Ohio State Men's Lacrosse (2013 ECAC Champions)

Unreal win. Just pure guts. To come storming back and then hold off a late Maryland push. This team is a true contender an a year with no clear elite team. We sit comfortably now in first place and are essentially a lock to not only make both tournaments, but be a seed in the NCAA (and the B1G tournament is in Cbus this year... how fortunate)... I'm officially excited.

When the B1G season started I said we needed to win our home games (JHU/UMD) and beat Michigan... we've done that. A win next week at RU would be a cherry on top of one of the best regular seasons of Ohio State Lax I've ever witnessed.

Holding serve has been huge. Knocking off a #1 and a #2 in the same year? Yup, one of the best regular seasons I've ever seen as well.

I think that they have a way to go, but there are so many pieces in place for a good run. If there's one thing that stands out to me, over the last few games anyhow, is that scoring is coming from a lot of different sticks. Today Fannell came up with a career game. Other games Leclaire had a hot hand, last week it was Jasinski, Pearson was huge against Denver... all the while we've had reliable scoring across the first two lines. Mind you, those guys all score very differently which bodes well in tourney play. Try to lock down the step down shooters and the two man game will pick you apart. Try to cut off the attack line and they start sniping from outside.

Poles and defensive middies have played as well as any D I've seen in Columbus. Randall is damn good, probably the best pole on the team, but as a unit they are playing very very well. Tommy is doing his job well in cage. Very well.

Withers is huge. /story

They still have to clean up some of the turnovers. I though that was going to sink us early. A few lazy passes that got picked and just not taking care of the ball from here on out will be the death of the season. Take care of the ball and they'll have a long run.

At this point I think they'd have to piss down their legs to not make the NCAAs. What will be interesting is how many from the B1G make it. UMD, tOSU I think are in for sure. I think Hop has a case. UNC dropping to the Domers today may make some room for RU... but I really think they have to win B1G tourney to get in. I think they are still on the outside looking in if we beat them next weekend.

All in, this has been one of the most enjoyable college LAX seasons I can remember.

PSU, UMD, tOSU are in at this point... JHU/RU are on the fence. Both ned either a win this coming weekend (against UMD/tOSU respectively) or a run through the B1G tournament. Hop played a brutal schedule but dropped a ton of games while RU doesn't have the dearth of quality wins after laying an egg so far in conference. I think we definitely get 4, and if we were to get 5, it would be with RU making a run through the tournament.

Lost in OT. Withers didn't take a draw after the third quarter. Not sure what happened but he wasn't as effective as he normally is. Hope it's not an injury as he'll be needed here on out.

That said, fuck Rutgers and the broadcast booth. Watching this game and listening to the booth was like the worst combination of Mark May, Beth Mowins a bottle of Hai Karate mixed with aquavelva all wrapped up and presented with a thick Jersey accent...

Wanted this one for momentum. Hopefully it's a wake up.

This is a different team on the road. Still very good and competitive, but not the same. We nudge into the "Elite" category at home, but failed to really produce a top tier win on the road (Towson being the only good one, but the Tigers are not in the top echelon this year imo).

Thankfully the B1G tournament is in Columbus.

Yeah, for sure. Two totally different teams.

Two stats that jump out from Rut were turnovers and FO wins. I've still not seen anything about Withers not taking the draws from the third on. Worst case with Withers, provided he's not injured, was 50/50. I don't think that we won 25% of the draws after he went out... and when he didn't go on for the OT I could have called it before the officials had them set...

So that win probably locks us up at top 8 seed... Do we get a top 4 seed with a win tomorrow? I think so. Sweep the season against MD plus our other wins and zero bad losses?

Elsewhere in lax world, did anyone see the ending of the Hofstra/UMass game? Bud stealer out of the CAA due to a midfield buzzer beater. May have been in nail in the Rutgers coffin...
