Probably because the causal fan in America has no clue WTF a "cap" is. I'm not justifying it, but I imagine they are trying not to lose their casual fans with jargon.

I figure that's the reason. I guess my thought is that it's easy to explain, and the the British announcers give us enough jargon and colloquialisms that one more wouldn't matter.
