Ohio State 64 Illinois 58 (Final)

Still no killer instinct. Up 15 with less than 8 to play and they come all the way back within 2. That should never happen. These guys seem like they're coming along one minute then revert back another. Thats a sign of youth but also confidence. Turner definitely appears he's turning the corner. KK seems like he's asleep out there at times. Butler is Butler. His game is complete, he can do everything on the floor and when he gets help this team rolls along. Hunter is working on getting a paycheck next year. Good for him.

Some of the guys off the bench look ready to play when they get into the game and some dont. I love Twigs work ethic. He doesnt have the most talent in the world but he knows his role. I'd like to see DL in the game more, must be something going on there that Matta and the staff see that we cant. Diebler is streaky at the moment. He's going to lose minutes to Turner the way he's playing. I just hope he continues to play hard and produce when his time comes.

Bottom line is we got another win tonight and thats much better than the alternative. The Jekyll and Hyde act is tough to stomach at times but it sure keeps things exciting.

Still ups and downs and it is just a matter of increasing the number of ups and decreasing the number of downs...

No real player breakdowns for tonight, as we won and overall everyone played good...

The thing that continues to hurt this team are turnovers and defensive rebounding...

If we ever get a game when we take care of both of those and then shoot the ball well we could beat anyone in the country and I truly believe that, but we have to sure up those two areas...

Turner had a great game, played within himself and was effective as a spot up shooter, which I wish we saw more of. Also loved how he was happy for Diebler when he hit that three, really awesome that they can be supportive of each other when they are competing for minutes.

I love Twigs game, you hear so many Buckeye fans moaning and cursing when he goes in but he is truly a solid player who will be missed next year. I feel like he is the best defensive big man we have in terms of playing within the zone, he sets great screens and rolls off of them well, and he has been shooting well recently. He came out with bricks taped to his hands but once he remembered how to catch a basketball he was very effective.

Seemed to have some communication issues and there were three or four times we lost rebounds because we were fighting each other for them. Guess its an improvement that we were fighting for them to begin with.

The zone D has been a rebound killer.

How many offensive rebounds did the Illini have? 20?

The big guys are always out of place because they are chasing shots on the perimeter.

OSU was a rollercoaster team tonight; up and down all over the place. Being up by 15 and squandering that lead is just a lapse in concentration.

Agree with everything you said here, but they have to find a way to get in position and get those rebounds...

I was able to watch some hightlights on the Big10 network from tonights game and some things about our zone continue to stand out. The baseline is always open for the other teams cutters. It seems that our bigs arent sure which way the rotations should go and someone is always left open. Also it looks as if there is only one rotation and the rest kind of stand still. When the zone rotates the entire defense must rotate to keep the integrity of the zone. Thats when we are losing those rebounds, we're one guy short on the rotation and theres an opponent wide open usually on the baseline or the elbow area for a longer rebound and possible putback. I'd rather see the guards rotating down and leave some 3's open than those baseline looks teams are getting on us. If other teams start draining all of those 3's then move out of it but until people consistently do that against us I'd rather sag a bit and stop the second and third chance buckets.

Lighty leads Buckeyes
to victory over Illini
Ohio State 64, Illinois 58 ? David Lighty scored 16 points and had a crucial rebound and two free throws with 30 seconds left to help Ohio State avoid a late collapse in a victory over visiting Illinois on Tuesday night.
The Buckeyes (13-6, 4-2 Big Ten), who ended a three-game losing skid, led 55-40 with 6:26 left and seemed in control of the game before the Illini roared back to make things uncomfortable in the final minutes.
Illinois (9-11, 1-6) cut the lead to 61-58 on Brian Randle's rebound with 33 seconds left. The Illini then fouled Ohio State center Kosta Koufos on the inbounds play, but he missed both shots.

BIG TEN OHIO STATE 64ILLINOIS 58
Bucks hold line in beating Illini

Wednesday, January 23, 2008Doug Lesmerises
Plain Dealer Reporter
Columbus -- "Aggressive patience" was what Thad Matta called it, the ability to "be going 100 miles an hour, but you've got to be thinking at 50 miles per hour."
Ohio State's coach was using the borrowed phrase to define the breakout game of freshman Evan Turner on Saturday, but he wanted the same from sophomore David Lighty.
Turner and Lighty are the Buckeyes most suited to the way Matta wants to play, two wingmen who can defend, rebound, penetrate and shoot, players tall enough to battle and quick to harass.

COLUMBUS David Lighty looked around and liked his chances. What he did ended up saving the game for faltering Ohio State.

Lighty scored 16 points and had a critical rebound and two free throws with 30 seconds left to help Ohio State avoid a late collapse in a 64-58 victory over Illinois on Tuesday night.

?That was a great, great, great play by David,? Buckeyes coach Thad Matta said. ?It took a little pressure off of us when he made the free throws, knowing it was a two-possession game.?

The Buckeyes (13-6, 4-2 Big Ten), who ended a three-game losing skid, led 55-40 with 6:26 left and seemed in control of the game before the Illini roared back to make things uncomfortable in the final minutes.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

RENEE SAUER | DISPATCH
Ohio State's David Lighty fights for possession against Illinois. A jump ball was called on the play.

With all the Ohio State men's basketball team had been through, coach Thad Matta said it felt like a year since the Buckeyes and Illinois played three weeks ago. Their rematch last night showed how far the young Buckeyes have come since then. How far they still have to go, also.
Almost completely reliant on point guard Jamar Butler in their win at Illinois on Jan. 3, the Buckeyes counted on other options in a 64-58 victory over the Fighting Illini in Value City Arena.

I am not a bball guru by any means... so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

A couple of things stood out to me as others mentioned..

Rebounding.. the stats don't look too bad, but it is the number of Offensive rebounds and 2nd and third changes Illinois got that is discouraging.

KK - Seems soft and timid to me.....

I love Turners game and if he keeps it going he is going to be a great number 2 scorer which will make this team deadly come big ten tournament time and hopefully NCAA's.

We need to get some big bodies in there to get some minutes, I have not seen them play a lot this year but could Dallas be that big man we need to get some of these boards?
