Ohio State 71, Iona 53 (final)

I enjoyed it alot. I also think Iona is a bit better than their record would indicate. The Big Ten season is gonna be a tough one, everyone in the conference played well today. I'm really looking forward to it.... :oh:

The first half was a feeling out process. We tried running a press with Lauderdale and Mullens, but it just isn't effective with Lauderdale at half-court playing in space and trying to trap wing guards. Iona broke the press and set up their offense with 30 seconds on the clcok nearly every time.

Bottom line, is without David, this team is a half-court set team. The 2-2-1 press creates offense on steals and quick shots. When the other team sees the 2-2-1 as token pressue, it has zero effectiveness other than taking a few seconds off of the shot clock. Lighty provides the athletiiscm to put on a NASTY trap defense playing the 4, and it opens the court up a TON.

Our fast break points were way down today.

#1 students are kicked out of the dorms after finals week, so that makes several thousand (if not tens of thousands) students that might attend the games over winter break homeless in Columbus

#2 heaven forbid that kids go home to see their families for the holidays, calling people out for choosing to be with their families rather than attend a game against Iona, especially when most of them have no place to stay in Columbus (the ones in the dorms) is the thing that is ridiculous in my opinion

Completely understand that. Over the last few years though, the students haven't asked but demanded that the student section be extended to include additional parts or the entirity of the lower bowl at the Schott. I've let my feelings be known about the situation, and over the last two years, the students simply haven't held up their own end of the bargain as to attending games, even during the amazing NCAA runner-up year we had with Oden & Co (which had almost as many freshman as it did non-freshman). Sure, the students show up for the big games, but if we're having a "down year" or they're on winter break, or we're playing a "lousy" team (like the Iona's of the world, who comprise the majority of our home schedule), everyone sees and hears what they did today out of the student section. Because of that, the students pleas will fall on deaf ears until they can prove they can show up for every single game like the "old foogy" (sp?) season ticket holders do who currently occupy those seats.

Sounds to me like you are describing a young team , just not in a nutshell. They are freshman and sophomores, not NBA'ers . Give them time to improve, especially since we just lost David. Today we started 5 who never have played together before so it stands to reason they have to get used to getting their game together.
Your response kinda shocked me. I know I didn't focus very much at all on the positives of what we could take out of this game, but you know what? I thought we played a pretty terrible game for the majority of the game (22-24 minutes) and I saw a whole lot that I thought we can work on. Call it tough love, call it being too critical (though I think my comments were spot-on and not harsh or scathing by any means), but if you want to hear some really positive stuff about these guys, you can refer back to my thoughts from our exhibition game. I really am sorry if anyone was offended by anything I said, but I call them like I see them.

These guys' big year should be next year, but that isn't a given. We have THREE guys on this team that will be giving serious considerations on declaring early for the NBA draft after this year (Turner, Mullens, Buford), and I'm expecting to lose more than one of those guys at the conclusion of the season. Because of that, these guys can't count on next year being "the year".

And the schedule is only going to get tougher. We could honestly lose 3 of our next 5 games (West Virginia, @Minnesota, @Michigan State). We're at a real crossroads here in our season and we could go either way with how competitive the Big Ten looks right now. We will continue to get better and improve, but the time to put up or shut up starts now.

Yeah, I understand your position. I feel like defending the students most of the time though since I am one. I've never been a proponent of moving the student section in the Schott, so I don't really feel any personal responsibility for not making noise in the student section, and considering I've been too poor to buy basketball tickets since '05 I really feel removed from the situation. If you want to sponsor me by purchasing season tickets for me I promise I'll scream my ass off in the student section at every game. Deal? :wink2:

The problem isn't students and it isn't the PSL's...It is really both of them combined...The problem becomes more the PSL's when there is a bigger game because they don't get loud...The students when there are loud and screaming...But like today and all the other non conference games neither have shown up...

Also the student packages have not started yet, as they are for big ten season and I think WVU, so we should see more students at those games when they begin...

I know all of your very to be very surprised by this but I really don't have a whole lot to say:) that as not already been said.

I guess in reading quite a few of the posts I keep seeing David's name mentioned. I think we all really need to get by that because he probably will not be back for at least two months and we have to support the team as they are. Let's remember that Lighty has said two more years of college experience than Buford and so I don't know why people keep trying to compare the two. Buford has some strong points also.

I think the reason that Madsen saw quite a bit out playing time yesterday was because that Coach was not very pleased with the defense of either BJ or Dallas and Kyle might know a little bit about playing the zone defense because of his years at Vanderbilt.

One of the things that I am very pleased with, and I notice that cbf40 took exception to this, was their free-throw shooting. I thought with the exception of Dallas that all of the guys shot their free throws pretty well. I have not looked at the box score. I think that free-throw shooting this year is much better than what we have seen the past two and will help us win some games this year. That's it.

