I hate the Register with a passion. What a rag.

What bothers me the most though is that both the Register and the LA time just PUMP OUT the bulletin board material and give enough reason for the rest of the country to think SC and its fans are overconfident going into every single game.
I don't expect local papers to be unbiased but I do expect them to put out some sensible material that covers all aspects of the game, not just so Ra-Ra business that calls Ohio State "slowhio" or predicts a thirty point SC thrashing of the Bucks. Whatever, the Register is garbage. I don't even know why I bother ranting.

This will not be a battle won by the pregame speech, but rather by the mid-game push.

FWIW, Brannagh's Henry V = best ever.

Well, we do have a dropped Ben Hartsock pass in the 'Shoe against Texas to thank for his reluctance to use the tight end in big situations. Great player, Hartsock was. But I still wake up sweating sometimes with that image going through my mind.

Ryan Hamby dropped the pass against Texas. Ben Hartsock was the TE who made the snow angel in the White House lawn when the '02 Bucks went to meet the President after winning the NC.

Bob Hunter commentary: Different coaches, but one message

LOS ANGELES -- Coaches Jim Tressel and Pete Carroll couldn't seem more different, which shouldn't come as a shock. They also couldn't seem any more the embodiment of the states and the programs they represent.
Ohio State's Tressel vs. Southern California's Carroll: corporate vs. casual, understated vs. exuberant, Old Spice vs. Tommy Bahama, rehearsed vs. spontaneous, sweater vest vs. California cool.
The contrast is so striking that the nation's football scientists -- well, sportswriters, anyway -- have tried to dig deep into the coaches' personas to discover how two guys who are so different can be so successful.
When you see some of the parallels, it's easy to see why we might try. Tressel is 55, Carroll 56. They were hired as coaches at their respective schools after the 2000 season. Since then, USC is tied with Boise State for the second-best record in college football, behind Texas. Ohio State is fourth. Carroll is 77-14, Tressel 75-16. Tressel has won one national title, Carroll two.

On the edge

When Buckeyes run

EDGE: USC

With Chris "Beanie" Wells not playing, Ohio State's biggest offensive threat won't be at full strength. Dan Herron, Brandon Saine and Maurice Wells do different things well, but the Buckeyes needed Beanie in order to dent a defense that ranked fourth nationally last year against the run, giving up 84.2 yards a game and just 2.5 yards a carry.
When Buckeyes pass

EDGE: USC

Ohio State has struggled this season with timing and protection. QB Todd Boeckman has completed 66.7 percent of his passes, though, with two touchdowns and no interceptions. The Trojans gave up only nine TD passes last season, but they lost a lot of their pass rush. OSU's receivers will have to beat man-to-man coverage.

5 key factors

Saturday, September 13, 2008 3:22 AM
By Ken Gordon

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
http://www.dispatch.com/gameday

1. Be aggressive on defense

Southern California has serious firepower, but Ohio State must not give the Trojans too much respect. When the Buckeyes began blitzing more often in the second half against Ohio last week, the results were dramatic. Cornerbacks Malcolm Jenkins and Donald Washington hold up well in man-to-man coverage, making it safer to bring pressure.
2. Protect the passer

OSU quarterback Todd Boeckman has been sacked four times and hit a lot more than that against two relatively weak opponents. Help him out by calling some screen passes and give him a dump-off option. USC quarterback Mark Sanchez has four career starts, and in the one game he faced significant pressure (vs. Arizona last season), he was sacked three times and put up mediocre passing numbers (19 of 31, 130 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions).

Storied series vs. USC began in 1937

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Night game. Check. In the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Check. Against nationally ranked Southern California. Check. The Trojans blank the Buckeyes. Check back.
That was 1959, not this week's nationally televised tilt in the Coliseum.
Before Beanie, Boom and Boeckman -- even before Rex, Archie and Art -- Ohio State and USC shared a somewhat storied history.
There is a tendency among many OSU fans to trace the Big Ten vs. Pacific-10 rivalry to the 1969 Rose Bowl, which the Buckeyes won 27-16 for their fourth national title.
But a closer look turns up a series beyond the past four decades. It began in 1937, with the Buckeyes traveling to Los Angeles and losing 13-12, and it played out 12 more times before the '68 season.

Recruiting watch: Buckeyes, Trojans attract the best

Matt Barkley of Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif., has committed to Southern California. Rivals.com rates him the nation's top quarterback.

In the world of college football recruiting, when Jim Tressel and Pete Carroll talk, people listen.

Tressel's Ohio State Buckeyes and Carroll's Southern California Trojans compete not only on the field tonight but year-round for the nation's top high school talent.
"Certainly they are two of the giants," said Allen Wallace, national recruiting editor of Scout.com. "Wherever you are in the United States -- north, south, east or west -- if Ohio State is after you, you're happy and pay attention, and the same can be said for USC."
That shouldn't be a surprise, considering the two teams have appeared in five of the past six national championship games.
What might be surprising is how similar the schools are in recruiting philosophy.

Play of the week: sprint right H drag Z post

TODD BAYHA | DISPATCH

Southern California likes to play mental games with opposing defenses after first hitting them in the mouth. So it is with this play -- we'll call it "sprint right H drag Z post," which went for a touchdown in the Trojans' 52-7 win over Virginia in their season opener Aug. 30. It probably will pop up in some form tonight against Ohio State.
Trojans quarterback Mark Sanchez is a first-year starter, but he operated at Virginia like a seasoned veteran, which helped on this play in particular. After faking a handoff to the lone running back, he sprinted right, only to be cut off by a crashing Virginia defender.
Sanchez stopped, stepped left and hit the sprinting Ron Johnson in stride on a post route deep downfield to complete a 49-yard touchdown play.

In the spotlight: James Laurinaitis, Rey Maualuga

JAMES LAURINAITIS

LB OHIO STATE

Sure, the winner of tonight's game between Ohio State and Southern California could enjoy the status of front-runner for a spot in the national championship game. But the matchup also could serve as a showcase to determine the top middle linebacker in the country.
In the Scarlet-and-Gray corner, there's James Laurinaitis, winner of the 2007 Butkus Award. Rey Maualuga, he of the big hits and All-America teams, would represent the Cardinal and Gold. And 90,000-plus fans in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum could give it a gladiators quality, like ancient Rome.
"I'm sure people will compare but this game isn't about Rey and I," Laurinaitis said. "It's about two great schools. Regardless of how either of us play, there is a body of work that supports each of us being a good player."

USC perfect fit for Pete's sake
Carroll's arrival revitalized his coaching career as well as the Trojans' fading football fortunes

Pete Carroll led USC to a win the 2004 Rose Bowl, assuring the Trojans of the top spot in that year's final Associated Press poll.

LOS ANGELES -- Pete Carroll's epiphany came at a stock brokerage.
Fired from NFL coaching jobs with the New York Jets and New England Patriots, Carroll was out of coaching in 2000. He had been working with a friend in the NFL on trying to start a football television network. But without the NFL's cooperation -- the NFL Network was years away -- it was a dead end.
One day he went to Bear Stearns in New York City to visit friend and former Jets player Pat Kelly.
"As soon as the door opened, I could hear and feel the energy of the room," Carroll said Wednesday. "Everybody's working and going crazy and buying and selling." And I went, 'Wow, I've got to get back to doing something.' "
Until that moment, Carroll had thought of himself as reasonably content. He was still getting paid by the Patriots. But the frenetic buzz at Bear Stearns jolted him.
