Ohio puts scare in sluggish OSU
Buckeyes admit shortcomings

COLUMBUS - If you need someone to cut through all the New Age philosophical yarns, skip the feel-good spin and refuse to engage in any kind of performance- enhancement lingo, then Brian Hartline is probably your guy.

After No. 3 Ohio State stumbled and fumbled and just dumbled its way through a 26-14 win over Ohio University yesterday, the junior wide receiver for the Buckeyes wanted nothing to do with putting the afternoon's developments in the best possible light.

Hartline chose to spread out the cold, harsh facts and then expose them with a flood lamp.

"Our performance was pathetic - OU should have won the game," Hartline said after the Buckeyes had to score two fourth-quarter touchdowns to finally overtake and then put away the Bobcats (0-2).

Isn't this the one penalty they actually called though? This is the first QB right?

Indeed. There were plenty of infractions of holding. Often times though, the guys were in a position to make a play still but didn't capitalize. However, I remember one play where Thad ran right past his guy and it looked the OL just pushed him square in the back right past the QB.

They will get held again next week. Happens every week and for some reason it doesn't get called. Who trotted out that story that statistically teams seem to play their "cleanest" games against Ohio State?

By the way how great was Spielman as the side line commentator?

That said, I'm as worried as the next guy about next week. I was excited before yesterday. What has me more concerned than the WRs, OL, DL though is how bummed Coach Tressel was during his post game presser. I don't think he seemed that disappointed after the last two NC losses.

Whatever. Obvious changes need to take place in the next 6 days and I'm sure that the senior leadership and coaching staff will take care of it. At least I hope they do.

Two quick thoughts on the game yesterday:

1. OSU's o-line seemed to get dominated by OU's d-line. This probably happens more often than we notice, but Beanie is such a great RB, he is able to break tackles and get positive yardage even when the blocking isn't so great.

2. Was it just me, or did almost all of the playcalling on offense consist of the following: (1) run to the right side, (2) run to the left side, (3) throw a bomb into coverage or (4) throw a WR screen? It seemed that OSU's predictability on offense helped OU out a lot yesterday.

After reviewing all of my pics from the game, a TON of OU's QB escapes showed the closest DE held or clipped badly.

There were still way too many breakdowns out there, but they took full advantage of how the game was being called.

To be fair so did OSU. The punt return was sprung by a pretty obvious clip/hold that was uncalled.

Yes, that impressive win over Virginia who beat Richmond 16-0 yesterday.....

Again to be fair you must also take note of the South Dakota State 40 YSU 7 score if we are going to go there.

I guess that I actually also can't contain myself any longer.

We have a coach that plans for the season. He fielded a team without its top running back, who is an integral part of his offensive plans, against a relatively weak opponent, a week before the hardest game of the year.

I trust a man, who is in anybody's list of top three coaches in college football, to have applied his mind to the task at hand and to have his team ready to play at USC.

What I can't contain is my frustration at all of the whinging going on. Enough! Personally, I think we are going to surprise a lot of people. But, make no mistake, USC is a very good team and the game is going to be tough going.

I remember going to the barber shop on Oakland Park Avenue as a kid and listening to the men argue about football. There was always some blowhard running down Woody Hayes. When he was fired, they all celebrated because "it was about time". Then, looking back during the Cooper years, they cried for the golden era of Ohio State football to return.

This is not a forum for people like that. We don't care two hoots about what Mark May says. If we get moved out of the top 10, then lots of us think those voters will be embarrassed as hell next week. And, if we should lose the game to a better team on the day, then we know that the world will not end.

If your support for this team runs so thin that you have to resort to whinging during the game and now afterwards, then bloody go somewhere else and post.

:osu:

The coaches agree that Steve has graded out a "Winning performance"

Nice effort Steve.

I am sure I am not saying anything here that has not been said but here are my quick thoughts.

- Happy to a get a win. End of the day that is what matters and we found a way to win.

- Games like this happen.. multiple reasons why but games like this happen. Ask USC when they played Stanford last year, thinking about that makes me appreciate the fact we walked away with a W.

On point 2: Not a lot of film for USC to look at..... Do just enough to win... play it close to the vest... I'm not sure why anyone on this board is surprised (not suggesting you're in the "chicken little" category, 07, just using your post as a sounding board)

Yeah, but they beat the shit out of Virginia... We're doomed. :roll2:

From a very busy Buckeye Alum...

Finally got to go to a game for once in a very long time - a little more scary then I wanted it to be. After listening to all the "OSU-who?" in CA last weekend and missing the YState game, I was looking forward to a good win over Ohio. I still had fun, had a great seat, and the score made for some drama.

Observations:
Jim Cordle? Why were you hiking the ball to me in 39A? I mean I am good at NCAA Football09, but I don't think I would have been able to make a play from the stands.

Not happy about the Ref. non-calls..

I was just about to ask where the TE's were and then Jake had to go and make a great play. Make the hometown proud!:groove:

It seemed like there were an awful lot of short passes to guys who can go deep. Are we not faster then their coverage?

Loved the turnovers and SMALL was BIG on special teams.

Michael Redd - Thanks for bringing USA back to where we belong in Olympic BBall.

After years of complaining about the crowd being so quiet when they need to be loud, I have noticed that being 1 person yelling among a group of non-yellers does not do much...

Looking forward to a frequently sacked Sanchez, hopefully a wide-open playbook, never-quit 2002 NC mentality, and a close, but decisive win next week.

I can sum up what I saw while at the game yesterday very easily. LACK OF INTENSITY.

It was evident from the moment the team took the field. Half of the team barely jogged out for the game. But it wasn't just the team that lacked intensity, it was the coaches, the fans and the band as well.

Most of what I saw with the team has already been documented, so no reason to rehash the effort.

I'm not sure what the plan was for this game, but the coaches seemed to be out of sync and there was a lot of substitution confusion on the sidelines. This is a veteran staff and team that should be well oiled even at this early stage.

The crowd was less than enthusiastic until they realized this was a dogfight. If a 4th quarter Hang On Sloopy OH IO chant is a tradition, you wouldn't have known it from either the band or the crowd. You couldn't hear the band let alone the crowd.

I think we ought to do away with playing MAC teams...there is no benefit to us in playing them. I would rather see us play a mid tier SEC like Kentucky or a Big East team like Louisville or someone that can keep the team inspired and not looking forward to that one big non conference foe.

I believe that we bring it against USC....we better....

Did you see the first TD drive for tOSU? Looked to me as someone lit a fire under those boys and they finally started knocking the d-line off the ball. As much as I was disappointed with the close game, Tress knows what the hell he is doing. Why would he go out and throw the whole damn playbook out there against OU and give USC a chance the plan for it? Yes we should have stomped the [censored] out of them, but a win is a win and at the end of the year this won't matter!
