Ohio State 68, Iowa 65 (Final)

I'd like to point out that the announcer called it wrong (and repeated several times) that Buford blew a Defensive assignment that resulted in a layup. The Iowa player cut from up top, and Diebs should have followed him a bit.

Not a knock on Diebs, he had a great game. But I saw the same thing happen quite a few times with different players. We could have cut down on the easy opportunities by following the cutter for a step and putting a hand in the passing lane to discourage the pass. We were watching the ball a bit too much.

Overall great win. I liked the intensity PJ brought. We didn't bring IT coming out of half, but we regained our intensity and came out with a good win. Congrats bucks.

I noticed that as well with Diebs...and they call out Buford.

I was so excited for PJ. Nice to see him get meaningful minutes and spark this team. I've said it before, every team needs guys that will play their roles. For as much as I love the Odens and Conleys, you gotta have a soft spot for guys who come in and give everything they have to just be a part of this team.

Man we miss Lighty on Defense and in the huddle. Enough said there.

Man did Iowa shoot the crap out of the 3 today. That's the danger of the zone. No matter how great we look in it, there are always going to be open looks that will get teams back in it in a hurry. When we play teams that are great inside and out, this will be a problem. You can only extend that zone out so far before the middle kills you. With that said, I can't imagine too many teams will shoot that effectively from 3 point range.

Nice win to start out the Big 10. Good to see this young team win a close one without its leader.

I think we are getting to a point that there needs to be a switch up at some point when teams are getting hot with the 3.

It's not that the zone isn't working, because it mostly is. the problem is when teams are hitting 4 5 6 7 8 -3s in a row, the defense never changes up and I think that might get that other team out of their rhythm a bit.

Just an idea and I don't mean to bash, but Ohio State got lucky today that Iowa was relatively lousy down low.

Slight disagreement with you, Mike. The very reason Iowa was so deadly from 3 is the same reason they are lousy down low. They play essentially nothing but guards -- and not especially long ones.

You are unlikely to have a bunch of 6-9 physical specimens who can hoist the 3, unless of course you reside in Chapel Hill.

It's astonishing to me just how much better the Buckeyes were with Dave Lighty than they are without him. As we all know, contributions don't all show up on the stat sheet.

Get well soon, Dave!

Only two games, but we're giving up over 70 ppg without him. With him, it was less than 60. Definitely seems to make a difference, plus he's a veteran compared to the rest of the team. We have to tighten up on defense because he won't be back for awhile and we're not going to win a lot of shootouts.

Good win today, though. With the Crater drama and coming off a bad loss, losing the conference home opener could've really hurt the confidence. The boys should be smiling tonight. :)

Iowa was ridiculously hot from 3

if anyone is lucky it was them, if they werent so hot from 3 they would had been blown out, due to their inability to get anything inside going

IMO Iowa got lucky that OSU didn't exploit the huge advantage they had down low(as I may have screamed at my tv for them to do a time or two today :wink2:).

I think if/when these two teams meet again(not sure of the schedule) Mullens will have more experience and the coaches will go out of their way to pound Iowa in the paint to make up for whatever reason they didn't pound them today.

I feel a little like the Grinch, but I have to say it doesn't seem like a "good win" to me so much as the avoidance of a really bad loss. Iowa isn't a very good team.

It was a "good win" for the reasons I stated and you chose not to quote. The timing and circumstances of this game could've easily produced a loss if the team wasn't focused on the task at hand. Hence my use of the term "good win", despite the opponent.

In addition, any team that manages to shoot 14/28 from three point land is going to be tough to beat on that day, and yet, the Bucks beat them. I'll apologize on behalf of the team if it wasn't impressive enough for you. Better luck next time, I guess. :ohwell:

Yeah, I was disappointed that we didn't get DL and BJ the ball more. The size and strength difference down low was huge and we didn't do too much to exploit it. (Each of them only had 4 points).

It wasn't a great win, but I'm sure they'll take it.

And I have to add...I absolutely love watching Buford shoot the ball. He is the smoothest shooter I've seen in a while.

Right now what dissapoints me is the fact that we can not work the ball down low and then play an in and out game...

The only time we get it down low it seems is off the lob from up top after the ball has been rotated around and one of the big guys has pinned their guy...

It is ridiculous how many times the big guys act like they have position, but really they don't...Guys are coming around them and stealing the pass or deflecting it...

Neither one is getting a good base and holding their position to get the ball...They are playing too high and it doesn't seem like the coaches are catching it...

But we need to find a way to get the big guys involved especially when we have a size advantage like yesterday...

Good solid win tho for a young team...

Heard Lou Holtz make a point today talking about teams not knowing who the goto guy or star is...I think the lose of Lighty hurts more now due to the fact that no one knows their role as they had been established and now trying to be reestablished, and I think they will, but Turner seems to be trying to shoulder too much of the load and forcing too many things...

I also like Diebler running off the screens, and eventually we need the bigs to start slipping them and finding easy dunks...Would like to see him round off a couple and take some 10-15 foot jumpers off them, much like Rip Hamilton does who they said he was watching tape of...

I think some of this fall on the point guard play and the fact in my opinion we get a little impatient on offense and don't make the extra pass or wait for things to develop. Some of this is the loss Lighty roles changing and some is on Simmons. The jump from Juco were he was a score first guy in a league which is a step up from AAU in discipline and organization. He's getting there and I think will be a fine player.

Mullens from high school and AAU days is still learning to get position to do the little things of post play. The jump in effort and energy you have to put into getting position in college versus before is incredible. The jump from being able to have your way against the high school/AAU crowd is a big transition for a big man. Oden was special because he came in and hit the ground running. Hibbert, Thabeet, Patrick O'Bryant, etc all had a learning curve like BJ before they got going.
