Game Thread Ohio State 3, Southern Cal 35 (Sept. 13)

tOSU needs to keep 3rd down manageable 6yds or less...and the WR's need to run good routes..twice against OU we completed short passes on 3rd and 5 short of the first down..IF Todd and the rec. can manage 3rd down it will be big. 3rd and long puts too much pressure on the OL especially with a less mobile QB. Conversely on defense slow down the run ..tackle well ..SC's WR are unproven I hope our corners are allowed to play up on them not give a cushion allowing Sanchez to throw short before we can pressure him. This what I live for a prime time game against a consensus #1,what could be more exciting...WE CAN WIN THIS GAME..there is only about 5 or 6 other teams that can say that..for all the nay-sayers..tOSU is an elite program (players, coaches ,band, tradition and fans) the world just has to deal with it!!

In my opinion, 99% of the skepticism toward OSU, and a large portion of the skepticism toward the BigTen, comes down to one thing: 1/8/07. Every subsequent poor game is magnified, and every subsequent win is viewed with a bit of skepticism, because of that absolute meltdown when everyone was watching, and when nearly everyone expected the Buckeyes to win, if not steamroll. It's going to take some big wins and some time to overcome what that game meant in a lot of people's minds.
OSU's performance doesn't stand alone, though. It was compounded by Michigan (who many wanted back in the title game for the rematch) getting rolled by USC.

Big Ten teams not named Ohio State have been getting torched in the high profile BCS bowls this decade (Illinois vs LSU '01, Iowa vs USC '02, Michigan vs USC '03, Michigan vs Texas '04, Michigan vs USC '06, Illinois vs USC '07). The only Big Ten team other than Ohio State to win a BCS bowl in this time was PSU in the highly unwatchable Penn St over Florida St snoozer in 2005.

Unless Big Ten teams start winning these showcase matchups, the national perception won't change anytime soon, regardless how well the Big Ten has performed in all the other lower tier bowls in that span.

No, it doesn't stand alone, but it is somewhat unique due to a combination of two factors: 1) edited: the severity of the differential between what was widely expected to happen, and what did happen, and 2) OSU was, obviously, in the only game they could possibly have wanted to be in. Certainly other games have contributed to the perception of the BigTen, but what I said was that one game contributed 99% to the perception of OSU, and a large portion of the perception of the BigTen. While it's certainly not the sole factor in the perception of the BigTen, it contributed significantly more than any of those other games individually, in my opinion.

Spotlights on quarterbacks in Ohio State-USC showdown

Under The Microscope

Southern California quarterback Mark Sanchez is coming off the best game of his young career. Ohio State quarterback Todd Boeckman is coming off one of his worst games in a career that has seemingly lasted forever.
So which team has the edge going into Saturday night's showdown between No. 1 USC and No. 5 Ohio State at the Coliseum (ABC, 8 p.m. ET)?

Todd Boeckman is 13-2 as a starter for Ohio State.

"We'll have to play better than we did this game, that's for sure," Buckeyes coach Jim Tressel said after his team narrowly escaped with a 26-14 win over Ohio on Saturday. "I think everyone knows [USC] is a great football team, but the key to the game for us will be us."
The key for the Buckeyes might be Boeckman, especially if All-American running back Chris "Beanie" Wells remains sidelined with a right toe injury. Wells, who ran for 1,609 yards last season, didn't play against Ohio after injuring his toe in a 43-0 win over FCS opponent Youngstown State on Aug. 30.
Wells is expected to return against the Trojans, but his status remained largely uncertain as the Buckeyes began preparations for USC.

Should USC's defense be on Pryor notice?
September 8, 2008 10:23 PM

LOS ANGELES -- USC defense end Everson Griffen has a confession to make.
Yes, he prefers an opposing quarterback to be a big, lumbering pocket passer rather than an athletic scrambler.

Matthew Emmons/US PRESSWIRE
Freshman quarterback phenom Terrelle Pryor figures to play a role for the Buckeyes against USC.

"With a quarterback who scrambles around, you've just got to work that much harder to get the sack," he said. "Yeah, we like quarterbacks who stay in the pocket because they are right there waiting for you."
Right there waiting to get earholed.
Not so with a running QB.
USC also has a history vs. running QBs.
Washington's Jake Locker gave the Trojans some problems last year. And Oregon's Dennis Dixon beat them while rushing for 76 yards on 17 carries.
Finally, everyone remembers a noteworthy evening a few years back when a certain tall, highly athletic scrambler made USC's defense look discombobulated and, yes, very average.

ESPN doesnt seem to be slamming us for the game as much as i would expect; think its more for the publicity benefits?

Who knows, I don't watch or listen to ESPN very much if at all, but almost everyone I'm listening to or watching otherwise seems to be picking USC to win in a blowout and I hear some saying OSU will lose around 4 or 5. I also heard Jim Rome say that he thinks USC could possibly beat Oakland. But then again it is Jim Rome.
