Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

Are you worried about the Battle of Los Angeles being played so early in the season? I mean, UVA won't be a pushover, but is that enough time for the offense to gel for a huge night game like that?

Personally, I think OSU has the talent to play with USC, but for whatever reason they haven't done well in big games lately. On paper, there's no reason the Buckeyes shouldn't have a marked advantage in terms of experience on both sides of the ball. As we all know, however, football isn't played on paper; it's played inside televisions by tiny little men. My vastly premature and likely to change 55 times before the game opinion is that the game is a push.

Yes, thank goodness USC doesn't have any monster linebackers like Ray Maualuga or Brian Cushing. :roll1:

Really, and that is just the tip of the defensive iceberg - if Wells has a big game against 'SC he and the Offensive Line will deserve all the plaudits thrown their way.

Honestly, I love that we're playing early, I think it sets the tone for the season and shows the rest of college football you don't have to play patsies to "beef up" your schedule. I am so nauseated by the oc play that I think this game might do the trick in getting other teams to realize it's in their best interests to play hard teams throughout your schedule.

That's some funny right there! I think you guys have some clear advantages in terms of experience, particularly on offense, but despite that whole "fair weather fan" nonsense that we get, I think you'll find 92,000 screaming banjees to work in USC's favor. (Needless to say, I don't doubt that 20,000 Buckeye screams will also be heard). I've been to some loud games of late and I think you'll find the atmosphere fun.

I do not know if Sanchez will get all giggity giggity in anticipation, though I do like our tune up against UVA. Hopefully, we'll come on strong in Virginia and use that bye week to focus. We usually do okay in that regard, I just hope we don't look ahead past UVA.

If Wells gains 100+ yards he'll immediately be up for strong Heisman consideration (if he isn't already). That's my fear.

SoCal pumps in crowd noise too? :shake:

Or do they literally have noise-makers on their wrists?

I meant 70,000 or so USC fans, versus 20,000 or so Buckeyes. Do you think more will travel than that?
No, I was just poking fun at your fuzzy math of 110. I'd guess 15,000, give or take about 5k.
By the way -

Pretorius?
Laurinaitis?

Are we playing Sparta?

I'm partial to Chimdi Chekwa myself in the best name category. WR (Jake) Stoneburner is pretty good as well.

Over the past several years (last year not included) we Buckeye fans have been treated to a stellar non-conference game which really helped set the tone for the year. This obviously ranks right up there with the Texas games although just slightly different in that the Bucks and Trojans have a shared history of games and the Bucks and UT had never played. In any event, one of the things that made last year so difficult was that it was difficult to gauge the season because Buckeye fans knew they wouldn't play a team with a heartbeat until later in the season. This year, we don't have that worry as we get a premier team right out of the gate. We all get fired up for football every year, but knowing this game is on the schedule early, helps me get fired up now. I'm so thankful that both programs seek out these types of games and make them possible.

There are several matchups in this particular game that should be of interest. Folks have already touched on the Buckeye run game against the quality LBs of USC. I think the opposite is also of interest as we know that USC has loads of RB talent (perhaps a bit green, but huge talent nonetheless) and the Bucks return a ton of LB talent as well.

How will tOSUs interior line hold up and will they make a push to rattle young but talented USC QBs? How will Ron Johnson and Brod Green play (interesting to me mostly because we wanted those two and recruited them). Anyway, a great early season game.

I think the best name of all time is Dick Trickle, Nascar also-ran. Somehow his name always comes up, though he's never really won much.

Yup. We went after Wells and lost too. I relish watching these guys, really the top players in their respective positions, going head to head. Our RB's are going to have a long day if our O-line doesn't start clicking quickly. I think in our spring game there was something like 16 blown assignments.

Our o-line coach is Pat (Golden) Ruel (his parents must've been hippies), and I have no doubt he'll get these boys ready for action. I wish Chilo Rachal hadn't chosen to go into the draft, though. We needed the experience on the line. We're going to find out if these guys have what it takes pretty early on.

Whoever takes this game has an early inside lead into the NC game, I believe. That is, before LessMiles and UrbanCryer start the Whining Game. Like every year, there are likely going to be a bunch of PO'd fans at the end of the season.

And Ayles, Ausberry, O'Dowd (strange one that recruitment), Sanchez and many others, not even counting the token offers. Should be fun.
