Official Tour de France thread.

There's only 1 day each year where they race in a team time trail. Every rider is part of a team. Teams were in their own group for the whole day for the time trial; today's course was around 67 km (41.85 miles). Each team has 9 riders, and they ride in a straight line to minimize wind resistance. The guys take turns leading for brief stretches, then pull out to the side and slow gradually, allow everybody to pass them, and they then hook on to the end of the line.

Teams leave 5 minutes apart so they almost never catch up to the team ahead of them. When the team crosses the line, as long as there are at least 5 riders from the team left in the group, they all get the same elapsed time. Some riders slow down and can't stay with the group, and they their own actual total time. Some teams will let 1 or 2 guys drop off if they can't handle the pace. It's a trade-off, because everybody that's left has to then spend more time in the lead, and that's what uses up a lot of energy.

Lance's team finished in 1 hour, 10 minutes 39 seconds today, which set a record average speed (for a team trial) of 35.54 mph.

You can't appreciate what these animals can do until you compete in a bike race of some sort yourself. I would be lucky if I could even get up to 35 MPH on level ground at 100% effort, let alone average that pace for an hour and ten minutes.

Well, everything is setting up perfectly so far...

There are still mountain stages in the Alps and Pyrenees, and that's where the tour is won. You can certainly lose any chance of winning at any point during the Tour, but you can't really take the win until the mountain stages.

Let's hope today's stage, Saturday, was a wake-up call for the Discovery Team. They were not able to stay with Lance as the other top riders challenged him on the climb. Fortunately, he was able to stay with everyone and maintain a one minute lead. If what happens today happens in the mountains it is going to be a tough one. I do hope the fact they did not scout this stage was the reason the team fell behind.

Discovery definitely needs to protect Lance much better. T-Mobile has 3 dangerous guys within 2 minutes of the overall lead (Ullrich, Vinokourov, Kloden), and when they took turns attacking on the last climb, Lance was unable to counter all of their moves without any teammates. CSC also has 4 guys in the top 10 of the standings (Voigt, Basso, Julich, and Sastre), and Basso proved last year he can handle the mountains pretty well.

I'll be shocked if Lance doesn't have at least 2 guys stay with him until the last climb tomorrow, though.

I had no freaking idea this race was televised until I saw this thread. I have direcTV and lo and freaking behold, they got OLN. Me and the wifey watched this on Saturday and we dug it immensely. I thought a bike race would be kind of boring but to my surprise we watched an hour and a half of this and were hooked. Thanks for the find.

I can't wait until Lance loses. He is one of the biggest athletic frauds of all-time. People rip Barry Bonds but Lance has ingested more illegal substances than Ben Johnson, and Jason Giambi combined. I am glad he overcame cancer but he has had some "help" winning 6 tours. I don't care who wins as long as it's not Lance.

Ah, that must be why he pays for the drug testing the cycling association conducts. Nothing like throwing them off the scent by sponsoring what they do so they can do more of it. Oh yeah, he was the first to be random tested again this tour.

Plain and simple. He is a physical freak that has some genetic traits that make him a more competitive cyclist (longer femur, stronger heart, etc). Second, he specializes on this one race. Finally, he knows he will never go through pain on a bike like he did when he was fighting cancer.
