WR or DT - which do the Chiefs need the most?
Both.
Simple answer (surprising to some I bet) is that the Chiefs select the highly athletic and powerful DT Marcus Thomas out of UF.
Here is why ....
We did resign DT Ron Edwards quite
recently, yet an improvement on the line remains a vital concern. Got to find a way to turn Tamba free!
Meanwhile at WR we have too many speedy and small WRs on squad - need to give the QB a good target with reasonable size as an option in the passing game. Like last round it looks like the WR talent still provides some quality picks. Truth is we think, OK, we
hope that WR will still provide good quality in the next round.
Because the depth of choices remains (will, hope will remain) flush at WR it comes down to the available DTs.
Of the remaining "Day One" type options left on board you have Kareem Brown and Marcus Thomas. Also intriguing is Ryan McBean the lanky Jamaican import and ex- OK State Cowboy.
Kareem comes with the cleaner sheet versus the off the field issue plagued Marcus Thomas, McBean has tools and measurables, but the question is how well that will translate to the next level.
Brown is your classic collapse the pocket Tackle - but has the slows in other aspects of the game with technique that still demands improvement. Which is frankly surprising, he is essentially under-developed by what should have been a great defensive staff in Miami. Thomas by contrast is a freak. In 5 games to start the Gators 2006 season he netted 4 sacks, a rate of production no other player left came close to matching. He can penetrate as well or better than Brown, plus has the speed, strength and technique to get to the QB. Without the subsequent off-field concerns Thomas easily would be vying for a 1st round draft spot.
Despite the character issues the Chiefs select Marcus Thomas at DT.
Herm and the rest of staff will get this kid onto the straight and narrow, enabling him to fulfill his enormous potential - probably with a performance based contract, coupled to some of that Edwards branded father figure guidance.
