JONATHAN QUILTER | Dispatch
Ohio State defensive end Rob Rose pressures Troy quarterback Jamie Hampton. The Trojans were effective on short passes but did little downfield.
Facts of the matter
The Buckeyes had to be wary of anyone nicknamed Trojans, and while these men of Troy certainly weren't USC-caliber, they weren't fodder, either. Troy hung in for three quarters, trailing only 14-10, but couldn't land a knockout blow. In the end, the Trojans went home knowing they could play with the big boys but kicking themselves for a few blown plays that could have put them in position for victory.
"We had a chance to be in the game late and we couldn't quite get it done in the second half," coach Larry Blakeney said. "You've got to make plays and create extra possessions. They did and we didn't. Simple as that."
Shining moment
It had to be the 45-yard touchdown pass from Jamie Hampton to Jerrel Jernigan late in the second quarter. Jernigan caught the short pass at the Ohio State 40-yard line and immediately shed an attempted tackle by linebacker Marcus Freeman. Jernigan then slipped the grasp of Kurt Coleman and got past Donald Washington. Coleman had one last chance to prevent the touchdown, but Jernigan rode him into the end zone to cut Ohio State's lead to 14-10.
