IN TODAY’S DAY AND AGE... In an interview with Eleven Warriors editor Dan Hope, Cardale Jones expressed confidence in Luke Fahey or Tavien St. Clair as Ohio State’s next quarterback. He also discussed what his NIL value would have been 11 years ago after he led the Buckeyes to a national title.
“I don’t want to think about it,” Jones said with a laugh.
Reflecting on his circumstances after Ohio State’s magical three-game run to the national championship, Jones said he could have maximized his NIL value either remaining at Ohio State or transferring elsewhere. It’s a great point. In the modern era, the Buckeyes couldn’t have kept both Jones and J.T. Barrett on the roster. Really, it would have been hard to keep all of Ohio State’s stars in Columbus.
“I’d have been in a very favorable situation to maximize my NIL value,” Jones said. “But on the flip side, I would have recognized we had other potentially high-dollar athletes like Ezekiel Elliott, Michael Thomas, a young Curtis Samuel, Joey Bosa, Von Bell; the list goes on.”
Today, the most expensive college football rosters cost around $50 million, with schools like Ohio State, Oregon, Texas, LSU, Texas A&M, Miami and Notre Dame in that ballpark, according to The Athletic. Jones believes the 2015 Buckeyes would have cost between $70 million and $80 million in the current market.
“People talking about a $30 million, $40 million, $50 million roster that so many schools are having. I mean, ours would have been that easily 10, 12 years ago,” Jones said. “That would probably be worth $70 million, $80 million, you know? $70 million in today’s day and age.”
It’s hard to argue with that.
Jones mentioned a few of the stars above, and there were several more. I mean, look at how many NFL draft picks that 2015 team had!
