Game Thread Ohio State 6, Penn State 13 (Oct. 25)

How exactly am I a year late?
We swap are starting qb for a freshman qb after the first game and you expect this not to be a year typical of rebuilding and getting ready for the future?

Maybe now, but preseason expectations? Being modest I expected 13-0. Talent, experience, the schedule to do it. It's a damn shame, but we'll get there, and I have a feeling it will be with #2 at the QB helm.

How exactly do you rebuild for the future with 22 freaking returning starters? Throw all the seniors under the bus?

There were high expectations (and rightfully so) coming into this season. There are ALWAYS high expectations at Ohio State when it comes to football.

Just speaking for myself, this is the most frustrating season I can remember. The Bucks came into this season with a lot of star players coming back from a great 12-1 season. Fair or not, they have underperformed. Hopefully they will run the table, beating scUM in the process and play on New Years Day, probably in Florida vs an SEC team.

The Bad:
- The play calling of Coach JT is way too conservative. We will never win big games if we arent willing to take risks. He needs to give up the Play calling to some one younger and more willing to take risks. The offense was too predictable. Think if our offensive play calling was as aggressive as our defensive play calling tonight we would have surely won.
- The OL was subpar the entire game. We need to fix that this offseason by recruiting OL because the games are won in the Trenches.

Based on your take here do you think that maybe the conservative play calling has something to do with having a subpar offensive line?

Remember the comparisons to Florida's Tebow/Leak QB attack? It wasn't because we're in a rebuilding year. We were picked by many non-OSU fans to win the title.

Next year is the rebuilding year IMO. Not as much as a rebuilding year as it was originally planned, considering TP will have nearly a year of experience under his belt, and some huge games.

EDIT: I actually didn't mind the playcalling. We were nearly in position to be putting more points on the board while we already had the lead. Costly turnover caused us to have to get away from the gameplan. We relied on our defense tonight. It deserved to be relied upon. PSU's defense came to play the run tonight, and they played it well.

Just a few thoughts....

1. We threw a bunch on first down tonight....it didn't work. Once we got 2nd and long, we turned very predictable. I'd venture to say we had 2nd and 8 or longer a majority of our second downs.

2. I will never question JT and his staff, but his timeout on 2 and 1 with 3:50 left in the game was Romeo Crennelesque. It cost us 40 seconds at the end of the game. You don't take that timeout with that much time on the gameclock, b/c you have to assume they are going to pick up 1 yard. It was a very badly wasted timeout.

3. The offensive line disappointed again tonight. I feel for Beanie b/c he looked pedestrian on a national stage. Think about how many times we have ever seen Beanie pedestrian.... Was this DL of PSU better than LSU last year? It's a good DL, no doubt, but our OL is swiss cheese this year.

4. Hindsight is 20/20 but I would have loved more read-option tonight. It felt like we were so focused on breaking tendencies that we went away from our bread and butter. Not utilizing the read-option, also hurt our play action possibilities. It just felt like Terrelle was put in a very difficult situation tonight.

5. Last thought....Terrelle didn't play great, but to say he let us down as some douchebag stated is absurd. If you can't see what he has brought to this team, you are clueless. Imagine an immobile QB behind this O-line. We're lucky to be in these games, let alone winning most of them. Not a knock on Todd, a knock on the o-line.

and to follow up, Terrelle never should have had to QB sneak it in the first place. Beanie had EASILY picked up the first down. We had several no-calls go our way as well so I'm not going to complain, but the play everyone will remember about this game, should never have happened.

My take on the game and OSU/Tressel

1) Stop Beanie and you make OSU throw the ball to beat you.
2) Penn State did just that and won the game.
3) OSU Defense did a great job tonight.
4) Our offensive line, average at best
5) Our offensive is just that, offensive

I am totally not sold on having our Freshman QB taking over the team. Does he give us the best option? Really? Yes he has some attributes with his legs, but when you look at the total picture, we are now a one dementional offense. I don't see the arm strength, I don't see the accuracy. What I see is what I saw in his H.S films. Throwing the ball up or lofting the ball to his receivers. This is not H.S football. He has trouble following progressions. He is young and he will be a good one in a few years

Taking one of the leaders of the team, and captain completely out of the offense, has been a big mistake. He has arm strength, he at least can read a Defense, and throw the ball down field. His interceptions this year where costly, but to yank him completely out the system is a huge coaching blunder. Our offense has spuddered since our young QB has been in there. He is our Future, but we are now sacrificing any offense we have to get him up to speed.

Tonights offensive play calling was almost Cincinnati Bengal like. It was very Predictable. It was obvious that we should be thowing the ball on first down, and or throw the ball down field to loosen up the Penn State's defense. We did neither. Was it the lack of confidence that we have in our system?

Coach T has really shown some bad jugdement, time management, and offensive schemes since the BSC bowl last year. The Zone blocking on the O line is not working. If your going to change the QB then lets change everything to accomodate what he does best. You can't just change one without the other unless the QB's are similar.....Very frustrated this year with Coach T , and OSU inability to make adjustments and get on track. The Big Ten is just that, the Big Ten. Smash mouth football has passed us by, while other leagues and teams have innovated schemes and quick athletes.

Great job Defense..You guys played a heck of a game:biggrin:
