Ohio Bobcats (official thread)

Interesting.

I'm copying and pasting a couple of parts of this article here (I think some will encounter a paywall):

"It is unclear what connection, if any, Smith’s Nov. 25 reprimand had on him being placed on leave and later fired for cause. Ohio University did not immediately respond to an additional request for comment on the matter. Elliott had no further comment."

And

"We vigorously dispute Ohio University’s grounds for the termination for cause of Coach Brian Smith,” Smith’s attorney, Rex Elliott, said in a statement Wednesday. “He is shocked and dismayed by this turn of events, and we plan to fight this wrongful termination to protect his good name. Coach Smith is an ethical man who has done an exemplary job for the University. He wants nothing but the best for the players, coaches, and the entire Bobcat community.”

What is going on here? He's lawyered up? He's going to court for wrongful termination? Curiouser and curiouser.

If they fired him, officially, for having alcohol in his desk (that he used infrequently and discreetly, as he described) that's within their rights, I suppose. Technically. But it's definitely a cover story.

So he's basically saying he dated a student, which isn't against policy (I think he is right about that - she wasn't HIS student), but he wasn't having an affair. So, he and the wife were already separated? Or he and the student didn't have sex? Leave it alone and move on, Coach.

The alcohol stuff is just there to bolster the rest. OU won't tolerate drinking by their higher level administration/coaches? No comment.

Ohio U should send UM a fruit basket. This story makes them look great in comparison.

It was reported that he and his wife were finalizing their divorce at the time of initial suspension…. Speculation but probably because of the affair, and I’m sure there was more leading up to all of this.
