Ohio State-Cincinnati Series Question

On another board that I frequently post on, some overzealous Bearcat fans have themselves convinced that Ohio State ducked Cincinnati for 45 years and only agreed to play them this year because it was our "best team in decades." What is everyone's take on that garbage?

Also, to make this thread more general, should the Buckeyes and Bearcats renew their rivalry and play every year?

Thanks.

Thanks.

I wouldn't mind playing Cincy, but when they don't win several games in a row, I don't think their whining would be worth it....

Till this last season, the last two games against UC - 45 years ago - were in the NCAA tournament, which might have been one of the few times in recorded history that UC made it into something more than a regional round. That would make it what, one of the last times UC really had a team that played up to their full potential? Besides it is not as if either team was making a habit of scheduling each other.

Oh, how about every 45 years or so we meet up in a pre- or post-season tourney, just to keep things special. :wink2:
Seriously, if they make it into the NCAA it would be fine to dispatch UC. Scheduling them as a regular pre-conference gig wouldn't scare anybody either.

In all honesty, that is the part of the 45-year itch and scratch argument that makes me chuckle. If they think the 2006 game happened solely because the Buckeyes had their best team in decades, they ask you to ignore the obvious - UC is down now, they will remain so for a while (Gates notwithstanding). It is really they who wish to duck Ohio State. The 45-year straw man argument is an attempt to deflect their present feeling of inadequacy.

You are welcome.

Just for completeness and balance against the above satirical poke at the Bearcats their overall record is nothing to be unhappy with ...

still, their true heyday was back all those 45 years ago - with the back-to-back championships.

Yes, that board is Yappi. It seems every discussion on there turns into why Ohio State hasn't played Cincinnati in 45 years, and how the two teams mysteriously ended up on the court together this past season. Like it's a conspiracy or something. They usually throw around some silly quotes by Geiger as if those mean anything.

Really all I'm looking for is some ammo to shut them up once and for all. Thanks guys.

Hey these emoticons are pretty cool...

This is a silly argument. With how Matta's recruiting, why would we schedule them now, with a truckload of untested frosh & 1 returning starter?

If we're really so terrified of losing to big bad UC, why not wait a year or two when Matta has top-100 kids & 5-stars, with experience, filling his lineup & bench?

Is this what Cincy fans are accusing us of?

I can recall Lance McAllister, a sports radio guy in Cincinnati, saying that OSU wouldn't schedule UC for the longest time. McAllister is a guy who really puts in the time to do his homework and had never come across to me as a guy who says things to rile anyone up. I am really indifferent, but I think that the UC fans' complaining is founded in truth at some level.

McAllister knows which side of his bread the butter is on. He is (as you note) talking to a Cincinnati audience, don't believe for a minute that he is above pandering to the bias of his core constituency, which largely consists of UC and Xavier fans.
