Game Thread Ohio 14, Ohio State 26 (Sept. 6)

After reviewing all of my pics from the game, a TON of OU's QB escapes showed the closest DE held or clipped badly.

There were still way too many breakdowns out there, but they took full advantage of how the game was being called.

Yeah. I won't make excuses, but OU really did do a good job "feeling out" the refs and using it to their advantage. Jim Davidson has a great picture up of Lawrence Wilson's jersey pulled a good 7 inches off his back. So maybe it's not entirely necessary to claim the sky is falling down concerning our inability to contain mobile QBs quite yet.

However, I was noticing that during the game itself, and I would have loved for JT or some of the players to step up and tell the refs, "Hey guys, I'm getting mugged out there, can ya throw me a bone?"

I think that is one very big thing to take away from this game. They surely know they underachieved and will come out hungrier than ever. The staff knows they underachieved and will push them harder than ever The negative press that they're are gonna be hearing all week will only fuel that fire. In the end, this may well be a blessing in disguise.

Agreed. Getting embarrased by Ohio University raises the odds of winning against USC. Also, having everyone slobber over USC in the big win against Virginia decreases their odds of beating Ohio State.

Next week is going to be incredibly ugly, count on it. Uninspired play was only half the problem going on today, the rest is actual issues with blocking, blown coverage, no separation from the receivers. I've been holding my tongue all week, but can't do it any longer. USC by 3 TDs, just deal with it and move on - I'd still like to see them in a Rose Bowl.

And lest I forget As the Drum major broke to lead the I dotter to his post, the sousaphone player and the musician behind him swapped a lo 5 . :tongue2:

I saw that also.......

Some buckeye fans need a reality check.........

Obvioulsy, the team did not do a good job of being focused on OU this past week and the results showed.....

Some can focus on the negatives, but I will focus on the positive that we still won the game despite a very poor performance from the offense and kicking game, a costly turnover and lack of intensity for much of the game.

Bob Hunter commentary: Buckeyes lose ground with homely win

Saturday, September 6, 2008 8:58 PM
By Bob Hunter

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

The long faces suggested a plague of locusts, a devastating earthquake or a loss to Michigan.
Four Ohio State captains flanked coach Jim Tressel at a table, and one by one they tried to put a 26-14 win over Ohio -- a game the Bobcats led entering the fourth quarter -- into perspective. They weren't any better with the microphone than they had been with the football, and that performance screamed for a pair of nose clips.
"A win is a win," cornerback Malcolm Jenkins said.
In the old days, maybe. In this instance, in these national championship-or-nothing times, the clich doesn't fit.
There was a time when winning was pretty much all that mattered in college football. No matter the opponent, no matter the score, seasons were judged on won-loss records. At the end of the regular season, teams made it to a bowl game based on their overall record and where they finished in the conference standings, and there was no price to pay for perception.

Yes, that impressive win over Virginia who beat Richmond 16-0 yesterday.....

The Bottom Line

Oh, say, do USC
This team matching TDs
With the mighty Trojans?
It's hard to believe.
Work to do? Much. Time to do it? Not so much. Leaves are awarded on a zero-to-five basis, five being the best.
Offense (two leaves)
No doubt that the shelved Beanie is a major cog. But does that mean the others should look like they're playing in clogs? This was mostly a 272-yard dud, salvaged only by some hard running (and better blocking) in the second half. Was that a passing game or a passing lame?

Scarlet and Gray Matter

Saturday, September 6, 2008 8:02 PM
By Rob Oller

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH
The game at hand

Short-attention-span synopsis: Whew! This almost became Scarlet and Gray Splatter. Small-ball results in Ohio State home run. OU-oh-me-oh-my. Bobcats' Boo-who almost becomes Buckeyes boo-hoo. On to L.A. ... gulp.
Pregame buzz: With no Beanie, the Buckeyes would be forced to lower the Boom .., or the Wells ... or the Saine into the backfield. None of the replacements turned in a performance worthy of Heisman discussion, but Dan "Boom" Herron did rush for half a hundred.
The $62 question: It was like a trip to the physical therapist in that fans actually paid to be put through pain. This is not the kind of near "history in the making" any Ohio State diehard wants to remember.

OSU notebook: Rushing game sluggish
Trio of replacements for injured Wells delivers in spurts
Saturday, September 6, 2008 8:46 PM
By Ken Gordon, Mark Znidar and Tim May

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

How fitting that on a day when Ohio State was minus Beanie, one of his replacements said they graded a B-minus.
Tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells sat out a 26-14 win over Ohio University yesterday after suffering an injury to his right toe last week against Youngstown State. In his place, Maurice Wells, Dan Herron and Brandon Saine combined for 113 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries, a 4.3-yard average.
"I felt we probably performed maybe a B-minus," Maurice Wells said. "I felt we did well, but not as good as we could have."

