Official FIFA 2010 World Cup Discussion

After what happened to Andres Escobar in '94, I hope these guys are safe when they are forced to return home.

I can't imagine that Dear Leader, who shot 37 under par in his first round of golf ever (:roll2:) is pleased with his country's team getting undressed like this.

It wasn't terribly cold and Cape Town this afternoon, but I'll bet the North Korean bus was pretty cold on the way back to the hotel. That was the worst drubbing of the World Cup so far and I don't think I would like to go back to North Korea and explained that to my "stakeholders".

For as good as the refs had been the 1st set of games, they have been THAT BAD the 2nd leg. :shake:

The refs had it pretty easy in the first set of match days. Hardly any of the teams were actually trying to do anything. Now that some teams are trying by attacking the goal and other teams are trying by crumpling into the fetal position, they have fucked the refs' shit right up.

Commies are getting steamrolled by Portugal. There have been 3 goals in the last 5 minutes, and it's 7-0 as we near the end (mercifully).

Wow.
It was only 1-0 when I left for work at halftime.

That Chile-Switzerland game is a perfect example of why so many Americans hate soccer....which is too bad, but unfortunately on display all too often at the WC.

Yeah, it was ugly. Lots of cards and lots of whining.

I thought the referees did get two difficult offsides calls correct in that game, though. They wiped out a Chile goal early in the second half when a guy didn't touch the ball, but was in offsides position almost directly in front of the goalie, so he was a factor in the play.

On Chile's header, the pass that went past the offside trap went to a guy that was onside and then took the ball to the endline before crossing it. Another player was past the second-to-last defender (including the keeper) when that pass was originated, but was not involved in the play, so it was proper to let it go. Despite what Ruud Gullit said after the game about that play, it was a good no-call.

I don't believe Dear Leader is too "with it" these days. From everything I read through the major wires - he's had multiple strokes and rarely is seend in public.

BTW, ESPN's 30 for 30 documentary "The Two Escobars" airs tomorrow night (Tuesday, June 22) at 9:00pm. It has already been screened at the Tribeca Film Festival and Cannes and has garnered a lot of glowing reviews. Run-time of 100 minutes, so it's longer than most in the 30 for 30 series.

DVR has already been set.

For those who don't remember or didn't pay attention to soccer back then - in 1994, Colombian Andres Escobar scored an own goal in a group stage match against the US. The Colombians were favored to move on to the knockout stage. The own goal by Escobar was the difference in a 2-1 US victory that wound up sending the Americans to the Round of 16 instead of Colombia. Upon his return to his home country, Escobar was shot and killed, presumably by folks involved in the drug trade who lost their asses gambling on the Colombian team.

I am quite excited for the movie and interested in learning more about Medilin and Pablo Escobar
