OC/WR Coach Brian Hartline (National Champion)

Which Buckeye had the greatest impact on the Ohio State history of the position he played?

  • Brian Hartline

  • Other (This is the wrong answer)

It all comes down to his ability to hire coordinators, when given a HC opportunity.

I’ve used the example repeatedly, but Dabo went from used cars salesman, to WR Coach, to interim HC, to (2) National Championship coach, while admittedly not being good at “X’s and O’s”. He’s struggled lately as he refuses to adapt to modern landscape, but the blueprint is there. Dabo was an elite CEO style coach who was the closer on recruits, but relied on coordinators to handle game-planning.

Maybe Hartline becomes a great play caller, but his obvious strength is recruiting. He crushes it yearly. If he does take a HC position, it’s bc that school knows he’s about to start a development pipeline. The key is his coordinators and how well he can assemble a staff.
Reading this post and thinking of Cigetti. Guy has kept his same staff through 3 schools. No wonder he was able to hit the ground running at IU.

Not every coach gets the chance to take his staff with him.

May not be ready for head coach but jobs like OSU, Ped State, USC, Bama, ND don't pop off often
We could say Freeman wasn't ready for ND but made it work
So it'd make sense for Ped State to take the chance.. especially the major increase in recruiting talent
but man that would hurt... and I'd start drinking (I'm not a drinker)
My chips are on Brian Kelly

wasnt freeman a multi year coordinator though? not just 1 year?

There is at least one prediction market that has Hartline as a top 3 choice to land the PSU job.
I'd say the past 6 months should be an excellent reason to not put much stock in the PSU projections game.

'16 - Purdue DC
'17-20 - Cinci DC
'21 - Notre Dame DC

That last one is not only vital, but the real reason he got the job is the rarest of playoff berths for Cincy in a 4 team format.

I think Hartline takes a HC job this offseason, but I don’t think it’s Penn State.

He has GREAT relationships in South Florida from recruiting but also his time with the Dolphins.

I really don’t want to see him go (…hell, I wanted him as OSU HC and to let Day go prior to running the table in CFP).

I think he lands a job in the southeast that will play to his strengths of recruiting South Florida talent. JMO.

I most sincerely hope so

See above. If he has to fly the coop, just don't let it be Penn State. That would not be good for us.

More importantly, I don’t think it’d be good for him. That’s a tough job competing against OSU and ND for Midwest recruits. Throw in the lack of experience/success of proving you can run a high potency offense, I just think it’ll be a tough sell for a kid from South Florida Express to go to Happy Valley.

That said, I’m giving Hartline a big leg up against OSU if he’s competing for same recruits while working for UF or FSU…..

Stil don't see it. Lifelong Ohio boy with a young family. First year being a coordinator at the place he admittedly loves and has it rolling. I see him being a multi year guy here as OC. Like Venables did as a DC.

(Im always wrong)

That means you are due to be right on something soon.

Let's hope it's this.
