Ohio State 88, Ashland 59 (Final)

its this time of year again. some of you are new/newer around here, and i dont seem to have the time i once had. this is going to be a late and abridged version of the rundown, these things tend to run on and end up sounding negative. points of emphasis are easier than positive reinforcement and certainly provide more to learn from.

here we go

general stuff: lets be honest, ashland represents a night off. these kids have been at the grindstone since practice opened about two weeks ago. no real off days, no easy practices, no easy day or two days before a game. ashland in reality was an off day, everyone of the players was happy to see a diff uni, to get to bang somebody else. this exhibition represent an easier workload, less pounding, less running less abuse than the two weeks prior. this was obvious. the team looked beat, worn and looked like they were carrying cinder blocks physically.

poinits of emphasis
team defense, lets be honest, it sucked. rotation was not there, slow or just poor.
rebounding, always seems to be a things with mattas clubs they dont rebound as a team well early, you had a lot of young guys looking to get out and run (a good thing) they did not though work as a team to secure the ball so they could get out and run.
positional play, the team did not look fundamentally sound. out of mattas id say normal sixteen sets i think i could clearly identify 3, is that cuz he only ran a handful? or was the team out of whack? im guessing both. you could count the number of times that the team ran the transitional game well last night, guys didnt run their lanes, guys were in the wrong lanes, guys were doubled up etc etc.

player notes
butler: play was not up to expecations early on, lets be honest something was said at halftime, jamar came out said ok boys thats it, dropped some buckets made some passes, game over. how much commentary is needed on a kid who has played in what 100 games

twig: one of everybodys favorite whipping boys here it seems. personally im a fan, solid contributor, not much spectacular, smart cerebral player. the perm shot seemed to surprise some people, i ask where they were last year? once again no much commentary hes a known quantity at this point.

lighty: regaining some of the explosiveness he had in hs prior to his knee injury. should be interesting to see how his game evolves and whether or not he can elevate his game as needed, or if someone can step up to provide the needed force and contributions on the offensive end. david is one of the players i based my tired and worn out on, he didnt have as much fire in his legs. he had the effort, i just dont feel he had had pop and explosion in his legs, the lack of an off or easy day.

O: lets be honest you cant teach somethings, you cant teach his wingspan, you cant teach his 43 inch vertical you cant teach the fact his hands are like bricks, you take what you get. that being said, othello you can tell has another year of basketball experience. watching him you have to keep in mind i have more fingers on my right hand than he has years experience playing basketball. often looks terrific often looks terrible. hard to gauge against a team like ashland how his off the ball and on the ball defense have improved within the team concept of the game. you saw this last year that his inability to play with basketball smarts, knowledge and lack of a full understanding of the games cost him minutes down the stretch as competition increased and teams got more tape on him, especially as big ten play went on and teams faced O for the second time around. his five turnovers bothered me, a kid who last year his improvement was enormous. will he continue to put the effort and time in and will the developmental curve be so steep, or will he flatten out? time will tell, othello needs to contiune his improvement if this team would look to succeed.

i believe that ends the known players
the unknowns

pj hill: lets be honest here, the kid plays like a street baller, he slings the rock around, hops into the his move and carries the ball i like i tot the briefcase to the work in the morning. seriously i commented during the game before he was called for palming that he needed a suitcase to put the thing in. i see a kid who dribbles too much, has a tendency to take 2 possibly 3 to many dribbles. you may not see this against an ashland, as competition increases and play gets better you will see little things compound and show up big. once you get in big ten play tendency for one extra dribble is analyzed on tape, scouted, shown and results in a turnover and any easy opportunity the other way with a fast break. lets be honest here, we saw it last year with mike conley, it began to improve at christmas time it was not until mid jan that his game and this extra dribble (he had a 1 to 2 tendency not 2 to 3) problem ease. kids are able to get away with these things at a lower level of competion. hill also bothered me with his compounded of issues, at one point last night he turned the ball over, fouled a guy, then made a poor pass back on the offensive end then back at the defensive end got beat on a backdoor cut. in big ten play you can make a mistake, you cant compound your mistakes, you cant show weakness, you cannot, cannot repeat mistakes on multiple trips down the floor. hills defense left a lot to be desired, i saw someone commented about a box em one, i dont know what kind of defense he played before, from the looks of it, it was not within a system that was highly structured. hills off ball defense should give matta ample opportunity to work with pj. footwork needed a lot work, positioning tended to be high and over, he tends to loss his man, tends to slide out of position and also tends to lock in solely on his man. no doubt though pj is a high energy player, what is his role longterm? at best should provide atleast a solid plug.

