I would think Ohio State would have a very good men's tennis tean next year too.

Buckeyes will have two blue chip seniors who have signed LOI's as Freshman next year.
Diaz is ranked #25 in the nation.
Hunter Callahan from near Pittsburg, is regarded as an even better player, and ranked #15. He is not listed in the tennis recruiting site as a 2011 grad, because they think he enrolled early. http://www.tennisrecruiting.net/player.asp?id=267243

Recap of the tough loss from yesterday's semifinal from the OSU Tennis site

The fourth-ranked Ohio State men's tennis (34-3) fell to top-ranked Virginia (34-0), 4-2, Monday at the 2011 NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif., to finish the 2011 season. The 34 team wins are the fourth most in program history.
After falling in its second NCAA semifinals trip in program history, Ohio State and head coach Ty Tucker now stands at 29-12 in the NCAA tournament.
In doubles, Buckeye duo Chase Buchanan and Shuhei Uzawa survived a couple of rallies by Jarmere Jenkins and Julen Uriguen on court two to put the Buckeyes up 1-0. Jenkins and Uriguen broke-serve to lead 6-5, but Buchanan and Uzawa returned the favor to pull out the victory.
Buchanan and Uzawa finished 15-2 overall in doubles on the year after winning their seventh-consecutive match.
Blaz Rola and senior co-captain Balazs Novak would mount a comeback of their own to claim the doubles point for Scarlet and Gray and their 12th-consecutive victory. The tandem trailed 5-2 to Alex Domijan and Sanam Singh before breaking two of the Virginia pair's serves to tie it at 6-6. The duo continued its momentum to defeat the Cavalier team 8-6 and improve to 17-1 overall, all on court three.
Matt Allare and Peter Kobelt held tough on one with the No. 2 ranked doubles team in the nation, Michael Shabaz and Drew Courtney, leading most of the match before having it abandoned at 8-8.
Overall, the Buckeyes finished the season at 82-20 in doubles competition.
The Cavaliers took a 2-1 lead by winning at the No. 1 and 2 singles positions. Domijan defeated Buchanan 6-2, 6-2 on court two and Shabaz downed Rola 6-4, 6-4 on one.
Devin McCarthy tied the match at 2-2 with a strong come-from-behind performance, winning 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 5. McCarthy improved to 30-5 on the season, including marks of 25-3 in the spring and 11-2 on court five.
Allare rallied after being down 5-2 in the second set vs. Jenkins but eventually fell 3-6, 7-6, 2-6 on court four. Allare finished his Ohio State career 216 career wins.
Singh would wrap up the win for Virginia with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win against Van Engelen.
The 2011 senior class concludes its career with some of the best numbers in Ohio State history. For four-year players, Allare, Novak and Uzawa own the program's most wins all-time (140), most NCAA wins all-time (14), claimed a 55-0 all-time Big Ten record and never lost at home with an 73-0 ledger. The class leaves Ohio State with four Big Ten regular-season and four Big Ten tournament titles. In NCAA play, the class went to the program's only final (2009) along with four quarterfinal appearances (2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011).
The singles and doubles championships of the 2011 NCAA Tournament will begin following the conclusion of the team championship (May 19-24). The University of Stanford will serve as host. Rola, the fifth-seed, Buchanan, and Allare will participate in the singles draw, while Allare and Peter Kobelt will compete on the doubles side. Live updates will be available at www.gostanford.com and www.ncaa.com.
Tennis Match Results

May 23, 2011

Doubles (Order of Finish: 2, 3)
1) No. 2 Courtney/Shabaz (UVA) vs. No. 21 Allare/Kobelt (OSU) aban.
2) Buchanan/Uzawa (OSU) d. Jenkins/Uriguen (UVA) 8-6
3) Rola/Novak (OSU) d. Domijan/Singh (UVA) 8-6

Singles (Order of Finish: 2, 1, 5, 4, 3)
1) No. 5 Michael Shabaz (UVA) d. No. 4 Blaz Rola (OSU) 6-4, 6-4
2) No. 2 Alex Domijan (UVA) d. No. 10 Chase Buchanan (OSU) 6-2, 6-2
3) No. 34 Sanam Singh (UVA) d. No. 107 Ille Van Engelen (OSU) 4-6, 6-3, 6-1

5) No. 65 Devin McCarthy (OSU) d. Justin Shane (UVA) 6-2, 4-6, 6-3
6) Julen Uriguen (UVA) vs. No. 111 Balazs Novak (OSU) aban.

