In terms of size and financial support, Ohio State and Northwestern operate in vastly different environments

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
Northwestern is in Ohio State's league, and yet it isn't.
Both compete in the Big Ten, but that's about the only similarity between the schools whose football teams will meet today in Ohio Stadium.
Ohio State is a behemoth, a public university with nearly 50,000 students and an athletic department to match. The Buckeyes support 36 teams, enjoy a 102,329-seat football stadium, are financially self-sufficient and appear at times to be printing their own money.
Northwestern is the Big Ten's oddball. It is the conference's only private school, with an enrollment of 7,800 (the next smallest school is Iowa at about 30,000).

When Northwestern takes the field in Ohio Stadium today, the Wildcats will be heavy underdogs.
So what else is new? The Buckeyes lead the all-time series 57-14-1.
Not surprisingly, an alumni game between the two schools would be lopsided, as well.
Ohio State could run Archie Griffin and Eddie George up the middle behind Orlando Pace, Jim Lachey and John Hicks, or have Art Schlichter throw to Cris Carter, Terry Glenn and Joey Galloway.
Northwestern could counter with accomplished signal-caller Otto Graham, but after that, it falls off quickly. Steve Tasker? D'Wayne Bates? Mike Adamle?

'Shoe, fans set for the big 5-0-0
COLUMBUS (AP) -- The old gray stadium on the banks of the Olentangy River has seen its share of legends and ghosts, memorable moments and unforgettable games. Today, Ohio Stadium -- home of the Snow Bowl, where Woody and Archie and the rest weaved their magic -- hosts its 500th game when Northwestern (2-1) ventures in to play No. 8 Ohio State (3-0).
"It shows you how small you really are in such a big program and in such a historical, traditional stadium," said Ohio State assistant coach John Peterson, who also was an offensive lineman for four years in the stadium. "You're getting a chance to play a game in it. That's a pretty neat thing."

Ohio Stadium just right: Northwestern visits for 500th game in The Shoe
By MATT MARKEY

COLUMBUS - When the Ohio State Buckeyes face Northwestern here this afternoon, it will be the 500th game played in Ohio Stadium, the venerable old "Horseshoe" where about 25,000 fans watched the Buckeyes beat Ohio Wesleyan 5-0 back in 1922, in the massive structure's baptismal contest.
Those 85 years ago, many first thought the place was too big. But when Ohio State drew a crowd of more than 72,000 for the Michigan game that season, those concerns were permanently shelved.

OSU notebook: Buckeyes raise a red flag over yellow flags

Ohio State and Northwestern head into a Big Ten season opener today hoping not to hit double digits for the second straight week. That's in penalties, mind you, not points.
OSU was penalized a season-high 10 times in a 33-14 win a week ago at Washington. Northwestern was penalized 13 times in a 20-14 loss to Duke.
Although the Buckeyes are 3-0, fullback Dionte Johnson said the penalty sheet shows they have room to improve. For example, after a false start on a fourth-and-1 at Washington's 1-yard line, the Huskies blocked a field goal attempt and quickly drove for a touchdown and a 7-3 halftime lead.

97.1 does carry the game but only over the airways. Their streaming broadcast blocks the game because... WBNS owns both 1460 and 97.1 (and CBS 10TV, and the Dispatch). 97.1 does not stream the game to "force" listeners to pay for it at 1460.Bleed S & G;936527; said:Not sure, but Keels used to do them on 97.1 too, Mix 97.1 - 80s, 90s, Now - Columbus, Ohio
Woody ball has returned to the 'Shoe

COLUMBUS - In the first three games, tight ends Rory Nicol and Jake Ballard found themselves in unfamiliar positions.
On the field.
The same goes for fullbacks Dionte Johnson and Trever Robinson, who have played more in the first three games this year than they did all of the last two seasons combined.
"I love it," Johnson said. "I've been waiting for this moment for a long time now."
As the Buckeyes prepare to host Northwestern today in Ohio Stadium, Ohio State purists will be relieved to know that Woody ball has returned to Columbus, complete with the bruises and dust clouds that accompany moving the football 3 yards at a time.
