OC/WR Coach Brian Hartline (Official Thread)

Which Buckeye had the greatest impact on the Ohio State history of the position he played?

  • Brian Hartline

  • Other (This is the wrong answer)

Brian is a 'character kid' ...like a Chris Spielman. He will become a terrific Buckeye because he will never quit or allow himself to be outworked. If his brother is anything like him, and I'd bet he is, he'll be a great addition next year as well.

Brian will be making his official visit to Ohio State this weekend. His brother Mike will make the trip with him. Brian hopes to check out the academic side of things, something he didn't do when he visited on gamedays.

Coach Hazell had an in home visit with the Hartlines:

Hartline also said Hazell helped to put his parents at ease regarding his decision.

"My parents had their questions answered," he said.

He took his official this past weekend. All the current players referred to him as the guy from Dustin Fox's school. He is close with Dustin but he got to know alot of the other players on this trip including Youboty, Salley and Gonzo.

He took his brother Mike Hartline with him on his visit (he says he was recruiting his brother without him even knowing it). He said he brother would choose tOSU if he had to decide right now.

The tOSU doctors examined him and indicated that he is ahead of schedule on his recovery. He was originally supposed to get his rod out of his leg in January but now it will be Dec. 22nd. He is able to jog on his leg now.

He also mentioned that he thinks Worthington is solid. Doug's dad told Doug to make sure he comes to tOSU.

Can't keep GlenOak star down

Hartline recovering from broken leg, eager to run track, compete at OSU summer practices
By Tom Reed
Beacon Journal staff writer

PLAIN TOWNSHIP - Years of working as an operating-room nurse have exposed Laurie Hartline to her share of squeamish sights.

Few prepared her for the one she saw through her video camera viewfinder last August while attending GlenOak's season-opening football game. It was the image of her oldest son, Brian Hartline, lying on the field, arms pounding the Fawcett Stadium turf, his left leg bent awkwardly below the knee at a 45-degree angle.

``I went down on the field and I took hold of his hand and shoulder and Brian looked up at me,'' Laurie Hartline said. ``Brian said, `This is really bad,' and I said, `Yes Brian, it is pretty bad.'

``I immediately got on my cell phone and called (Mercy Medical Center) and let them know we would be coming.''

Hartline, an Ohio State recruit who will sign his NCAA letter of intent this Wednesday on national signing day, broke his left tibia and fibula returning a punt against Central-Hower. A promising senior season -- one which he expected to catch numerous passes from his brother, Mike -- was over before halftime of the first game.

Doctors reassured the family the injury was not career-threatening. Laurie figured her son would be back in time for summer football practice at OSU. Her prognosis was founded on medical experience and 17 years of being Brian Hartline's mother.

``He is very competitive and goal-oriented. I had to keep reminding him to slow down,'' she said. ``It doesn't surprise me he has healed so quickly.''

One of the state's most coveted receivers, Hartline is expected back in plenty of time for Ohio State summer practices. In fact, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound multi-sport athlete plans to run track this spring for GlenOak.

Hartline was a top-four finisher at the state meet in the 110- and 300-meter hurdles a year ago. If he reaches 100 percent by late May, he could duplicate or improve those results. He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.4 seconds.

GlenOak football coach Jack Rose said Hartline is realistic enough that he won't risk a setback by over-extending himself. But he knows the kind of drive embedded in a player he considers every bit the athlete of former GlenOak and Ohio State defensive back Dustin Fox, who's preparing for April's NFL Draft.

``He has great hands and he's always in motion, never standing still on the field,'' Rose said. ``Brian has great body control and some of that comes from track. He really can do a lot of things on the field.''

Hartline, who gave his oral commitment last June, said he's not sure whether the Buckeyes will use him as a receiver or defensive back. During his GlenOak career he also played quarterback, punted and returned kicks.

He knows that he might have to redshirt as a freshman, especially if he remains at receiver. The Buckeyes have young, front-line talent at the position in the form of Santonio Holmes, Ted Ginn Jr. and Anthony Gonzalez. Ginn and Gonzalez played as true freshmen last season and their emergence helped the Buckeyes win five of their last six games and finish 8-4.

