Game Thread Ohio State 6, Penn State 13 (Oct. 25)

What I saw was two evenly matched teams, the Buckeyes committed some silly penalties and made a key mistake that cost them the game. You can blame the O-line or whoever, but it's football, things happen. Not to mention, PSU is ranked #3 in the country and have had a great year. If you look at what they have been doing to teams, the fact that we could have won that game says something for the talent on this team. Pryor is young, but he's getting better every game, and I saw the way he looked afterwards, no one took this loss harder than him. We still have a good look at the Rose Bowl if we win out, and we can't win em all. I know people would like to, but the reality is that teams around us are improving too, and this year someone got us.

We have a very bright future, and we still have some games to win. I want revenge on Illinois for last year and I want to just kick the living crap out of tsun, if for no other reason than it will be fun to watch and provide entertainment for the off season from the scout/rival message boards.

For now, I give you this gem from the scout scum board.

all I know is if RR can develope these kids and the kids coming in next year, it will be very fun to watach.

UM is a sleeping GIANT.
Night all.

Are they excited for hanging with the same michigan state team that we blew out 45-7 in their house. While Michigan got to play MSU in the PETITE house.. Get real, we'll drop 45+ on your ass!

You really gotta give it up to the seniors, especially Malcom and James. They played a great game tonight running on pure emotion. They wanted this win more than anything. I really want them to succeed at the next level, and make billions. That is not a typo.

Overall though this loss was very disappointing. This was my first game I've gone to in over 3 years, so I was hoping to be a good luck charm. No worries, I now know that my presence does not help 1 iota. Plus I lost my voice and I felt like i was pissing off some old people the entire time with my constant "OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!" especially on defense. The kicker is, I feel a cold coming on. Meh kharma...

Our D played amazing. The line got penetratin and overall I could not be more pleased with their progression. As for the seconday... I can always breath a sigh of relief when they drop back to pass (except when that douche clark takes off for a first down). Our O seems to be digressing. The line could not move anyone off the ball. ------> Our run game was atrocious. I think the one shining aspect of our O was Dane Sanzenbacher. I think he had 6 receptions for 80 some yards. Also I still feel like we are struggling to fit Saine in our O. I know this has been said before, but today I felt it was more apparent. Our play calling is extremely predictable. I dont know if many of you noticed PSUs safety ligned up as a lineback in our run package EVERY TIME. I have no idea why this wasn't exploited. Also we did run nickle on the final PSU drive for the FG, I have no idea why it was kind of obvious they were going to run. Also, special teams....... I think Smalls is a great return man, but he scared me tonight...... twice! Also I cant wait to see Herron back. I saw him in for one play and I was honestly excited, but then he blocked and was taken out.

/rant off

I'm not the coach. When it comes down to it he knows a shit load more than I. I will always support Tressel not because of what he's done, but for what he represents. He's a great coach, and an even better person.

There is still hope for a Co-Big Ten Champions, but I wanna see State go to the championship game and hand the opponent a good old fashion big ten but wooping. Then maybe, just maybe Joe Pa would retire..... Ok I'm kidding if that happens he coaches until he crokes.

I love Ohio State Football and I will never stop cheering for my scarlet and grey. Go Bucks!!!!

This loss is just killing me right now. IMO we had the game in our hands and with one mistake(fumble) it was all taken away from us. I'm not going to blame Pryor, he is a freshman and mistakes are expected. Right now this loss just hurts so much because we were so close to pulling out a victory even when our offense was just terrible. I feel really bad for the defense. Once again the defense fought and kept us in the game all night only to have the offense do absolutely nothing. Offensive line= nonexistent. Playcalling is just as bad as the O-line. I've never been one of those fans that's been screaming for an offensive cordinator to be hired but now I am. I think a new Offensive cordinator would help Tressel to focus more on head coaching duties instead of splitting up his time with game planning, play calling, etc. I'm not going to be able to get over this game for awhile.........this sucks.

Crowd showed up in a big way tonight (finally). The scarlet fever actually looked pretty good, I wish we'd wear scarlet all of the time, instead of the checkerboard of white/grey, but I digress.

you can't put the blame on Pryor
what about the two pass interference calls
what about the muffed kick off return after Penn State scored

And in response to previous comments of people responding to me.
yes when you return 22 starters and lose again prime time on the national stage The Season is indeed over. I am a big loyal Ohio State fan but you can't be blind to the obvious. Again I look forward to next season. I think we have a great chance to make a run at the NC.
you can say whatever you want about the media but right now we have the reputation of choking in the big game whether you like it or not.

However I am curious to see what Bowl game we will play in.
I have a feeling that it will be a rematch against LSU since they took their 2nd loss today also.

I also question Tressel's play calling. He is an original old school type coach and I respect that but unfortunately with the flawed BCS system you gotta play to run up the score and not settle and be happy with the lead you have. Look at the scores the past 2 weeks. Florida putting up 50+ USC = nuff said. I dont like the BCS but that what you gotta do today.

