Game Thread Ohio State 33, Washington 14 (Final)

True, but we have yet to give up a touchdown (on defense, or special teams/turnover). Has any other team done that? (LSU if they blank VTech tonight can)
If the drive charts for YSU and Akron are correct on the ESPN summaries, both teams drove their offenses past the 50 only once each game. YSU drove 81 yards for a FG, Akron drove 34 yards for a punt. Our offense has set the other team up on our side of the 50 three times due to TOs.

The only team that can drive and setup for scores on our defense, apparently is our own offense. :tongue2:

Reading some recaps tonight, and realized that PSU also has not allowed an offensive TD. The TD they gave up tonight was on an INT return. LSU's scoreless streak came to an end tonight.

Today Washington averaged 3.3 YPC. 85 of those yard came from their QB who had a 36 yarder. IMO against our defense they will average half of that. The only way we lose this gaem is turnovers.

On offense Washington has young DB's. We need to exploit their inexperince in their secondary.

My prediction is 23-7 Buckeyes.

^ Dryden I agree but IMO Tressel is holding back on the playcalling. IMO we could be running a much more prolific type of offense. I have learned from watching the Buckeyes under coach Tressel that hes trying not to compromise Todd if he doesn't have to...he hasn't had to yet. I also think he wants to get the 2-deep OL some reps in short yardage and goal line situations. I think hes being predictable for several reasons. Most of which has to do with practice. IMO we will see the playbook opened maybe a page or two. Since the secondary is Washingtons weaknes on defense you will probably see more 4 wide and play-action passes...we will see.

It's pretty sad that with blue-chip recruits at RB, and the big horses on the line we're looking to the inexperienced passing game for our offense. However, I agree. The run blocking has been pathetic. Beanie started running with a purpose, but the blocking really didn't improve.

Agreed. Way too much penetration is being allowed between the guards, which is blowing up the inside run plays. The outside plays have worked so far, however, they will not work nearly as well against faster defenses.

They need to take their skirts off and start getting nasty.

Been a while since I have been here, but I think you are right on. Tressel likes the chess game. He will only show what is needed. I think we see an opened up offense this coming weekend.

BUT, the O-line better man up this week.

What do you guys see as the keys to winning this game??

Mine are

1. The defense containing locker and keeping him in the pocket. Force him to throw the ball and we'll be fine. Sure, they did some damage against BSU through the air but we have the best corner in the nation and two of the most active safties. Shut down Locker from running and we'll be in good shape.

2. The offensive line has got to put up 150-200 yards rushing again. We've got to give the QB time to throw because that secondary gave up something like 280 yards passing to BSU!!! BSU if memory serves me is a run first team.

3. The biggest factor for me is we have got to play Boeckman the whole game. No more music chairs at QB, get our starting QB some sort of a rythme. You can't expect a kid who hasn't played an awful lot in the past to just turn it on after you take the kid out and leave him cold for a couple series. Its very unfair to boeckman.

4. Field position game might play the biggest role in this game IMO. We have got to give Washington a long field to play with. Wether that be with punts, or no turnovers. We need to make Washington earn everything they get against us because our defense is so good that going 70-90 yards against them is tough to ask any team to do.

I'm stealing jo's line, but my key to the game is to score more points.

This game is decided in the trenches, and if our O-Line enforces their will, we win. If not, it could be an ugly, sloppy, low scoring game.

I don't know what all Cordle is being asked to do with calling protections at the line, but maybe that needs to be simplified a little bit going to Seattle. Everyone points to Boeckman following-up a Heisman winner, and the WRs replacing 1st round picks, but Cordle, IMO, has just as demanding a task, following the footsteps of Datish and Mangold. As goes Cordle, so goes the team.

It all starts up front.

I will say that we will likely not see a punter as good as Akrons for the rest of the season...at least I hope so. That kid was Akrons player of the game.

We need to play special teams and defense at the same level or better. I think the majority of the cocerns on on offense. The offense cannot turn the ball over more than twice. I hope the have a goose egg in that column this weekend.

My take is that Washington is on the cusps of being a top 25 team. My gut tells me unless we make alot of mistakes we will win. I see our defense shutting them down. The game will be low scoring. 23-7 is my prediction but IMO we get a late score that makes it look alot more comfortable than it really was. I see a score of 9-7 at halftime or something close that. Its gonna be a good game.

Is anyone else....

A little afraid for our upcoming game out in Washington let alone the rest of the season? I mean our offense if we can't start to move the ball, we will be in big trouble. Yeah sure the team reminds me of the '02 Nat'l Champ. team but at least that offense actually put up some numbers, this years O I think is a little different. If our Offensive line doesn't start blocking and making holes more often than two or three times a game for Beanie, Mo, or Saine, we are going to struggle this year and especially the ladder part of the schedule. I know they haven't started to really get deep into the play book, but so far I'm a little afraid for our offense. We have the talent and I know we are very young, but I'm surprised our line can't/isn't doing more. Theres no reason to gripe about the defense. Still love them Buckeyes!!!
