i give the guy credit, you rarely can say it isnt his own list. hes willing to go against the flow on some of the guys. sometimes hes right, sometimes hes wrong. its nothing more than another view to be taken with a grain of salt. in less than year these lists will mean nothing, heck i really believe the lists mean nothing now. as an nhl agent i know always says, your draft spot is important for one day, then it doesnt mean a darn thing...

1) Its a prospect list...not position specific.

2) I know Duane likes Mewhort better on defensive potential due to how he comes off the ball. Also, he will be the first to tell you that OL/DL is the toughest to rate and that usually equals lower rankings.

3) I'm not a Payne fan but Duane knows more about that situation...apparently the kid does CARRIES that team and is often running for his life. He likes his potential.

I'm not accusing anyone yet...but I smell a little Scout/BN bias here and we will not play that game on BP.

If you want to discuss the list, do it with the usal amount of class and sense that we expect around here.

the next time duane long watches any kid on this list play in person will be the first time.

also true of most people in this thread.

Lets not fall into that ND mindset where all OSU recruits are being snubbed and should be higher if they aren't top 10.

I haven't done this, but it would be interesting to look back at his list from the last few years and see how his success in predicting compares to rivals and other sources.

Very true.

Also, I will get more information from one half of a gamefilm than going to a kid's game. Watching 3-4 gamefilms paints a pretty good picture...loafs, missed assignments, etc. You see the ugly that highlight films don't show.

Honestly, how many of you said "Jack who??" or "Linsley what??" when they were offered?

Now that they are committed/leaning they should suddenly have a guaranteed spot on every Ohio High School list?

that is probably true of most people on this board. however, most people on this board aren't producing a list and using it as a product to get individuals to give money to their website.

Not guaranteed, but there definitely needs to be some justification with some of these rankings. I think a few of these goes beyond where he just think player X is better than player Y based solely on film. I think he's taking some gambles ranking projects (like Brandt and Payne) so high, and hoping they pan out.

I'd have no problem with the rankings if I thought they were really how Long feels about their talent, but I don't think that's the case.

I'm also someone without any loyalties to any recruiting site (Why people even have loyalties to recruiting sites is beyond me).

It's like when someone puts a team like Pitt in the top 15 to start the season. Is it based on anything they've done in the past? No, but there's the potential that it will pan out and that person will look like a genius.

These rankings have been in the works for months...they are based on his reviews of gamefilm, talking with high school coaches, college coaches, and a personal opinion of projection.

I have zero problem with the discussion/dissection/debate. I only question the veracity of some of the comments.

Duane is like any other recruiting guy, he has his quirks and his tendencies...but I will tell you with 100% certainty that this list not based on selling subscriptions.

I don't think it is either. Long is at least willing to take fliers on kids, something you'll almost never see from Rivals/Scouts. I'll give him credit for that when it comes to being willing to go out on a limb. I just question which branches he's choosing is all.

if your aim is to make your own, independently-derived ranking, you should arguably...focus solely on film, complete games viewed in person, caliber of competition, and perhaps physical measurables.

Good point. And despite my poorly worded comment above, I would think you're right that game film is just as good as sitting in the stands, even aside from the added benefits of being able to rewind and rewatch, and watch in slow-motion. Further to your point, I've always wondered how people felt justified in making talent evaluations on the basis of highlight films alone. I've seen highlight films of D-3 players that looked pretty darn impressive. That's what highlight films do: look impressive. I'd think it would be virtually impossible to distinguish a middling D-1A talent from an elite D-1A talent on the basis of highlight films.

I do too.

I questioned him on Payne a month ago...I know the late arrival of films also changed/will change this list.

Some coaches promote kids and get them out...others do very little. When it comes to something like this, that can make a huge difference.

what would be his motive for manipulating these rankings if he didn't believe in them? To sell subscriptions? If you believe that is his motive, the tOSU recruits would be given a boost more than anything. That would make no sense why he would rank obscure recruits with weak offer lists to higher positions? unless there is some diabolical plan that you know of....

I don't think it's to sell subscriptions. In fact, I already said why I think this is the case. Look at my previous Pitt analogy. Long having Payne so high is analogous to a pollster ranking a team like Pitt or Minnesota high to start the season. There's no basis for the ranking, but if it turns out that person is right, they look like a genius. I think that's Long's justification for some of these rankings.
