Ohio State Men's Lacrosse (2013 ECAC Champions)

A Triton First

Triton lacrosse head coach Glen Miles (left) and Bennett Jonas.

San Clemente High?s Bennett Jonas is on his way to a big first for the Tritons. A junior this year, he?s a productive member of the varsity football team, and an elite area player when lacrosse season hits come spring. And his talents in lacrosse are taking him where no other local kid has ever gone before?playing the sport on full-ride scholarship for a Division 1 school.

On October 29, Jonas gave a verbal commitment to play lacrosse at Ohio State University under head coach Nick Myers. The Buckeyes were one of several top collegiate programs?including Denver, Syracuse, Stony Brook, Bucknell, Notre Dame, Cornell and Virginia?that had been courting Jonas for the last year.

?It really came down to Ohio State and Syracuse for me,? Jonas said. ?I committed early because most lacrosse programs fill their rosters by the end of a player?s junior year, and Ohio State is where I want to be at that next level.

?I?m 100 percent with my commitment to the Buckeyes,? he said. ?I don?t think anyone else will sway me from Ohio State.?

Jonas, a midfielder, says he?s not being recruited to play any other sports, save for the occasional letter that taps his interest in playing football in college.

?I have no real interest in playing football at the next level,? he said. ?I have every intention of signing my letter of intent to play lacrosse for Ohio State when I?m allowed to do so at the end of my junior year.?

Well folks, it wasn't pretty. Beautiful day in Invesco field, mid 60's and mostly sunny, nice crowd, and lots of Buckeye fans came to represent. DU prevailed 11-6 and the game was never in much doubt. DU jumped to a 2-0 lead and the Buckeyes scraped together a couple of goals to tie at 2. From that point on it was all DU. They dominated the time of possession, controlled the pace, won most of the face offs (by a wide margin), and seemed to come up with most of the loose balls. They seemed to have the fresher legs and looked to be the quicker of the two teams. Oh well, watching my Buckeyes in person in any sport makes for a great day. Thus endeth my first lacrosse game review. :osu4:

Thanks for the recap, Denver is playing great lacrosse right now. They can score on anyone. Here is my preview for tomorrow's Showdown in the 'Shoe against Fairfield (11 p.m.).

a very disappointing end to a transitional season

when Coach Breschi left, he left OSU in very good shape. Most importantly, OSU was suddenly a desired job for some rather good coaching prospects out there. Gene Smith hired Myers despite having several high caliber names vying for the job.

Myers has nearly all the stars returning next year. It will be an important one for him.

Tough game today for the bucks. OSU played from behind for nearly the whole game, and ultimately fell short 9-11 against Fairfield. Every time OSU picked up some momentum, FU (lol) would capitalize with a goal off of a turnover. Give fairfield credit for keeping their mistakes to a minimum and taking advantage of the chances they got. In the end, OSU just couldn't overcome some costly mistakes.

Defensively, OSU did an above average job on their slides. But they got caught ball watching several times that resulted in several easy chances for Fairfield.

I'm impressed with the schemes OSU ran offensively. Their plays really opened up some good looks. At the beginning of the game, OSU would run a long play, with several crisp passes. Then, the pass that would set up a great look would be just a tad slow. This (combined with some great saves by the Fairfield goalie) led to OSU's early offensive struggles. Ball movement improved as the game went on, and OSU's offense really started to click. Those guys are so young (top 4 scorers are 3 Sophomores and a Freshman) and really could be something special in the coming years.
