Postseason Bans for Three OSU Sports

According to the summary disposition report submitted to the NCAA, former head fencing coach Vladimir Nazlymov arranged, provided or directed members of the fencing coaching staff to provide impermissible recruiting inducements to multiple prospective athletes. The fencing program also committed several other violations including an assistant coach operating an impermissible fencing club used by prospective athletes, providing athletes to access to a local sports club without paying fees and exceeding the maximum number of countable coaches on staff. Nazlymov's employment designation with the university has been changed to “retirement in lieu of termination,” while associated head fencing coach Aleksandr Smerdin was also fired. Nazlymov has also received a five-year show-cause penalty.

SOLO NATTY, ANOTHER TOP-SIX FINISH

Ohio State made some noise at the NCAA Fencing Championships this weekend as freshman Gabriel Feinberg claimed an individual national title while the Buckeyes earned a No. 5 finish as a team.

Feinberg won the men’s epee national championship, downing both the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the process. His title marks the fifth men’s epee NCAA crown in program history and the third straight when Ohio State has competed at the national site.

As a team, the Buckeyes finished No. 5, continuing an impressive streak of dominance as Ohio State has finished in the top six every year it's competed since 2002.

Took fencing in college as a phys ed requirement. Was at Miami U, (no cars allowed), and women's gym across the street from my dorm (twas in winter). Wow, saw some demos from some great swordspeople. Had fast enough hands, but feet of lead. Anyway, there's much more to this sport than one thinks. Do wonder though, how one gets into fencing early enough to be 'good' in time for college. PS, seems like tOSU is always near the top in fencing, shooting, synchro etc. Wish we could make them counters for Director's Cup.

Nine Buckeyes Selected for NCAA Championships

Nine members of the Ohio State fencing program have been selected for the 2025 NCAA Championships, the NCAA announced Tuesday. The championships will be held March 20-23 in University Park, Pa.

The Buckeye Selections
Three Buckeyes will head to the national championships in each weapon. In epee, Gabriel Feinberg and Miles Weiss will compete for the men and Gloria Klughardt will be in the women's event. In foil, Ilya Ayupov and Solin Li earned a spot for the men's championship and Alina Lee was selected for the women's field. In sabre, Avin Rai and Nolan Williams will represent the Buckeyes in the men's event and Natalia Botello will be in the women's championship.

Lee will be making her fourth trip to the NCAA Championships and earned Honorable Mention All-America accolades in 2022. Feinberg is making his first appearance since winning the NCAA title and garnering First Team All-America honors as a freshman in 2022. Williams also competed in 2022 and Weiss was in the 2024 championships. Ayupov, Li and Rai will all be making their first appearances, along with first-year Buckeyes Klughardt and Botello.

Ohio State won combined NCAA team titles in 2004, 2008 and 2012 and the men's national crown in 1942, along with 18 individual titles.

NCAA Championships Format
  • The 2025 NCAA Fencing Championships will be held March 20-23 in University Park, Pa., hosted by Penn State. The men will compete the first two days, with the women the final two days.
  • Qualification to the NCAA Championships is based on regular season results and NCAA regional finish. No more than two fencers per gender per weapon from a school may be selected. Each region is allocated a certain number of spots for the NCAA Championships, with 144 total competitors selected.
  • At the championships, fencers will compete in a round-robin format of five-touch bouts. After round-robin, the Top 4 finishers in each weapon will fence in semifinal 15-touch bouts, with winners fencing to determine first and second places and non-advancing fencers awarded a tie for third place. An institution's place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes during round-robin competition.

Saw this post highlighted, and jumped on. It opened on post #20, which revolved around two coaches being fired for 'unpermissible' thus and such. Now that unpermissible stuff is encouraged, and happens daily. How the world has changed, even in the world of sword slinging. Am assuming that the NCAA allows all the NIL stuff whether or not that sport receives NIL.

Fencing

The 1870 Society is proud to sponsor Ohio State University Athletics and support the Fencing program in the first for-profit Name, Image, Likeness (NIL) collective supporting Ohio State athletes. The organization was founded by a group of passionate, and experienced operators who are committed to helping Ohio State student-athletes navigate this complex and evolving world of NIL.

The Ohio State Fencing program is one of the nation's oldest, celebrating 100 years in 2023. In that time, the Buckeyes have won four NCAA championships, and produced dozens of Olympians.

From 2000–2024, Ohio State Fencing is a top six program nationally with 20 conference championships, 161 All-Americans, and 15 Olympians.