turner: big long rangy player, possibly i think could fill david lighty type role this year. has a nice build and the ability to defend three positions. he has nice court vision but like like pj tends to have an extra bounce with the ball. tendency to turn the ball over when pressed. reality played limited role last night on offense, played nice wing and combo defense, though has a tendency to make bad closeouts and play outside of how and where he should be playing. actually looked better than expected. you can see the silk in the silky smoothness.

wallace: this kid has the build of a football player, very large build, large frame. should a nice pull up float/jump shoot down from the super short corner. his rebounding intrigued me at times hed attack the rim without caution, other times a sound rebounder with excellent positioning, checking his man out, other times he was more interested in getting up the court and looking for a show stopping dunk. tended to leave his feet to much defensively and floated on off ball defense.

madsen: a dublin product via a stint in nashville. kyle plays a game similar to twig, looked nervous and tight. lets be honest the kid hasnt played within the team structure as a member of the team for over a year, it showed. projects to a role similiar to twigs next year. the ability to steal minutes, play good position defense make a team work, give up some fouls and play hard while allowing blows for guys is kyles role for the year.

diebler: lets be honest, this kid lead the nation in scoring last year, we all expected him to come in and chuck up 14 3s. he didnt have much lift on his shot and for most of the game settled to stand around and shoot. will he be able to do this all year? my guess is more so than last night, he played a team of boys from ohio who lets be honest most of them had been bitched by what ill call the fast show on wood in ohio the last couple of years. nobody wanted to give up that in the schott. the kid had his hs team right behind the bench, the pressure of that, no legs. it showed. i did however like when diebler used a pump fake, got the the middle of the floor created a scoring change, a short opportunity and a basket. a move id expect to see from him ore. defensively he left a lot to be desired. he came out and looked awful on that end of the floor, his second rotation he looked better, still struggled, then he began to settle down. as the game wore on he settled in defensively. his close out and rebounding/boxing out will be points of emphasis. jon has shown he can be the man, he needs to simplify his game, work on the little things if he wants to reach his potential at this level. his development will result in the ability to play man or being forced to be a zone team.

kof: from this post on will be known as hoover, no other name from jo. i am claiming the rights to that nickname, use it if you like, just remember where it came from. his hands are amazing for a guy his size. things ill toss out there, some of you are amazed with his 3 point game, screw that. focus on his ability at 8 to 14 feet. that is where the hoover will clean up. his ability to essentially do as he pleases from that range is what will allow the hoover to be effective. he has a few nice post moves, though he does have a tendency to not square up, use the wrong hand and what tends to irritate me the most is his footwork lags behind his play. i look for the hoover to improve his footwork and thus increase his effectiveness. it all starts with footwork, fundamentals will allow a stronger base and open up many more opportunities for the hoover and his teammates.defensively some work thier, though i was impressed since i saw the hoover in action last winter he has improved his positioning, i would like to see him continue to be smart on picking his spots when deciding to protect the rim.

danny joe and mark titus: who knew they were on scholie last year? i didnt.

dallas: last year the comments were made about his physical shape and his conditioning, does he have the desire to play at this level. the kid was fat, he still could use some work, though he has a nice big body, keeping that under control will be important. footwork is a major thing for dallas he is raw on his footwork and tends to set up position in less than acceptable places. dallas has the body to bang with the big boys in conference play and his physical style will come in handy down the stretch. dallas has shown improvement since i last saw him in the winter and i look for this to continue. ps what the hell size shorts were those? xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxl?

in general lots of things to work on, its good. matta had not scouted ashland and is not going to scout or watch any prior on the next exhb game. this team is very young and has lots of room for improvements, a very good thing if you ask me. id like to go on but im going to go watch the hockey game. possibly more to come...

we won't get fooled again

Don't let this game with Ashland fool you. The Bucks are much better than what we saw Wednesday night.

Hill had a few miscues and you should look at his stellar performance hawking Butler in the open scrimmage for an idea of what he will bring to the table for those 4-8 minutes per game he will be on the floor.

This team is deep with 11 players who will contribute. They are versatile and talented. Matta will have them playing lights out defense by the time they hit the big apple mid month. They will win with aggressive and at times manic defense that will frustrate opponents, disrupt guards trying to run an offense, and drive opposing coaches nuts.

I see a lot of defensive minded players. Most are long, quick, and have uncanny court sense and high hoops IQ.

The scoring will be balanced. When needed Koufos, Diebler, Butler and Lighty will take charge offensively. Don't look for a star. That is not what this team will be about. Think......

Defense
Depth
Balance
Stick backs
Limiting turnovers
Converting breakaways

Team after Team and coach after coach will leave the court shaking their heads wondering what the hell just happened to them. Remember the '02 football season? Think of this team as "Tressel ball on hard wood"