I guess that I actually also can't contain myself any longer.

We have a coach that plans for the season. He fielded a team without its top running back, who is an integral part of his offensive plans, against a relatively weak opponent, a week before the hardest game of the year.

I trust a man, who is in anybody's list of top three coaches in college football, to have applied his mind to the task at hand and to have his team ready to play at USC.

What I can't contain is my frustration at all of the whinging going on. Enough! Personally, I think we are going to surprise a lot of people. But, make no mistake, USC is a very good team and the game is going to be tough going.

I remember going to the barber shop on Oakland Park Avenue as a kid and listening to the men argue about football. There was always some blowhard running down Woody Hayes. When he was fired, they all celebrated because "it was about time". Then, looking back during the Cooper years, they cried for the golden era of Ohio State football to return.

This is not a forum for people like that. We don't care two hoots about what Mark May says. If we get moved out of the top 10, then lots of us think those voters will be embarrassed as hell next week. And, if we should lose the game to a better team on the day, then we know that the world will not end.

If your support for this team runs so thin that you have to resort to whinging during the game and now afterwards, then bloody go somewhere else and post.

Interceptions fail to create jovial mood

Saturday, September 6, 2008 9:11 PM
By Tim May

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH

Ohio State intercepted four passes yesterday, and in any other game that would have been cause for celebration because the Buckeyes haven't matched that feat since 2001.
But considering OSU had just eked out a 26-14 victory over Ohio University, the postgame atmosphere was subdued.
"Obviously, when you get as many takeaways as we did, that's a good thing," said linebacker James Laurinaitis, who had one pick.
But he also remembered how the Bobcats drove 72 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter, giving them a lead they held until early in the fourth.

Jon Spencer: OSU lucky to survive a laugher

By JON SPENCER ? News Journal ? September 7, 2008

Ohio State fans expected a laugher. Instead they got a comedy of errors.
Good thing the Seinfeld Campus Tour bus, a rolling museum that honors the popular 1990s sitcom, was parked outside the 'Shoe on Saturday, giving visitors their fill of giggles and guffaws.
Otherwise, things would have been downright morose.
Ohio University, not third-ranked OSU, winning after three quarters -- are you joking?
The yukfest everyone anticipated never materialized, unless your idea of humor involves dropped passes, poor passes, shotgun snafus, stymied short-yardage runs, missed PATs and third down pratfalls from a defense whose idea of a punchline usually involves socking someone upside the helmet.
It would help being a "Seinfeld" fan to get this analogy, but it's almost as if wigged-out neighbor Cosmo Kramer was calling the plays with hapless George Costanza under center and Newman -- hello, Newman -- dropping the mail on defense.
Things looked so bad, especially with injured tailback Chris "Beanie" Wells reduced to spectator, not even a comedic genius like Jerry Seinfeld, at his stand-up best, could have lightened the mood.

Mistakes stop OU from pulling upset vs. OSU

By DAVE WEIDIG ? Special to the News Journal ? September 7, 2008

COLUMBUS -- Ohio University coach Frank Solich isn't into moral victories.
His Bobcats led third-ranked Ohio State 7-6 at halftime and took a 14-12 lead into the fourth quarter. But a muffed punt led to the Buckeyes' go-ahead score and a punt return for another TD finally finished off a surprisingly hard-earned 26-14 win.
Despite being a 35-point underdog, the Bobcats didn't come to Ohio Stadium just to keep it close. You could see it on the faces of Solich and his players.
"We don't feel good," Solich said. "It was good to take the lead into the fourth quarter, but we would've liked it to be that way at the end of the fourth quarter."
"They came out today with a lot of confidence," OSU linebacker Marcus Freeman said. "They came to beat us. After the first score they had a lot of confidence, too. Our offense was struggling, and we knew we needed to get it together."
A muffed punt and four interceptions hurt.

OSU Notebook: Backup tailback comes up big late against OU

By JON SPENCER ? News Journal ? September 7, 2008

COLUMBUS -- With "Beanie" ailing, the Buckeyes turned to "Boom" in the crunch.
Playing without injured starting tailback Chris Wells, Ohio State literally handed things over to redshirt freshman Daniel "Boom" Herron to get untracked in the second half of Saturday's 26-14 victry over five-touchdown underdog Ohio University.
Herron had 32 yards rushing on seven carries, including the 1-yard payoff, on a 73-yard, 13-play drive to give the Buckeyes their first TD of the day -- at 2:51 of the third quarter.
OU had expanded its halftime lead to 14-6 earlier in the period when it recovered a botched shotgun snap in the end zone for a touchdown.
When Herron scored, it was like a huge weight was lifted off the offense's shoulders. The Buckeyes went on to capitalize on a muffed punt recovery for the go-ahead score and then sealed the victory on Ray Small's 70-yard punt return.
The general consensus seemed to be that "Boom" kick-started the comeback.
