EVERYTHING REMINDS ME OF YOU

Michigan shit the bed Saturday night and waaaaay too many Ohio State fans failed to enjoy it.

Shame on them. They squandered a delightful November meltdown by their least-favorite team fretting over division tiebreaker scenarios that don't yet exist and may not matter. Speaking of which - Michigan's loss is meaningless, which means you had to try not to enjoy that moment.

It's an unfortunate symptom from the neurotic nerdification of college football's postseason slotting. This sport is at its best when fans keep it dumb and primal, based strictly on love and hate - instead of worrying about rule books and committee whims. Jim Harbaugh took the most senior-laden team he'll ever have into a den of mediocrity and got sent home with a big fat L.

It was a beautiful sight. The Wolverines wallpapered the Iowa visitors' locker room to resemble the comforts of home (assumedly to soothe the psychological trauma of leaving Michigan for only the second time all season) and they still looked jittery. Blue was stumbling and panicking and shriveling and yet there were Buckeye fans thinking oh no, Penn State has to lose a game now.

Let's make something clear. The only team that needs to lose a game now is Michigan State.

Does that team sound familiar? You may remember this program. It's the one that ended Urban Meyer's two-season winning streak. The speed bump from 2015 that deflated Ohio State's tires. The team that didn't hold a lead against the Buckeyes in last year's game for a single minute of it - on Senior Day - and yet still won at the expense of Ohio State's sucking, stumbling, panicking and shriveling game plan in bad weather.

Looks Like the Same Ol' Spartans to Urban Meyer

Don't tell Urban Meyer that Michigan State has three wins and seven losses this season. He's not interested in your simplistic and irrelevant data points.

Don't tell him that the Spartans lost seven games in a row. He'll just point out that they are currently in the middle of a one-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 49-0 thanks to a 49-0 win over Rutgers.

Losses at Indiana, at Maryland, and at Illinois? Pointless like parsley. It doesn't matter.

Multi-touchdown losses at home to Wisconsin, BYU, and Northwestern? As meaningless as a referee's apology.

Michigan State is still Michigan State to Urban Meyer, and for good reason. In 2013 and 2015, it was the Spartans who spoiled opportunities for the Buckeyes to play for a national title.

That kind of thing doesn't just get forgotten. So, no, don't expect Meyer or the Buckeyes to overlook Michigan State because of their record or their play or anything, really. Not while the pain of other games against Michigan State still burn.

Despite those memories, Meyer doesn't need to look to the past to keep his team focused because he believes this current edition of the Spartans contains plenty of obstacles of their own.

"I think they've had some injuries," he said. "You know, I don't -- I still -- it looks like the same Michigan State defense to me, and that's what we're preparing for, and they're very good players."

Who'da thunk Sparty was Urb's Achilles heel? So far, 'tis true. Once again, Sparty will play above their heads, to 'make' their season (since failing to live up to lofty pre-season, and keep their Meatchicken streak alive. They did beat a bad Notre Dame team though (before the Domers were exposed as over-hyped). So I foretell that the coaches are having tOSU kids focus on righting the last year's wrongs, and it doesn't matter what happens next week, if they stumble to MSU. Well, I don't really believe that either, but it would kill the championship hopes. tOSU 48-13. Go Bucks.
