Notre Dame (football only discussion)

You had me confused. Then I realized you were talking about the girl in the foreground. I was looking at the "banana rack" in the beginning, and couldn't figure out who was over her left shoulder.

17 years later, I wonder if those things have dropped at all?

I choose to believe that they have not.

Aidan Keanaaina Out For Spring With A Torn ACL
Notre Dame junior nose tackle Aidan Keanaaina will miss the remainder of the spring after suffering a torn ACL

Irish Breakdown has confirmed that Notre Dame junior nose tackle Aidan Keanaaina will miss the remainder of the spring after suffering a torn ACL.
Keanaaina injured his knee during the team's opening practice of the spring and it will require surgery. The timing of the injury will likely cost Keanaaina much of the 2022 fall campaign as well.
The junior nose tackle came to Notre Dame from Denver (Colo.) Mullen, where he was a four-star recruit. He chose Notre Dame over Ohio State, Michigan, Wisconsin, USC and others.
.
.
.
Keanaaina has yet to crack the rotation for the Irish but he did get his first legit playing time this past season, earning 33 snaps. The vast majority of those snaps came down the stretch for the Irish. He played nine snaps in the Fiesta Bowl and registered his first career tackle.

Friday at 4: By scheduling Tennessee State, Notre Dame met inevitable frustrations with welcome opportunity

Notre Dame playing an FCS opponent in the 2020s was probably inevitable. The coming expansion of the College Football Playoff will lengthen most Irish seasons, as well as alter scheduling dynamics across the country. Adding a competitive breather will be a symptom of that.

Notre Dame playing an FCS opponent in 2023 became needed when the Irish moved their date with Navy to Dublin. Either Notre Dame would have to burn one of two idle weeks in the literal first week of the broad season, or it would need to find an opponent to face on a short week with relatively short notice. Just as an example of that short notice: The Irish have played nine different non-MAC Group of Five opponents in the last 12 seasons. All of them already have games scheduled for Sept. 2, 2023, including trips to Texas (Rice), Auburn (UMass), USC (Nevada) and Texas A&M (New Mexico).

Considering Notre Dame plays Central Michigan in mid-September of 2023, director of athletics Jack Swarbrick was never likely to consider an additional MAC opponent on that schedule. The Irish have not double-dipped into a midmajor conference during Swarbrick’s time making the calendar.

That left the FCS.

It was inevitable.

NOTRE DAME FIGHTING IRISH
10998166.JPG

ESPN: "Marcus Freeman takes over amid a bright future and even bigger expectations. Of course, when are expectations at Notre Dame not grandiose? Freeman will be learning on the job next season and doing so without some key players who moved on to the NFL. That's never a good combination, which means Notre Dame's five-year stretch of winning 10 or more games could be in jeopardy in 2022."

Our take on Notre Dame: It's a "show-me" season for Freeman in his first as a head coach after a stellar decade as one of the nation's top assistants. The defensive guru inherits a talented roster built by the aforementioned Kelly and now gets to put his stamp and fingerprints on a storied program. Is the spot too big or is Freeman ready to perform?

Based on our preseason bowl projection for the Fighting Irish, we're buying stock in Freeman, his elite-level recruiting and what's happening in South Bend. It may not happen in 2022, but it's coming. The schedule, by contender standards, sets up for success if Notre Dame find its way after a treacherous opener at Ohio State. Win or lose there, the Fighting Irish will have a game on their schedule the selection committee pays close attention to with several more ahead against Clemson and USC, respectively. There are other first-year coaches nationally with easier schedules than what Freeman will endure, but few have a complete roster to win them like he possesses.

Former LSU football coach Ed Orgeron showed up in new LSU coach Brian Kelly's old stomping grounds on Tuesday, giving a pep talk to the Notre Dame team.

Wearing a gray hoodie, the Louisiana native showed off some of his trademark intensity as he addressed the Fighting Irish in South Bend.

"What a tremendous, tremendous university you have here," Orgeron said. "What a great coach and what a great coaching staff you have. Some of the best players in the country are right here in this room."

Orgeron tried to lure current Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman away from Cincinnati to be his defensive coordinator at LSU in early 2021, but he turned the job down and instead ended up in the same role in South Bend.

Freeman became the Notre Dame head coach when Kelly stepped down this past November to take over at LSU. Kelly replaced Orgeron, who wrapped up his time as LSU head coach at the end of the 2021 regular season.

Orgeron continues to be a big fan of Freeman, and that showed during his speech to the players on Tuesday.

"I don't know when it's going to happen, but with this staff and this team, you're gonna win it all," Orgeron said. "I don't know when it's gonna happen. I can't tell you that.

"How bad do you want it? You don't have to wait for it. Why does somebody else need to be better than y'all?"

Orgeron is on a trip to South Bend along with three of his sons who are trying to make their way up in the coaching profession - Parker Orgeron (analyst at Louisiana), Cody Orgeron (Miami intern) and Tyler Spotts-Orgeron (recently worked as an analyst at LSU).

As Orgeron wrapped up his speech, he indicated that he'll be interested to see how the Notre Dame squad plays this season after coming up just shy of the College Football Playoff in 2021.

"I am fired up. I can't wait to see you guys play," he said. "I'm going to be pulling for you guys, but remember this - this is your team, fight for it."

tl;dr Notre Dame is FUCKED!

Notre Dame to update victory song's lyrics to include 'daughters'

Notre Dame's storied fight song will now include recognition of the university's female students.

University president the Rev. John Jenkins announced Thursday night that the "Notre Dame Victory March" will change its lyrics to recognize the "daughters" of Notre Dame. The song, which has become synonymous with Fighting Irish football, included the line, "While her loyal sons are marching/Onward to victory." The lyrics now will read: "While her loyal sons and daughters/March on to victory." The new version was performed for the first time Thursday night at a gala on campus.
