Ohio State 90, VMI 57 (Final)

Saw the replay of the game. We're clearly getting better and learning as we go. It's great that we get to play North Carolina next, because even if we get pounded it'll be a great learning experience for such a young team.

VMI shot 11-49 from 3-pt land...a team that relies on the 3-pointer like VMI cannot shot like that and expect to be even close let alone win.

Couldn't see the game, but from the sounds of the radio and you guys in the thread, it sounds like we rebounded, while VMI isn't a great team by any means, that is what we need to continue to do...

The 3 point shooting concerns me some...If Butler is off we could struggle on given nights and while we have KK and Hunter who can score down low, right now we don't have guys creating enough, like with the pass, off the dribble, and thru sets to really beat top tier teams, unless we are shooting great...

I am not saying we can't do those things, just that there seems to be some standing, some passing around the perimeter without a purpose, dribbling with out a purpose...

Once again all this will come and this was our downfall against when our outside shots werent falling we just kept on shooting, instead of working the offense...

We are going to have a big test on our hands on Wednesday...All we can ask for at this point is for this team to continue to show improvement, and not take steps backward...We have the talent to play with UNC, just not the experience and continuity as a team on offense and defense to be a team at this time that we could feel very good about us beating teams like UNC...Like I said we can get there, just going to take some work...

I just want to hit on Diebler, I couldn't see the game tonight, It did sound like he did some good things once again off the bounce, which is hopefully good for his confidence, it really seems like he is really pressing alot, and I for one will not be surprised and I am sure most of you won't be either when he bust out and has that big game...Hopefully it is Wednesday...

Men's basketball: Koufos' play inside propels OSU to win

NEAL C. LAURON Dispatch
Kosta Koufos, shooting over VMI's Quinn Brownfield, paced Ohio State with 22 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.

Sizewise, Virginia Military Institute looked like it matched up pretty well with the Ohio State men's basketball team. Shuttling five players at a time on and off the floor and pressing full-court, the Keydets raised the pace to a level the Buckeyes had trouble handling.
They matched up well with everyone but Kosta Koufos. Against the 7-foot Ohio State freshman, they simply were overmatched.
"He's a stud," VMI coach Dugger Baucom said. "He's a pro."
Even with front-line partner Othello Hunter out for all but the first four minutes because of an upper-respiratory infection, Koufos had a double-double by halftime and finished with 22 points and a career-high 14 rebounds last night to lead the Buckeyes to a 90-57 victory over VMI in St. John Arena.

This was a good win for us, it showed we have potential to grow and be very good. NC will probably hand our butts to us but if we play as well as I expect even that will be good for us as we learn to play with the big dogs.:oh:

OSU calms VMI before the storm

Monday, November 26, 2007 Doug Lesmerises

Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus- In two days, Ohio State hosts the No. 1 team in the country, so at least the Buckeyes worked up a sweat Sunday night.
Spanked by Texas A&M in a 23-point loss on Friday in New York, the Buckeyes returned to somewhat familiar surroundings for a 90-57 victory over Virginia Military Institute at St. John Arena.
Displaced from their usual home at Value City Arena by "Sesame Street Live: Elmo Makes Music," the Buckeyes were momentarily thrown off by VMI's scrambling defense and 3-point offense, leading only 29-25 with five minutes left in the first half. But they took a 14-point halftime lead before turning the game into the blowout behind 22 points and 14 rebounds from freshman center Kosta Koufos of Canton GlenOak.

It was very hard to judge our rebounding in the game last night with VMI jacking up 3s all night long or getting baskets on turnovers. As has been stated, the rebounding test will come this Wednesday and hopefully there will be some improvement from the Texas A&M game.

I am not saying we can't do those things, just that there seems to be some standing, some passing around the perimeter without a purpose, dribbling with out a purpose...
We continued to pass the ball around the perimeter last night without anybody really taking the ball to the basket. We really need to start doing this especially if Lighty and J. D. do not start hitting from the outside....

..
He keeps showing improvement in all facets of his game except for his shooting. He had some wide open, and I mean wide open, 3s which he missed last night. It is just so hard to figure out why is outside shots are not falling.

1. We must have been watching different games; I saw lots of penetration, including Diebler, Butler, Turner, and Lighty. We were fouled on many of those, however, which may affect your perceptions.

2. Diebler cannot hit the ocean from the beach. After his dunk I heard commentary to the effect that "he finally found a shot he can hit." Note he's missed several layups. I sat next to a ref who had refereed several of Diebler's AAU and high school games; he pointed out that Diebler's tOSU shots are often close, but not in; he thinks it's now a mental thing. Said he would never have believed the struggles given how great a shooter he was in HS.
