SAN ANTONIO ? Remember the Alamodome. It shouldn't be hard if you're a Buckeyes or a Volunteers fan.
Ohio State's January win over Tennessee launched a now 20-game winning streak. The No. 1-ranked Buckeyes' 85-84 victory on Thursday night instantly propelled Ohio State into NCAA tournament lore.

Buckeyes rally past Vols to make Elite 8

JAIME ARON

Associated Press

SAN ANTONIO - Ohio State senior Ron Lewis knew better than to look at the scoreboard. One look at the Tennessee Volunteers told him all he needed to know. Although the top-seeded Buckeyes trailed by 17 and freshman sensation Greg Oden was in deep foul trouble, Lewis could tell his team had the Vols right where they wanted them.
"Their body language was like they already had the game won," Lewis said.
Lewis and Mike Conley shook Tennessee out of it by tying the game midway through the half, then the energized Buckeyes outplayed the Volunteers down the stretch for an 85-84 victory Thursday night in the semifinals of the NCAA South Regional.

An OSU block party

Oden's defense stops Tennessee on final shot

San Antonio -- Seventy- three days later, it was happening again. The destruction was taking place on Texas hardwood instead of desert turf, but the shock and awe was very familiar.
A top- ranked Ohio State team, basketball this time, not football, was blitzed by an underrated Southeastern Conference opponent with more speed and no fear. The dominance was so thorough, you had to wonder how the Buckeyes were ranked No. 1 in the first place.
And then it stopped.

OSU gets lifeline with free throws

Friday, March 23, 2007Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
San Antonio- Ohio State has been saved at least twice this season by opponents missing late-game free throws, a lucky bit of karma for a team whose primary ball-handler is a major question mark at the foul line.
Freshman point guard Mike Conley entered play Thursday night shooting 67.5 percent from the foul line, ranking him sixth on the Buckeyes. A smart player who always seems to make the right pass, considered one of the best point guards in the country, Conley is the type of player you'd expect to hit at least 80 percent of his free throws.
"Yeah, I can see that," Conley said. "It's something I need to work on, but it's not mechanical, it's mental more than anything else."

Down by 20, Ohio State storms back
Friday, March 23, 2007
By JAIME ARON
AP Sports Writer

SAN ANTONIO Maybe now folks will realize there's more to Ohio State than Greg Oden.

The big man finally looked like a freshman, getting mired in foul trouble as the top-seeded Buckeyes fell behind by 20 points before halftime. But senior Ron Lewis and fellow freshman Mike Conley bailed out Oden and lifted Ohio State past Tennessee, 85-84, on Thursday night in the semifinals of the NCAA South Regional.

Lewis scored 25 points, and Conley had nine of his 17 from the foul line, including the winner with 6.5 seconds left.

But Conley missed a second shot, giving Tennessee one last chance. Ramar Smith grabbed the rebound and went all the way to the rim with Conley defending him. They went up together and time expired with his ball in the air.

SAN ANTONIO - Last Saturday, the No. 1-seeded Ohio State Buckeyes escaped what seemed like a sure upset loss in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, thanks to an unlikely last-second shot and overtime win against Xavier.
Thursday, Ohio State and its coach, Thad Matta, had much more time to make a comeback, but its victory here against Tennessee in the South regional semifinals was just as improbable.
A re-energized Ohio State team emerged from the Alamodome locker room after halftime and erased a large deficit, pulling off another thrilling comeback win - this time in regulation 85-84.

SAN ANTONIO?Inside the spacious Alamodome, the stress level stretched a full 60 feet from the floor, where the first row of Ohio State fans fawned, then fretted and finally freaked over their Buckeyes last night.
OSU earned an appearance in the Elite Eight, where they will meet Memphis on Saturday, when 7-foot freshman Greg Oden blocked a Tennessee shot in the final seconds, preserving an 85-84 win.