``One of the things I like about Coach (Jim) Tressel is that if you can contribute, he is going to play you regardless of how young you are,'' said Hartline, who chose Ohio State over Michigan, Purdue and Florida State.

He is happy to be playing any position given the serious nature of his injury. Hartline spends three days a week rehabilitating the leg at FRS Therapy and already is doing some light running. To see him walk, it's hard to believe Hartline had a foot-long titanium rod inserted in his leg as of late December.

Hartline, who has a 3.7 grade-point average, might study sports medicine at Ohio State. He certainly has enough rehab training. Besides the leg injury, he also has broken his collarbone, an arm and a wrist.

``I don't know what it is -- I drink milk all the time,'' Hartline said.

It hurt missing a senior season that included a trip to the playoffs and a chance to play alongside his brother Mike, a 6-foot-5 junior quarterback being recruited heavily by Ohio State and many major colleges.

Hartline played quarterback until midway through the 2003 season when he was moved to receiver to give his brother an opportunity to run the offense. He caught 32 passes for 409 yards and two touchdowns.

Ohio State has stood behind Hartline, telling him the injury has no impact on his scholarship. Tressel visited Hartline on his recruiting travels last week, stopping by the high school and creating quite a stir.

``Coach Tressel had to sign a lot of autographs,'' Hartline said.

Ohio State's highly publicized off-the-field problems have not caused Hartline to waver in his OSU commitment. The NCAA is investigating the program for wide-ranging improprieties alleged by former tailback Maurice Clarett.

``I feel very good about sending my son to Ohio State,'' Laurie Hartline said.

Thanks to his tenacity and resolve, she is sending him there with two strong legs.

Hartline Ready To Sign
By Bill Greene Ohio High Scout/Contributor
Date: Feb 1, 2005

Signing Day is always a day of anxious anticipation as there are never any sure things until the players sign their names on the dotted line. But one player that no one has to worry about is wide receiver Brian Hartline, who will be getting his signature in early tomorrow morning. Ohio High scout/contributor Bill Greene talked with Hartline about signing day and his future as a Buckeye.

I caught up with Ohio State recruit Brian Hartline of Canton GlenOak to talk about the Ohio State recruiting class. With the commitment of wide receiver Brian Robiskie, it's been rumored that either Hartline or Andre Amos would be moving to defense in the fall.

When asked about the possibility of playing defensive back, Hartline said, "Nobody has said anything about it to me. Coach Tucker has told me he's going to get me on his side of the ball.

"He talked to me a lot down at the OSU games I went to. Coach Hazell joked with me to stay away from Mel Tucker. I was under the impression that Amos would be moving to defense, if any of us did, but I don't know anything official.

"I would move in a minute if the coaches came to me and asked me to. I want to play receiver, but my main interest is in helping the team. The quickest way to get on the field is what I'm looking for."

"My mindset is as an offensive player, but that could change in a hurry if the coaches felt I would be a better defensive player," Hartline said. "If I had to choose between safety and cornerback, I'd choose cornerback. Ted Ginn Sr. always kidded me about being similar to Ted Jr. because of my hurdling background."

When the subject of redshirting was brought up, Brian said," Jim Tressel told me he sees no reason for me to redshirt, as long as my leg is healed, which it is. He told me he wants to see me on the field and see where I fit in. I would love to play special teams if the opportunity came up."

"I've been running hard the past few weeks and my leg feels great. My doctor has cleared me to do whatever I want, and I'm testing myself all the time. I go back to see him in six weeks, and I should be totally 100 percent at that time."

With signing day only one day away, Hartline talked about signing with Ohio State.

"It's a dream come true," Hartline said. "It really hasn't hit me yet that I'm going to be a Buckeye. We have it all set up at the school for Wednedsay morning. My parents and grandparents will be there, and they're real excited. The coaches want us to send our faxes in early, so mine will be sent first thing in the morning."

A CB??? News to me, but great news!!! If Brian can be a shutdown CB for us, with his height, speed and vertical leap... he could be a stud at the position. And the comarisons to TG2? Wow, I cannot wait to bring him in here. Now, I know it is a stretch, but Brian will be a great Buckeye.
