Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

Sanchez, defense lead No. 1 USC to convincing win over No. 5 Ohio St. : Local Colleges : Ventura County Star

"This is the outcome we thought could happen," said USC coach Pete Carroll. "We've been doing this for years."

Arrogance - yes, what else would expect from the elite
Confidence - come on you saw the game
Vision - Pete Carrol must have read Jim Tressels book The Winners Manual

Moving onto Troy, it's important that this team doesn't look back and wins out the rest of the season. Great team, great coaches, great fans - go Bucks.

Saine

I have a question....why hasn't Saine been lined up this yr as a WR. LSU saw what he brings. How do you have the fastest man in OHIO come out on the field over and over to block for the QB???
Saine gets the ball from the LOS for the 1st time and goes for the first down. He gets it again and carries 4 guys for yardage, then he's back to blocking for the QB. Saine's talent and speed are being wasted on this team IMO

No more Tressel ball

If that statement is meant to say, "They shouldn't try to play Tressel ball anymore" then it is wrong.

If it is meant to say, "The don't play Tressel ball anymore" then it is right. Look at what went on out there. They didn't take care of the football, they didn't make good decisions, they didn't control the line of scrimmage, they didn't execute on special teams, with the missed FG, shanked punts and poor return game.

Kinda hard to tell them to stop doing something they haven't really been doing for a while now. I'll leave it to the people who know a little more about such things to tell me whether this is more about execution by the players or preparation by the coaches, but I do know that we haven't seen Tressel ball from this team in a while now.

I think the talent is there - despite maybe some unfavorable comparisons to the units on the 2002 squad. People forget that the O-line was maligned then too - and even a good number of those guys are drawing NFL paychecks to this day. Obviously it's a little early to tell, but what are we gonna say if the leaders of this O-line go on to have similar careers?

College football is, more or less, about recruiting, imo. Lets face it, USC has had the best avg. recruiting class 6-7 years running. Only Florida comes near. What did we expect? If anything, they have underachieved the last 3 years! Its still a long season. We can, and I dare say, we will, recover, probably win the Big10...and get our redemption in a good quality bowl game as a much different and more determined, experienced team. My ONLY concern is that we keep the recruits that we have on board and successfully get the the 2-4 more that we need for '09...and continue the momentum for '10!!

The only thing that I marvel about from this game...is the incredible depth of this USC team, and the platoon system that seems to work w/everyone seemingly happy about it. That, imo, is the genius of Pete Carroll. The sales job that he does in spite of the depth chart. Amazing! But, the season aint over, for them or for us. Lets go!!

JT has a way of doing things we like..honor,family, etc. PC,RR,UM,LM run their programs differently. They are like cutthroatts CEO's(read Justin Boren's comments on RR and the tOsu program). i BELIEVE those coaches would have started Tp from day one. Without any consideration for Todd, Posey and Flash would have been on the field too....loyalyty tradition means little to them its all about winning..even if it means looking pass boosters lining Reggie Bush's pockets so be it. TS would not have sat out that many games at those university's. JT has standards that go beyond winning and I like that..that being said 35-3 is hard to swallow.

Help me understand, are you saying that we shouldn't put the best players and team on the field that would help us win because a Senior deserves to play for all the time they have put in?

I'm all for kids working their way into the starting lineup and proving themselves worthy to be the starter as opposed to being handed the spot because they are highly touted/recruited over the incumbent player.

In any sport I have played or coached, the best players play regardless of seniority status period.

September is for pretenders. and we were exposed as pretenders.

oh, and when asked about national perception, Tressel also said, "Taking a lot of heat from whom? I guess I?m only concerned with Ohio State fans."

well, this is one Ohio State fan who's less than pleased with the product.

What do you expect him to say after having his hat handed to him following a serious ass kicking... his third one in three years by an OOC opponent? He's a stand up guy who never blames the kids and never does a John L. Smith on his assistants either.

I would think Tressel's first area of concern would be up front, especially the offensive line and the person he's going to have to look at first is Bollman, the product of my ire in those three years between MoC and the emergence of Pittman and now Beanie.

As for myself, I can't hold a drop back passer at fault if he's playing behind a line that can't hold out the other guy's DLs and with backs who can't pick up blitzers. So if I were Tressel (and there are many reasons why I'm not) I'd have to concede that I can't continue to play a drop back passer if the line can't hold. Then I'd have to evaluate the talent I'm pulling in up front and ponder how my recruiting of linemen is going.

From my limited viewpoint I'd have to say we lost all three NC games (and last night was an NC playoff) up front. Inability to protect the passer or open holes for the runners and an inability to put pressure on the other guys passer or stop his runners.

I feel are defensive and offensive schemes are a little outdated. Dantonio and Snyder are not here anymore to run the schemes they put on this defense. I hate to say this but I believe scUM took the right approach to attacking teams like Florida who has talent and speed like I still believe we do. The defense has to be aggressive in these big games. The offensive line also seems to not be the unit that we thought it would be. I have a lot of respect for Pete Carroll and the way USC plays. Actually hope they win it all. Even if we win by 100 every game we know we won't be back. I just hope maybe next year we do something in the lines of Cooper bringing in Walt Harris and provide a spark for these talented kids that we have because I have to admit, my love will always be there but me saying we can play with anybody, well that faith isn't there anymore.:(

I slept on it as well and to be honest like the other posters said. Nothing has differed either with me. The intensity, desire, and relentlessness isn't there what so ever. To me this team is as talented as they come but the coaching staff is doing a poor job of getting these kids ready for a game. Right now I think even if the coaches were to perfectly gameplan for a USC type team that our team wouldn't succeed because their confidence is now SHOT. They lost the game before it even started yesterday and I won't lie I saw this coming. I knew with how USC plays that game and how they get after it that we could be in a world of hurt if we don't match their intensity.