First off, as others have touched on: this loss was not like any of the other "major" losses that tOSU has endured the last 2 years. It was simply a battle. One that fans of most teams across the nation have to deal with on a lot more consistent basis then Ohio St. fans. We simply haven't lost often, but reality is...losses happen. Don't know how else to put it...I think most OSU fans get it (at least on this board). It was a good college football game.

Second- ugh...I can't believe we lost to them. Penn St....second most hated team in our conference...at home...at night. Man, that just sucks. Especially in that situation. We were in control...then bam! Ugh...Penn State?...fuck Penn st. Such a sad night. :(

....but I would like them to continue their run.

Just a roller-coaster of emotions...still. Tough break. Felt bad for the kids (as always when they lose). They really tried hard. And they were in a position to win. Maybe they were put in the best situation to succeed...maybe not. I don't know. I'm not too good at breaking down football, and this game will be analyzed and over-analyzed for the next week+ (bye week). I'd say, overall things still need to be changed...but how much can change this late in the year? I don't like the lack of consistency, not just from week to week, but from series to series and even play to play. Still proud of the Buckeyes...both fans and players tonight.

Go Bucks!

The Good

- Great game. I love watching two very sound teams go after it and knock each other around for 4 quarters. Fun game to watch
- L. Thomas is helping our return game already. Great to see
- D-Line... NICE Job
- Alex Boone played a great game as did most of the oline
- The fans.. It was LOUD
- Great Dane had a good ball game
- The D in general.. Minus Hines out of position a couple of times.. Great effort on the WR's tonight!

The Bad
-
TP's fumble - Cost the team the game. It is a team game but I can't sugar coat it. We have momentum. Their D was getting tired. They win if he gets the first. BTW, Beanie had the first on 2nd down IMO.
- With 6 minutes left and we have to punt Trap has his worst punt of the night and PSU get the ball near midfield
-Clock Management.. Before the half and when driving near the end
- 1 Penalty on PSU....Not the reason we lost, but that is impossible to do for 4 quarters

Great hard fought game that came down to a key turnover... Seems like many OSU / PSU games before, this time we made the turnover and PSU capitalized.

From what i saw Tp actually threw the ball very well, and i thought at times he had alot of time to throw. Lamarr Thomas clearly made a difference in the return game. I thought Tp's two minute offense was beautiful and very efficent. Yeah he fumbled but how many chances did we have to recover the fumble. how big was it when mo wells dropped the kick-off and it rolled out at the 10. The two pass interference calls, or larrimore's facemask at the end of the game. we had plenty chances on winning the game. Thaddeius Gibson i thought had a huge game he was everywhere. And im from ohio and i watched brandon saine play, he has 1 of the fastest 100m times in ohio history and reall saw him make 1 catch last night. Very frustrating....

What a linear train of thought. If our offensive line plays good. And their defensive line plays great we are going to end up looking poor statistically. Their game plan coming in was to stop the run. Everything they did was predicated upon it. Our O line cannot possibly affect what happens after Beanie has run through a hole, and I saw him get hit consistently right after making it through a hole by the second line.

Take off your scarlet glasses and watch the game again. The offensive line was manhandled on running plays. The idea is to defeat your man at the point of attack and get to the secondary level (linebackers) if possible. Our O-line was being stood up at the LOS and the Penn State players were coming OFF THE BLOCK to make the tackle. There were no "holes" to run through all night long.

I'll give you that pass protection was adequate.

Thanks for bringing up the pass interference penalties. I counted three plays last night (including the two pass interferences) where the Ohio State DBs had EASY interceptions if they'd looked back for the ball when the receiver looked back.

I saw a fire and intensity in this game I hadn't seen since the 2006 scUM game. The electricity was jumping through the screen. This was one of those games that was going to be won by a big play or a mistake either way. This time, the ball bounced to PSU. I seem to recall a couple of games against them where it bounced our way. 3 more victories and a bowl win!

I really wanted to see us be the only team to win 3 straight outright Big-10 titles. What a bummer.

Now we know why it'd never been done before. It's hard to keep a team hungry for that long.

The Bright side (yes there is one)

1) We will still get a BCS game if we win out and USC wins out...

Was this a typo? We actually need PSU to win out for us to make it to a BCS bowl.

If they win out and we win out, the Rose Bowl would select us to replace Penn State.

PSU will certainly not lose more than one game. If they do lose one game, even though we would be co-bigten champs, the Rose Bowl would have their big ten rep and no one else will take us this year.

10 slots
6 BCS conference champs
1 notre dame
1 non-bcs conf. team
2 at large

With only 2 at large bids this year (probably), if the Rose Bowl is already full, everyone else will pick either an SEC or Big 12 team IMO.
