OC Arthur Smith (Official Thread)

Where I’ve landed on this hire now that the season approaches.

I wasn’t the biggest fan at first but, generally speaking it’s a good idea to bring in high level/NFL minds. He’s called the game at the highest level vs. the best players and minds in the sport. I think that brings a sense of having an “adult” in the room that Day needs.

The other point I’m picking up is that Smith brings “structure” and an offensive identity. Way way too many games last year (or years past) where it seems like Ohio State was just pulling random plays out of a hat - or coaches were taking turns calling series. Formations were all over and nothing was connected.

I think back to when Chip Kelly had a month to prepare in the playoffs and installed play designs that worked off each other. We need that.

If nothing else it seems like he should help with run game coordination and OLine play which pairs well with Day’s passing acumen. Consider me pretty optimistic he can figure out how to use the Ohio State talent and outscheme/call other college coaches.

Oh, and we have #4.

I think that this is exactly it. The "next level" here, in recognition of @BuckeyeNation27, the is unfucking the run game. To say that we were THE level is true to a large extent, but to have a more seasoned OC who understands the use of plays being used to set up other plays AND having the run game get moderately better will put us in contention at the end again. This time, I would think, with a different ending.

And there's always #4 this year.

Ryan Day Radio Show:

On Arthur Smith

  • Day said he’s enjoyed working with Arthur Smith so far.
  • Day said Smith has been crafting a great game plan for Texas.
  • “He knows what he’s doing. He’s really good schematically. He’s good with the guys. The calls come in quickly. He can identify what’s going on in game. It was a good start.”

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I don’t remember reading or hearing about Day ever having said this about Hartline - regarding the calls and schematic quality

Seems like Day just hired an extension of what he wanted already. Nothing much new here.

Smith is clearly calling plays from the sideline shots, but I’m positive Day has a hand in gameplan, general philosophy and maybe even some play input during the game. His side keeps failing against equal teams.

We’re still heavy TE, bunch formations and leaving a lot of talent at WR unused- with blocking issues all over. Saved by having #4 on a lot of plays.

I’m not the expert but it seems like the teams that employ the experts (IU, Miami, Texas) have a pretty good read on Sayin and this offense’s tendencies and weaknesses.

Time for some self-scouting or course correction because the sputtering around 17-20 points (even with some field position gifts) is not getting it done. Way too many empty drives - especially as things get tight.

Now that some time has passed, I turned on the radio just as Texass kicked the go ahead XP.

I heard the announcer say that there was 0:25 seconds left, my first thought was an Arthur Smith offense vs a Will Muschamp defense with that amount of time left meant that the Buckeyes would need a lot of good fortune to win this game.

I figured the game thread might’ve been heated in the moment and kept that thought to myself.

You would have been. I called Day a shriveled penis like a couple hours ago. I don’t even think the moment is truly over tbh