The coaching staff does need a total make over though. The only time this offense has truely been good has been when we had a heisman trophy winning QB and talent all over the field. Pittman, Wells, Ginn, Gonzo, Holmes, Hall, and others. Defensively, why do we sit back and wait for them to come to us? We always let the other offense dictate how they want to play the game. I'm not saying to blitz (because we did last night and got stuffed) but the overall types of blitzing and packages is very recognizeabe. Which bring me to my next point.

I'm sick and tired of teams saying "They will do exactly what they do on film" or "Nothing changed they were as expected". Well gosh since teams gameplan so well for us no wonder they think we're slower than usual etc. They get to point A before our players do and shut it down before it starts. I'm not asking for a total overhaul either but I am asking to mix things up better and add some new fresh sets that they don't have tap on us executing. SOMETHING, ANYTHING.

There have been a lot of great posts in this thread without personal attacks on character, etc. This is a great site!

I don't think the refs were going to let us stay in the game in the first half no matter what we did.
Sure, the calls they made on us were technically correct, (except for the phantom false start on Boone) but they always wiped out a positive OSU play, and were ticky-tack compared to the plays which went uncalled against USC.

I know officiating is not an excuse, but even to a more or less objective Brent Musberger, it was pretty obvious who was controlling the game, at least in the first half. INstead of 14-14 or, at worst, 14-10 at halftime, we're not only way behind on the scoreboard, but emotionally frustrated and demoralized. I think that had a lot to do with the second half performance.

Our starting QB has serious issues with his skill set that I don't think are fixable through coaching. Our backup QB lacks only one thing - better field vision which will be obtained through experience.

D-line and O-line are playing tentatively, like BKB ssaid, the disparity in intensity level was obvious. O-line is really playing soft.

I really like Herron.

I really miss Beanie.

Our secondary looks good in man, but bad in zone.

WAY too many blockers getting to the LBs.

The front seven can't shed blockers/holders.

Re: coaching. This same staff designed the dynamic offenses we had in '05 and '06. the creativity is there, but the personnel is not.
A change in personnel would result in a change in scheme.
Personally, I would love to see the option packages we ran in '05 with TP at QB, but he needs a whole lot more experience until he is ready to handle it full-time.
It's also less efficient for the rest of the offense to prepare to run completely different schemes based on the QB personnel, but it's certainly not impossible.

Any word on Rehring? He was out and Browning was at LG, and Shugarts was at LT in the 4th Qtr.

Did anyone notice Curtis Terry when he was in there? He was kicking butt and taking names. Wish it would rub off on some of our other players.

Defense wasn't really too bad - good enough to win, actually. Gave up less than 400 yards and 28 points to a team loaded with great weapons and with great play-calling.

The real issues with this team are on the offensive side of the ball.
It's hard to be patient, especially this year when expectations were high, but we'll have to do it until a certain #2 is really ready. (and # 8 and so on)

Agree for the most part.

However, we gave up 2 easy TDs in man coverage last night....one on a perect throw and better catch/balance act and the other on a textbook pick play.

LBs got swallowed up...I'd love to see Freeman back to WILL and a true wardaddy at SAM.

The DL is getting handled on the interior...stalemates at best usually. That is killing LBs and opening huge lanes.

Alex Boone

Hey did anyone see the Interview with Alex Boone last night he was really frustrated with how many bad mistakes and penalty's committed by the Bucks I think even with Beanie in tOSU still probably would HAVE lost.

I know that i received alot of Rubys for some of my terrible postings when Ohio State Lost to LSU this past Jan. And i had a bit much to drink that night. No excuses there and i deserved it.

Since then, I was anxious to see how we would fair with all the talent coming back for another run at an N/C for 2008. The past 2 games with YSU and OHio left me with some thoughts
about what I saw. The one problem I have with that - is this: Is Ohio State playing with alot of "Intensity" or am I not seeing that part of the game. I saw alot of "Inensity" in the 2006 season and it was very evident in the Michigan game, which seemed to me, that this game was played for all the marbles just like a national championship game would have been played.

Maybe this years teams is over keyed and expecting to much of themselves. Alot of the players made a committment to come back as one SOLID unit and to prove to the rest of us that they were worthy to back up what they wanted to do.

Last nights game was to decide which team was worthy of a run at a BCS championship team. Now how far will Ohio State fall in the rankings ? Who knows. Jim Tressel is kind and soft in his responses to what happened. He is pretty cool about those things. He was the same at YSU also. But somewhere, somehow, alot of people are starting to question the level of play. There is so much talent at Ohio State, that you would think they should have no problems every year defending thier Reign as Big ten champs. Have we become too complacent and just resting on our laurels? One big thing that Ireally see is that the BIGTen is just middle of the road conference and maybe we have to accept that.

But last nights game was hard for me to swallow. I thought we would give them a game but then again like I said before, where was the Intesity?. Am I wrong here ?
