Compare Clarett's O-line to Beanie's O-line

Yep and..

#1 Craig Krenzel won the title but Troy Smith is still obviously the more talented quarterback

#2 Clarett may have been a more crucial part of the offense that year, but Beanie's sophomore year when they made it to the title game, Wells had more Yards, and YPC. Clarett recorded 3 more TDs.

In the respective national title games, Beanie had 20 carries for 145 yards (7.3 YPC) and TD to Clarett's 23 carries for 47 yards and 2 TDs (2 YPC). Obviously Clarett had the turnover that you can't really measure though I guess

The Beanie Wells/Maurice Clarett debate is a tough one. On the one hand, I think that for the games that Clarett did play, he was a more electrifying presence than Wells was. His presence changed the complexion of the game, and it created a buzz in the stadium that I've never quite experienced at any other time in the 'Shoe. Beanie was great in his own right - but when Clarett was in it changed the entire atmosphere.

On the other hand, there are the character issues and longevity, which I don't think can be discounted. People give him credit for playing a season at Ohio State, but really he only played about half of that. Clarett simply cannot match the breadth of Wells' accomplishments.

I think there are two ways to look at it when making a list like this. You can look at it as a form of recognition, and highlight players for the depth and breadth of their accomplishments, or you can look at it as a dream team, and highlight the player you would most want to have at that position if you were selecting a team to play an actual game. I'm inclined toward the former, and I think Wells deserves the first team spot on that basis. If I were coach and had both of them in a game and had to choose one of them to tote the rock, I'd probably pick Clarett.

I don't really think there's much of an argument between Beanie and MoC... I'll take Beanie hands down every game if I had to pick between the two of them. Both had amazing vision, power, and game breaking capabilities, Clarett had better cutting ability, but Beanie was much tougher than Clarett and could play through the injuries.

Not to mention the mental aspect of everything, Beanie far and away had the better head on his shoulders. Because whether you measure their mental states as to what they did off the field or to what they did on the field, when Clarett lost his cool, he LOST it. Case in point, the '02 Northwestern game where Clarett coughed up the ball three times and you could tell by the way he handled himself on the sidelines that it not only bothered him but it affected the way he played the rest of the game. Beanie never showed a sign of frustration when in game, sure he was probably upset when he put the ball on the ground, but overall he could deal with the setback and move forward. Much more composed individual than Clarett on and off the field.

And neither one can hold a candle to Art Schliechter as a modern QB. or is that the the OO's from 2000 to 2009?

Gamble made some serious clutch plays, but I'm an old enough fart to have watched the days where quarterbacks would go full games in back-to-back weeks before they would throw at Nate Clements. Gamble had a similar response, but not as much I thought. Also, Clements is far superior in run support to Gamble...though Gamble showed great improvement in his jr. season.

Put Animal at SLB & Wilhelm at MLB and you've got a great lineup.

I think Kaiser Wilhelm is probably the most under appreciated in a group of outstanding LBs

Also wonder what we would have thought of Boeckman if he'd had the same corps of receivers as Smith. Not to put the knock on Robo and Hartline, but that was some line up -- Ginn, Holmes, Gonzo... The best receiver Todd had was probably the man who replaced him at QB.

No mistaking the fact that Maurice was not stable, but 1,237 yds in a season when he missed the equivalent of several games -- and on a team that couldn't run a lick aside from QB draw plays and scrambles. He was something to watch.
