There have been a lot of great posts in this thread without personal attacks on character, etc. This is a great site!
I don't think the refs were going to let us stay in the game in the first half no matter what we did.
Sure, the calls they made on us were technically correct, (except for the phantom false start on Boone) but they always wiped out a positive OSU play, and were ticky-tack compared to the plays which went uncalled against USC.
I know officiating is not an excuse, but even to a more or less objective Brent Musberger, it was pretty obvious who was controlling the game, at least in the first half. INstead of 14-14 or, at worst, 14-10 at halftime, we're not only way behind on the scoreboard, but emotionally frustrated and demoralized. I think that had a lot to do with the second half performance.
Our starting QB has serious issues with his skill set that I don't think are fixable through coaching. Our backup QB lacks only one thing - better field vision which will be obtained through experience.
D-line and O-line are playing tentatively, like BKB ssaid, the disparity in intensity level was obvious. O-line is really playing soft.
I really like Herron.
I really miss Beanie.
Our secondary looks good in man, but bad in zone.
WAY too many blockers getting to the LBs.
The front seven can't shed blockers/holders.
Re: coaching. This same staff designed the dynamic offenses we had in '05 and '06. the creativity is there, but the personnel is not.
A change in personnel would result in a change in scheme.
Personally, I would love to see the option packages we ran in '05 with TP at QB, but he needs a whole lot more experience until he is ready to handle it full-time.
It's also less efficient for the rest of the offense to prepare to run completely different schemes based on the QB personnel, but it's certainly not impossible.
Any word on Rehring? He was out and Browning was at LG, and Shugarts was at LT in the 4th Qtr.
Did anyone notice Curtis Terry when he was in there? He was kicking butt and taking names. Wish it would rub off on some of our other players.
Defense wasn't really too bad - good enough to win, actually. Gave up less than 400 yards and 28 points to a team loaded with great weapons and with great play-calling.
The real issues with this team are on the offensive side of the ball.
It's hard to be patient, especially this year when expectations were high, but we'll have to do it until a certain #2 is really ready. (and # 8 and so on)