Was not able to monitor the match yesterday, but thanks to those who posted the updates.
The double's point was a pleasant surprise, got the momentum rolling early.
McCarthy came through big in the clutch and if the match was extended Novak would probably claim the victory at #6.
Clearly the Tucker formula was in place for an upset.
Needed #1 or #4, Allare seemed to have a comeback in his plans when down 2-5 in the 2nd set and prevailing in a breaker.
But the top 4 of UVa is what carries that team.
Jenkins is a crazy good athlete, quick, strong and can control matches.
Rola was the one I hoped could get a W, but Shabazz is a veteran and showed why he is #4 ranked in the nation.
Domijan showed why he was ranked as the #2 player in the nation.
Must have been very frustrating for Cbuch.
The individual portions of the championships start Wed. and there are some Buckeyes we will be cheering for success.
It appears that CBuchanan and BRola who earned a double's invitation, have chosen not to play in the double's portion, probably to conserve energy and focus on singles.

A few quotes from Coach Tucker in the article below.

Fourth-seeded Ohio State won the doubles point, but top-ranked Virginia won four of five singles matches to defeat the Buckeyes 4-2 in an NCAA men's tennis semifinal yesterday in Stanford, Calif.

The Buckeyes (34-3) had lost the doubles point to Virginia (34-0) in a February match that the Cavaliers won 4-1. Yesterday, Chase Buchanan and Shuhei Uzawa won 8-6 at No.2 doubles and Blaz Rola and Balazs Novak also won 8-6 at third doubles to give Ohio State a 1-0 lead.

Virginia's top two players - Michael Shabaz and Alex Domijan - then won convincingly over Rola and Buchanan to put the Cavaliers up 2-1.

"It was a battle of four guys in the top 10 of the rankings, and Virginia was able to take our two spots and put two points on the board in an hour and 15 minutes," Ohio State coach Ty Tucker said. "Everywhere else it seemed to be a war. Our first-serve percentage wasn't high, and that was the difference in the match."

OSU's Devin McCarthy tied the match with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Justin Shane.

Jarmere Jenkins of Virginia beat Matt Allare 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, and then Sanam Singh clinched the victory for the Cavaliers with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Ille Van Engelen.

"If you beat us at 1, 2 and 4 (singles), we really can't come back," Tucker said. "Those are three spots where we've won 115 matches and probably lost 10 all season. They beat us at 1, 2 and 4, and pretty convincingly. I thought it was due to the fact that at 1 and 2 singles they were able to get 30 to 40 free points on their first serves and they did a great job of returning our first serves."

I think Mr. Tennis will agree with me with the statement that guy is coming right out of high school such as Callahan and Diaz will probably not see that much action next year.

In addition, there is some uncertainty about Rola returning to Ohio State next season. Remember Marcan from last year. He was a European player who came over and played for one year and then went back to Europe. That is why I made the statement about all of the guys sticking around for next season.

Litl, I sure hope Rola comes back! It would stabilize the lineup in so many ways. The articles and interviews I have read seem to suggest that Rola enjoys his time as a Buckeye and absolutely respects the coaching staff.
I do agree with you re. Freshmen recruits, and I think Tucker will prepare both Diaz and Callahan for the possibility of a redshirt year like Metka, Kobelt, and McCarthy as freshmen. It is a tough transistion and assignment for juniors to make the jump to NCAA.
On the other hand two observations:
The first thing that should not be counted out is that these two blue chippers have some incredible potential, I especially like Callahan's game.
He is playing some circuit tournaments and competing at an extremely high level. Diaz also.
The 2nd is that this year's class of HS seniors is extremely deep! this is one of the best American classes in a long time. They are competitive on the international junior scene which is a fresh and encouraging change from some other classes. I am expecting many of the Blue chip recruits this year will be seeing action next year on major college campuses.

ESPNU is televising the final this afternnon between USC and UVA.
USC is off to a strong start, won the double's point. It will be interesting to see how the singles matchups shake out today.
Have to think that USC will win #1, 5, and 6.
UVA will win #2, 3, and 4.

USC won #5 and is up 2-0. #1 through #4 for UVa lost their set, it could get interesting for UVa.

USC just won #1, they are up 3-1.

UVa won #2 and is leading #6.