Boy this team is fun to watch, I haven't missed a game yet. The chemistry is definetly there and enough talent to make it work. The defense and heady play is very encouraging. I really think we are going to have a great season (I know, bold prediction ).

OSU was 26-35 from the free throw line yesterday, good for 74.3%. I could live with that. Diebs was 11-12 and Turner was 8-13.
Agree. I think any time you shoot free throws at 75% as a team you are doing pretty well. I would not expect Turner to go 8-13 many times and I am pretty sure 3 of those other misses were by Dallas who reads he needs to improve because he will get hacked quite a bit with his power.

My only thing is, Diebler and Simmons aren't going to get a lot of free throws like they had against Iona, which is what boosted the total...

Turner has been solid on the year, but he missed more than he should and Lauderdale is going to struggle no matter what...

I wish I had that kind of money, 86. I really do. And I apoligise to you and the other students for my words, but that whole deal is a sore subject for us season ticket holders. Bottom line is that the season ticket holders have to be louder and get themselves into the game, and the students need to put their butts in the seats.

The one thing I should have mentioned is that the biggest problem in the whole thing has nothing to do with either the season ticket holders or the students. It's the accoustics in the Schott. If you've ever been to a men's basketball game in St. John's or have partaken in a Skull session before a football game, you know what I'm talking about. "Old people sitting on their hands" wasn't a problem until they moved to the new arena. Suddenly, you have to teach the old dogs new tricks to get the same sort of noise you were hearing before.

Thats a good point. Before, it kinda looked like when we needed someone to hit them in crunch time, we were making sure they had to foul Evan because he was the hot hand. Diebler's performance from the line shows we have a 2nd guy we should all feel comfortbale having get fouled late in the game.

I know that Dallas is working on his free throws, though. I've seen him use 3 different motions when shooting from the line. The ones he shot against Iona looked the most natural, but it still looks awkward. I think he's thinking too much. Needs to loosen up a little bit. I know Mullens shoots them all the time. They ought to buddy-up.

Not real sure if I would say forcing, or the guys not being on the same page...The no look to Turner was a thing of beauty, as he had the whole zone moving right and then he threw it into Turner in the lane, who ducked as he was not looking, and the other was the pass to Lauderdale in the post, who for whatever reason didn't have his hands up, either he was pushed in the back which it looked like or he wasn't ready for the pass...

But There are at least 3 passes in the 2 games before today where he lobbed it when Lauderdale or Mullens had their guys pinned and led to easy dunks...

Absolutely agree. I can live with those type of turnovers far more than the lazy passes at the top of the key leading to lay-ups or the dribbling into a double or triple team. Guys have got to be ready for passes.

This team played FLAT in the first half and for the first 2-4 minutes of the 2nd half. Pulling Lauderdale and Mullens for the extra guard and Kyle Madsen gave this team the effort and energy to pull away in the 2nd half. I say give Madsen the game ball. When he was in, we were actually getting rebounds, getting down the floor quicker on both ends, and playing with that extra spark.

100% agree on this, too. For whatever reason, the rebounding and defensive intensity with Lauderdale and Mullens together just wasn't there. I was surprised to see Matta pull them both, but very pleased with the result of that move.

Turner was 23-26 (88%) going into the Butler game and has since gone 6-9, 6-8, 8-13 (20-30 for 67%). 67% won't cut it in those tight B10 games.

Hard to get the crowd excited when you play as poorly (and as boringly)as we did the first half. Also doesn't help when only THREE ROWS of students show up for the game and the band doesn't attend. I know it's winter break and all, but that's a little rediculous. The real student fans showed up today and kudos to them. They weren't loud, but they were mighty.

the students dont care. i still say take away their chairs and make it first come, first serve. as far as the band, well they suck. the only thing worse than the band at a basketball game is that moron who comes out during tv timeouts. i have no idea who he is but im glad im not related to him. im related to some baboons but nobody as bad as him. he is awful. embrassing really...

To add to CB40's post:

yup, first 24 more minutes were flatter than two year old RC Cola. mullens actually played well on offense and kep the team in the game.

matta went to madsen for a spark, it worked eh... kyle played hard and well im not really sure that the point was taken by dallas/bj.

Evan played a terrible first half. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I counted 2 points and 3 turnovers in the first half. I'm glad he decided to turn it on in the 2nd half. He seemed to be the most affected by Lighty's injury. Put a whole lot more pressure on him to perform. Hopefully we can get more players (like Buford, Mullens, Madsen, etc.) to step up and take some of that pressure off of Evan.

ive come to expect turnovers from evan, he played better in the second half.

bufford bugged me. he should be a good rebounder and defender, hes neither. he needs to step it up now that it is crunch time if the team wants to go anywhere. effort/consistency in those two areas are lackluster. he got plenty of minutes, somethign youll continue to see.

