Ohio State 92, Norfolk State 59 (Final)

Well I just got back from the game and boy did I have a view. I got a seat upgrade from section 327 to 118 right behind the hoop. Here's my opinions:

What I liked:
- Twiggy keeps improving and boy was that a hell of a dunk
- We got Terence more involved
- Foster plays solid offense and defense, consistently
- Lewis was taking it to the paint and hitting his free throws
- Everyone on the team got PT and scored at least one point, except Payne, but he was only in for a minute
- For once we improved from the first half in the second half
- Matta just flat out coaches

What I didn't like:
- Turnovers, especially in the first half
- Butler, who normally plays solid defense, got burned a few times
- Too many wild 3's. I want to see more penetration, then you can kick it out for the open look
- Terence getting a bonehead foul at the end of the 1st half
- I might sound like a broken record, but Syl. He just didn't seem with it to me, and took some wild shots.

Overall, good game coming off one days rest. Plenty to improve on however. They will get another one days rest before the next game. I hope to see a better first half next time.

B4 I give a my opinion of the game I want to comment on this quote by Bn earlier in the thread. Yes Butler worked all summer on his game and especially his jumper, they tried to change it last year, but he is back to the old style. Last year he had reins on him so to speak about when to shoot and what to do, this year he has more chances within the offense, and the penetration will come as that was the best part of his game in high school. the pull up 15 footer was never missed.

As for not being a true PG I am just curious as to why you say that.

Has Butler improved his outside shot or what? Would like to see him penetrate more, but he is not a true point guard, he will be here next year.

Ok now on to the game:

- First Twig is the most improved player on the team. From all aspects of his game.
- Good to see Dials get involved early and often.
- 3 point shooting is very good. Lets just hope we can keep it like that
- 6 guys in double digits is also very good.
- We really did look like a top 25 team out there pounding them.
- Free throw shooting was much better tonite
- nice to see Bell drill that long range shot.

The negatives

- The sloppy play early, but it isnt like they really needed to come out and dominate this team. I know they need to come to play all the time, but I think they were still playing at the speed they were playing at saturday which is a whole different game then what they played tonite.
- Syl, while he is a good shooter, hustles and is really a pretty good player, sometimes you just have to question where his head is.

And the play of the game was that dunk by Twig. Holy shit that was amazing, We would of had another if Lewis would of been able to grab that pass from Butler.

And for the crowd, you have to remember that school is out right now, and it isnt like many students want to come back just for a game against Norfolk st. I think once we get into bigger games on the scehule there will be more people at the games.

(25) OHIO ST 92, NORFOLK ST 59

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- J.J. Sullinger scored 15 points to lead six players in double figures, and Ohio State used runs before and after halftime to pull away for a 92-59 win over Norfolk State on Monday night.

Terence Dials had 13 points and led the Buckeyes (5-0) with eight rebounds. Ron Lewis added 12 points, Je'Kel Foster had 11 and Jamar Butler and Ivan Harris each scored 10.

Calvin Brown led the Spartans (2-5) with 16 points and Tony Murphy had 12. Norfolk State didn't have any one else score in double figures and shot just 39 percent from the floor.

Ohio State improved to 10-0 against teams from the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and began a season with five wins for the first time since going 6-0 to start 2001-02.

The first matchup between the schools was closer than expected for the first 15 minutes, with the Spartans trailing only 23-20.

The Buckeyes closed the first half with a 14-2 surge and opened the second half on a 16-8 spurt to take a 53-30 lead with 15:39 remaining. Sullinger had five points in each run.

Norfolk State got no closer than 17 points after that and trailed by as many as 36.

Ohio State scored 55 points in the second half, partly due to a 10-of-20 performance from 3-point range. Ohio State finished 14-of-32 behind the arc, while Norfolk State was 4-of-12.

The Buckeyes also had a large advantage at the foul line, making 24-of-30 while the Spartans went 9-of-16.

The balanced scoring attack was nothing new for the Buckeyes. Foster, Lewis, Dials, Butler and Sullinger all average double figures.

All of Norfolk State's losses have come against nonconference opponents.

Would like to see a clip of that dunk. I was listening on 1460, sounded sweet.

It was #4 on the SportsCenter Top 10 plays. The Top 10 clip airs about 6-7 minutes before the top of the hour, if you happen to be near a television. I got up a little early this morning, just so I could see if it was on there.

Observations from a Basketball Junkie....

Ohio State 92
Norfolk St. 59

This contest was never in doubt, even when it was 25-20 at the 4:32 point in the first half. The Buckeyes came out a passive and showed little to no intensity on the defensive end for most of the firsthalf. Lets be honest, playing Norfolk State is not like playing Indiana. The intensity just was not there for most of the game. The crowd felt the same, as they seemed to seat on their hands for most of the game, I will not go into that issue, thats a completely different issue....Back to the game.

The Buckeyes started a little slow shooting the ball, only hitting 4 of their first 11 attempts but recovered nicely to end the game shooting 47.4% from the field (27-57), we continued to shoot it well from behind the arc, 43.8% (14-32). Foster shot 3-6 from behind the arc and is in the top ten in the nation in 3-point shooting, hitting 61% (11-18). Its obvious to everyone that Butler had really worked hard to improve his outside shot and in this contest, he hit 3-5 from downtown, he is shooting 50% for the year, (8-16).

Turnovers have been a problem so far this season and last night we turned the ball over 13 times and forced 16. Many of our turnovers were a cause of what I believe to be a big weakness on this team, no true point guard. The majority of the time, Foster and Butler bring the ball up the court and even though both of these players are very talented they lack point guard skills. We will have to wait until next year for our true point guard.

Rebounding has been a suprise so far this season, against Norfolk State, we owned the rebounding edge, 38-27. Dials led the way with 8 total, followed by Lewis with 5. Twigs chipped in with 4, 3 on the offensive glass.

A great sign is our improvement from the free throw line, we shot 80% from the line last night, 24-30. Lewis has made an impact on this area, he was 5-5 last night. He consistently gets to the line. This is exactly what we need. Dials got to the line 7 times and Sullinger 6. We need points from the line.

Overall, an average performance from the squad last night. It wasn't suprising we came out a step slow for most of the half, but as the game went on, they played with more intensity. I think all of us are waiting for this team to put together two good halfs of basketball.

Next up is Belmont (3-3) and then Iowa State (6-2) on the road....

As for not being a true PG I am just curious as to why you say that.

First of all, I mean no disrespect to Butler and his ability, but in my personal opinion, Butler is more of a #2 guard who scores. Does he have point guard skills? Yes, but not to the level that you normally see in the Big Ten. He rarely looks to penetrate and on occasion has trouble with pressure. Once again these are my personal opinions. Its not a knock on him as a player, I just think he is better suited at the #2 spot. His assist to turnover ratio is only 1.75. Maybe as the year goes he will get comfortable at the position, but a telling sign is the fact that Foster has been bringing the ball up about half the time.

I guess we will agree to disagree on this one crazybuck.....
