Ohio State 69 Northwestern 72 (Final)

Honestly, I thought the intensity and play was there, Northwestern just couldn't miss. I'm pretty pissed about Turner turning the ball over (7 times?), but that is to be expected by now. Tough 2 losses in a row and a bad time to do it with Illinois losing.

We should have killed them, up by 12 at one point, and lose to a NW team that seemed to just not miss, go figure. The Bucks ALWAYS get everyones best shot, either it be basketball, or football. We cannot let this slip, a few more wins before the end of the season, then make a nice run through the B10 tourney. Why is Mullens not getting a lot of looks?

I was also hoping to see that one.

I have no idea why it isn't used more often. Coaches would rather call a timeout on the baseline and draw up a play for 3 seconds or less to get off a shot, when they can use a second to get the ball to half-court and call another timeout for an inbounds play with a second or more....

I've never understood that line of thinking.

Outside of that, anyone else a bit put off by Evan's antics tonight?? Trash talking with fans to the point a referee had to step in, cheap shot matches with opposing players, ugly looks at teammates on his mistakes defensively, ugly looks at officials when they called him for fouls/travels/carrying.

Great to see Jon feeling it tonight. 8 threes is a great accomplishment. Unfortunately, it was a 3 point ping pong game and they won.

I think the offense has improved tremendously this year. In my eyes, our guys seem to take plays off on defense. Whether it's backside rebounding, boxing out, getting hands up, closing out a shooter and so on.
Depth, or lack there of, has taken a big tole on our guys.

I think they said he turned it over 8 times but don't quote me on that. As for Northwestern hitting everything, our zone was so soft tonight that they got hot by getting so many wide open looks. I expected our guys to look fresh after having a pretty good sized break and fresh off a loss as well. Lets hope we can right the ship!:osu:

Can we get a repeat of that Hickory glossary that JO put up earlier in the season...

This team lacks toughness, and just overall basketball knowledge...

Diebler was hot, but yet instead of drawing his defender, using him as a decoy, we just let him run around, stand open, or force up shots...

Yes lack of a pg, but if we are going to put the ball in Turner's hands so much he has to be able to see htis stuff...he did right out of the gate, forced the D and got Diebler some open looks...

I didn't read the whole thread, did see someone said something about Turner and his antics tonight, and I agree, there was one time when he jogged back down the court, with his back turned after a turnover, when he finally turned around he was on the same side of the court as BJ and left a guy wide open in the corner for a 3.

Then on to the big guys and all the damn turnovers...I just don't get it...BJ does on the defensive end what he should do on the offensive end. Hold the damn ball with his elbows out, what happened to his drop step, and spin move we have seen from him. Recognize where the defense is and spin away from it...Or how about just being bigger than the defender, so actually ripping the ball thru and shooting over the defender, instead of the half turn jumper that he never makes...I will give him credit for his first career double double, but there were still so many balls that should of been his...One play sticks out in my mind and kinda summarizes his play...It was the one when there was a longer rebound and one of NW's little guards was going for it along with BJ, and as a guard wing player, ususally you try to tip it away from the big man and track it down where you are going...Well that is what BJ tryed to do, instead of using his big body, putting it in front of the guard he tried to dribble it and control it and the smaller quicker guard took it from him after he dribbled it...

Just so much wasted motion still in his game, he could of pinned that little guy 400 times tonight but I think he did it once and still wasn't strong enough to hold the guy off to get the dunk, but did get fouled...

And for anyone that says anything about Matta and not teaching these guys toughness, it is just about these guys not getting it...He flew off the handle when buford took a piss poor slap at the defender and they let the guy get all the way into the lane...

maybe guys are wearing down physically and mentally due to all the minutes being logged, but this was not a game where we should of lost shooting the ball the way we did...

Bingo. We have a glaring lack of depth this year. The injury to Lighty, Crater's transfer, and early entrees into The Association are catching up with this team right now. We have two sophomores averaging over 35 minutes a game and a freshman averaging 28. Hopefully we can make the tourney and win a game or two, and the minutes and experience these young guys are getting right now will be invaluable next year.

Random thoughts:

Northwestern was pretty much only scoring by the three, yet for some reason they continually were getting open looks. Give them credit for knocking them down, though (although, an interesting stat is that we actually made a better percentage of threes last night).

When looking at the boxscore, I was surprised to see we only had 15 turnovers. Watching the game, it seemed like we had over 20. During that 21-3 run that Northwestern went on just after we opened up a 12 point lead, it seemed like we weren't even getting shots off, but rather were turning the ball over every time down the floor.

We were up by 9 at the half and we lost by 3--getting outscored by 12 in the second half won't win many Big Ten games.

At 17-7, 7-6 in the conference, I think we need to go at least 3-2 in our final 5 games to get into the tourney:

vs. Illinois (tough game, but I'd say we have over a 50-50 shot, at home)
vs. PSU (tough game, but should win)
@ Purdue (really tough game)
@ Iowa (should win)
vs. Northwestern (should win)

I have no problem with our offense last night and I am tired of hearing these excuses that this team is young or that they have played so many minutes they are worn down. To those people I would ask for them to look around the Big 10 and other rosters to see how old:! other teams are. I have not read this entire thread but for some reason that game last night stood out as one of the more disappointing Ohio State basketball games that I have watched. Very disappointing and I sure hope that PSU/Illinois did not shoot there what ever last night because we are not a great team and all of our remaining games will be very significant.

best play here, is getting the ball to half-court using as little time as possible, and taking another Timeout. Rarely used though.

That did not cost us the game but I find it very hard to believe that the last play that we saw was the best of coaching staff could come up with. I totally agree the bar should have gone to midcourt and then a timeout.
