it.

Regarding our chances, I still think that our big three needs to come through and I have a lot of faith in Buchanan because he has played in a lot of big matches during his short career on the juniors circuit. I know this is different because he is going up against bigger guys but experience counts for something. The way the team gutted it out yesterday gives me even more incentive to pull for them today against the West Coast cheaters. At least they won't have to put up with that damn white horse... will they.:io:

Looks like the livestream is shut down in favor of ESPNU, should be able to monitor the scores online though.
Allare is playing dubs at #1!
