Ohio State 75, Florida 84 (final - NC Game)

Well I mean you have to consider something, FSU, Miami and Florida are all major programs in the same state. Where I am at we have USC and UCLA and there's all these "I am fans of local sports teams" fans, ie: bandwagon fans. So as Florida has success, they get the same morons who were following Miami around, and FSU before that.

Throw in the fact that before 1983 all Florida schools pretty much sucked at everything and you've got a fan base that doesn't understand how the 'big boys' behave.

They're so "cute" when they're learning how to be big time, don't you agree?

It took "ohio" boys (zook and meyer) to teach them football...

I don't know if it is the Gators being new at winning. Every team has a bad part of their fan base. But, I don't think it is fair to classify all people in Gainesville, or the south as rednecks, racists, etc.

True...but i just can't picture going on their board and bashing them (win or lose)...

They let us in around 2 pm, and the team showed up at about 2:45. They drove the bus right into the arena, and received a spirited welcome from the fans. Lewis thanked everyone for the support as well as Matta, who added how proud he was of the team among other comments. Afterwards they came up to the stands and worked the crowd (autographs and handshakes, I opted for the latter).

Fans warmly teased Conley, making sure he was coming back... and he said he would be.

edit: Apparently oden did work the line, I just missed him. I did take off after about 15 min of the 'crowd working', so maybe he was in the bathroom.

I didn't have my good equipment with me, but I got a few basic shots of the scene:

From the Ozone's front page:

This was posted a little after midnight, so I'm not sure if 'tomorrow' means Tuesday, but I'm guessing it does.

Men's Basketball: According to an OSU spokesman, the OSU basketball team will be at the Schottenstein Center tomorrow between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM. Fans wishing to welcome the team back to Columbus should plan on doing so at the arena. The arena will be open to to entry to the public sometime before 2:00 PM.

I don't think Oden worked the crowd, but honestly I can't blame him with the amount of uncomfortable conversations & pleading he would have to endure. It certainly wasn't to avoid the autographs, as the staff/assistants always say they have to help get Greg out of there or he'd sign stuff all night.

Thanks for the update and pics:osu:

I'm absolutely terrible with guestimating numbers, but I'd guess there were 300+. Someone else there, feel free to chime in. I was also in the front row at one end, so it was hard to judge.

I'd say one sideline (bball court length) was 30-35% full.

Thanks for the reply. I hope the University plans an opportunity for a larger reception with more advance notice so that this team may receive a proper hero's welcome.

Feels nice to finally be relevant in collegiate athletics, doesn't it?

The only dissapointment of the trip to Atlanta was the lack of OSU support from the fan base. Granted, its like a 5 hour drive for UF fans and 8-9+ for OSU fans, relatively short notice, Monday night game, etc. (not to mention all the SEC/UF supporters in the South) but I expected a bigger turnout. What seems almost flattering as an Ohio State fan is the sheer level of hatred, insecurity, and volitility coming from a fairly large majority of Gator fans. To get that kind of rise from an opposing school's fan-base (something I haven't experienced in a long time, even at scUM games) was a very unique experience. The chants, the hazing, and the tension seemed like we as a team collectively shitted in their cheerios, and ran over their dogs - rather than losing to them (and 3 times at that!). We must be doing something right to get that kind of response from a school we barely play.

You just don't understand what it is to be a Florida fan. Every rival SEC team hates us and Miami and F$U loathe our existence. The passion almost every week is incredible and Gator fans have learned to bring the intensity with the best of them. Ohio State has a large loud passionate fan base that travels well and so they just simply become the next target. I have lived here (Hilliard) for the past 17 years and outside of Michigan, Penn State and Notre Dame, Buckeye games are casual picnics where Buckeye fans know they will win and so do the cordial opposing fans. Of course just being in the state of Georgia brings out the ugliness in Gator fans