Diebler is playing like we all expected him to play last year on offense. That said, I'm awfully proud of how he's performing on defense. He still needs to work on rebounding and blocking his man out, but his hustle is really paying off with steals and contesting shots. He's only going to see more time out there with Lighty out and how he's playing right now. Good to see him shooting the ball confidently too. I don't want to jinx him, but he looks like he could develop into a leader down the line here.

he pulled his teammates away from a fight more than once, best move he made all day.

he also has been a good team rebounder.

Mullens is still playing like he's been playing all year. He shows flashes of brilliance (almost exclusively on the offensive end), followed by reminders that he's only a freshman (the majority of which are on the defensive end). He looks like he's feeling a lot more comfortable in the zone, but he's a step slow. He's letting the forwards that he's guarding have the baseline, he can't contest the long jumpers and 3's, and he's only half the defensive presence that Lauderdale is down in the blocks. That said though, we need to find more ways to get him the ball down low on offense. Iona didn't have an answer for him when he got the ball.

condition leaves something to be desired. def players have hugn him out to dry (bufford) and to a lesser extent diebler/turner.

i beg to differ, he actually has more presence than dallas, teams dont even bring it at him. teams bring it at dallas knowing hell committ a silly foul.

mullens he needs to get the ball down low, and needs to be willing to kick it out to the perm and reset.

ive seen some real nice things from bj. he excites me a lot.

I need to watch Buford more. He's got a beautiful looking shot. He hasn't "gotten it" yet on D, but he works really well with Evan and Diebs. When we're in four guard sets, it's hard to put a body on everybody, especially when Evan or BJ demand a double (or triple) team whenever they touch the ball inside the arc. When he finally "gets it" on D, I think you'll see him being be a better NBA prospect than Evan.

its not a gets it. its an effort/consistency thing. hes never had to play defense, guess what? someone is goign to have a newsflash come conference play when coaches have him scouted down to his choice of toothpaste brand...

Dallas has GOT to work on his free throws!! He's physical enough that he's going to get fouled a lot this year when we start Big Ten play. If he keeps missing (and missing horribly, at that) like he is, teams are going to use the "Hack-A-Shaq" method of defending Dallas. That could be the difference between a W and an L in the Big Ten championship race.

or moving his feet, defensive positioning. dallas has well i dont see what some others have seen. hes playing ok on offense and defensively hes not reboundign and out of position and has given up to many easy baskets for my taste.

In all seriousness, Madsen needs to get in the game once a half. The energy that he brings to our team is contagious. You might not see the stats he gets outside of rebounds, but Madsen was the only big man on the floor when we started pulling away from Iona. I said it once in the exhibition game thread, but Madsen is the most improved player this year from last year. He's gone from a bench-warming program player to a glue guy, role-playing spark this team needs off the bench. Kyle had the 2nd loudest ovation when he was subbed out of the game tonight (next to Evan's curtain call).

hes a plug, nothing more, nothing less. hell see time, important time when he just needs to help keep it close. if we have to rely on him for extended minutes, it could be a long year. physically not really ready for b10 play.

Next to rebounding, this team needs to work on defending that 3-point shot. Too many times we left that guy wide open in the corner. Lauderdale had the unenviable task of guarding #30 (a supposed "7-footer") who could hit the three. His release point was so rediculously high, there really wasn't anything that even Lauderdale could do. You just had to hope he missed it. Besides that situation, there were WAY too many threes let off uncontested.

they shot what half of their shots were threes? dallas close out is well weak, mullens isnt stellar either. get used to the bigs shooting, um will want to do that. maybe he shouldnt have worried abotu blocking the shot, rather a good close out, a seal and rebound?

Want to see more out of Crater. Iona left him WIDE open for stretches of the game, especially early. He needs to prove to the other team that he can hit the jumper and be be a dangerous threat with the ball so that teams won't be more apt to double team Evan or Mullens. Down the stretch, we're going to need more than 2 assists from him. That said, both of those assists were beautiful. He can really put the zip on that ball to get it through traffic.

he also made some iffy choices, his shot leaves something to be desired. he has the ability to run the slow and secondary breaks by getting penetration, id like to see him try and push it to the rack in this situations.

I'd love to see all of our guards drive to the hoop more and create more chances on offense for fouls, dishing to our big men, pull-up jumpers, popping it out to the swing man for 3, etc. It's something that we're really missing and will continue to miss even more with Lighty out.

when you say dishing to big men i hope you dont mean a 90mph belt hight over the head/baseball pass... thats about the only dish ive seen...

Overall, I think there's still a lot left to be desired. This game came at exactly the right time. If we would have played a ND or Miami today, we would have lost. Looking forward to seeing us progress without Lighty against UNC Ashville and get that momentum going into the West Virginia game.

it is early.

Thad is doing amazing stuff with these guys. Considering that Groce is no longer helping him coach on the sidelines, it makes what he's doing just that much more impressive.
still a good group of guys in major, peters etc.

Almost forgot. One of the lamest halftime shows ever. Had the potential to be hilarious, but it was just pathetic.

Give me the frisbee dogs or jump-rope girls over that crap any day.
