Wake up the echoes: Irish will win national title
Notre Dame has genius of Weis, talent of Quinn and easy schedule

COMMENTARY

Brady Quinn is the best quarterback in the nation. … The schedule is friendly. … Charlie Weis is Einstein with a headset.

There, I said it. I'm on board.

Here's another Golden Dome-sized scoop of hype for your tailgate, Touchdown Jesus: Notre Dame will win the national title.

can't believe I just typed that. But it's true.

NOTRE DAME: 2006 NATIONAL CHAMPION. You thought the bookstores in South Bend already sold a lot of T-shirts. Holy mother of God!

It has been a long time coming. ND's last title came in 1988. Oh, I remember. I saw that team in action vs. Purdue. The Irish clobbered the Boilermakers, sent 'em back to West Lafayette in a Hefty bag.

It looked like ND would start minting national titles in the early 1990s. Didn't happen. Came close in 1993 -- but didn't happen.

But look at the Irish now. All shiny, sparkly and bright. I just want to spurt some Pledge on 'em, polish 'em up and stick on my mantel next to my son's bronzed baby booties.

That's some kinda special in my house. But this is some kinda special team.

Wow, who would have guessed that a subsidary of NBC would predict ND as National Champs? :shake:
The slappy emoticon was actually for the fact that this is another rambling mess by The Sporting News' Tom Dienhart, who last week simultaneously proclaimed "King Kirk" Ferentz the ruler of the Big-10 and a better coach than Jim Tressel, then published a piece detailing why Jim Tressel was the best big game coach in football.

WTF?! Does anyone aboard this plane speak jive?

So now, of course, Dienhart labels Weis "Einstein with a headset," despite the fact that Weis came out the loser in his match-up against the greatest big game coach.

If you think the MSNBC cut-up is funny, you should read the complete original:

Chas Weis? Oh, he's no pin-up boy. But, boy, can he coach. Weis' answer to E = mc2? Quinn to Jeff Samardzija. Oh, Chas will diagram some runs for Darius Walker behind an underrated line. But it's his Quinn to Samardzija formula -- with all of its variations -- that will propel Notre Dame back to its rightful place atop the national rankings -- and right into your heart.

Really, I don't know whether to laugh or vomit.

It sounds like he has perscribed to the "everyone is the best and no one loses" t-ball league way of thinking... either that or he's pulling the old ESPN pot-stirring stick to get fans reading his opinions.

My favorite part of the article you linked:
You don't have to know how to turn a coconut into a radio to figure out how to make a Notre Dame fan stutter. You say you've forgotten? Just cue the Fiesta Bowl tape! Ohhhh. Ugghhhh. The defense gets two thumbs down.
If and when ND runs into a team that can score this year they'll drop from the rankings of championship contender to 3-loss-Llloyd... good but never good enough. But if somehow they do make it to the national championship game they'll either run into a team that can outscore them or a defense that will shut them down, or OSU who will have both. :wink2:

The correct response to that is always "yes"

I'm also going to go with Georgia Tech over ND... I mean they have P.J Daniels/Bilbo/Johnson/and also Reggie Ball all returning...

I look at their defense and I'm honestly surprised at the number of Seniors this team has. 9 out of the 11 starters on Defense are all SENIORS. Let's be realistic here you don't have to completely shut down ND to win a game. You just have to get a stop here or there and move the ball on their horrible defense. With those weapons on offense and experience on defense I can't wait till the night of September 2nd. I just bugs the hell outta me that ND gets as much hype as they have. They have a good year last year, but in that course lose to the only 2 teams that are remotely talented but are dawned the next best thing. I think the media just needs to calm down and wait to see them play a decent team. Not to mention their schedule is once again horrible aside from USC/maybe even GT. They have to beat GT and of all teams MICHIGAN STATE before I'll buy into anything they're trying to sell... I mean ND hasn't beat Michigan State for a pretty good while now.

The problem is that that works both ways. If Notre Dame wins, then analysts will make a big deal of it like ND just shocked the world as an underdog, when in reality they'll only have beaten what we'll all come to find will be an underachieving GT team that goes 7-5, like they always do.
