Notre Dame (football only discussion)

I don't pretend to believe that this is a major deal...in fact it is as minor as it gets and sad that it makes national headlines, but since it is Mike Golic's kid, it makes the headlines.

Notre Dame tight end Will Yeatman and center Mike Golic Jr., son of an ESPN television host, were among 41 people arrested on misdemeanor alcohol charges early Sunday at a South Bend, Ind., home, police said.
Yeatman, 20, and Golic, 18, were charged with being minors consuming alcohol, Sgt. Al Taylor of the Indiana State Excise Police said. Others arrested included members of the Notre Dame lacrosse and soccer teams, he said.
Police made the arrests after Notre Dame returned to South Bend after a 23-7 loss Saturday at Michigan State.
Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis released a statement Sunday night saying he was "made aware of the situation late this afternoon and am currently looking into the matter."

Not that it matters much, but were they the only two football players arrested? If so, I think the tone is more "hey, two football players got arrested" than "hey, Mike Golic got arrested". In either case, it's not a big deal and Chuck won't do anything about it.

Yeatman's second issue with drinking, he will be gone.

Let's give Charlie some credit here for taking some action. :)

Weis: Yeatman won't play with charges looming

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Notre Dame tight end Will Yeatman can practice but can't play until prosecutors decide whether to formally press alcohol-related charges against him, coach Charlie Weis said Tuesday.
"Until further notice, I've decided to hold Will Yeatman from competition until his matter is resolved," Weis said.
Yeatman, 20, and Irish center Mike Golic Jr., 18, were among 37 arrested at a weekend party in South Bend following a 23-7 loss at Michigan State.
Yeatman faced preliminary charges of consumption of alcohol by a minor, false informing and resisting arrest. Golic faced a preliminary charge of consumption of alcohol by a minor, St. Joseph County Police Sgt. William Redman said.
Prosecutors are reviewing police reports before deciding whether to file formal charges.
Weis said any punishment Golic, the son of ESPN television host and former NFL player Mike Golic, will face will be handled internally. The case involving Yeatman is different, though, because he was suspended from spring football practice and from the men's lacrosse team after he pleaded guilty in February to drunken driving and reckless driving for driving on a campus sidewalk. The plea agreement said if Yeatman stayed out of trouble for a year, the drunken-driving charge would be dismissed and he would be sentenced only for reckless driving.

ND became bowl-eligible today, so I thought I would repost the list of teams that have won a bowl since Notre Dame's last bowl win (plus a little update).

Credit to HailToMichigan (I believe). :)

Air Force, Alabama, Arizona, Arizona State, Arkansas, Auburn, Boise State, Boston College, Bowling Green, BYU, California, Central Michigan, Cincinnati, Clemson, Colorado, Colorado State, Connecticut, East Carolina, Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida State, Fresno State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Marshall, Maryland, Memphis, Miami, Miami (Ohio), Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Missouri, Navy, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, NC State, North Carolina, Northern Illinois, North Texas, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Oregon State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Rutgers, San Jose State, South Carolina, South Florida, Southern Miss, Stanford, Syracuse, TCU, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Toledo, Troy, Tulane, Tulsa, UCLA, UNLV, USC, Utah, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Washington, Washington State, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

That's 88 teams.

There's currently 119 FBS (Div 1-A) teams (Western Kentucky is in the "transition" phase and will make it 120 in 2009)

Notre Dame is not listed (obviously).

So as of now, the 30 teams remaining:

Akron, Arkansas St., Army, Ball St., Baylor, Buffalo, Duke, Eastern Michigan, Florida International, Houston, Idaho, Indiana, Kent St., LA Lafayette, LA Monroe, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee St., New Mexico St., Northwestern, Ohio, Rice, San Diego St., SMU, Temple, UAB, UCF, Utah St., UTEP, Vanderbilt, Western Michigan.

Bowl-eligible teams are in bold. There's probably another 4 or 5 teams that are 1 win away from being bowl-eligible. Obviously, not all of them are going to get into a bowl, let alone win...but I think there's a good chance that another 4 could get knocked off the list, given that Notre Dame loses their bowl game. Only downside is that Notre Dame might have a evenly matched bowl opponent this year and win.

Nonetheless, still fun to track.

Scratch NC State...they've won 3 since then. Scratch Northern Illinois, they won one in 2004.

Cotton, Gator, Sun bowls still interested in Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) -- Despite some struggles down the stretch, Notre Dame is still drawing interest from the Cotton, Gator and Sun bowls heading into its final two games.
"The great thing about the system the way it is now is you can really afford to wait until the whole season is over before making a decision," Cotton Bowl president Rick Baker said.
The Irish (6-4) are 19 1/2-point favorites against Syracuse (2-8) on Saturday and will be heavy underdogs a week later against sixth-ranked USC (9-1). And although neither the Cotton Bowl nor the Gator Bowl has ever awarded a berth to a five-loss team, the presidents of both bowls said a loss to the Trojans wouldn't necessarily eliminate the Irish from consideration.
"I don't think we necessarily look just at the records," Baker said. "We're going to look at the matchup and the history that we have with the programs that we're considering. That's not a policy that we don't take a 7-5 team, that's just the way that it's happened."
The Cotton Bowl usually pits a Big 12 team vs. a Southeastern Conference team. But the Cotton Bowl can select Notre Dame over an SEC team once in the next two years.
Notre Dame has played in the Cotton Bowl seven times, including winning the 1977 national championship there by upsetting top-rated Texas 38-10. At the end of the 1993 season, the Irish beat Texas A&M 24-21, their last bowl victory.
Since then, they have lost an NCAA-record nine straight bowl games.
At 8-4, fresh off a win over USC, Notre Dame would be at the top of the Gator Bowls' wish list, president Rick Catlett said. At 7-5, the Gator Bowl would likely have to chose between taking either Notre Dame, Nebraska (7-4) or No. 11 Oklahoma State (9-2), which still must face No. 5 Oklahoma (9-1).
"At 7-5, they're still Notre Dame. We've never taken a five-loss team in our history, so there would be a lot of discussion," Catlett said. "But I think with a victory over Syracuse this week Notre Dame is still very high on our list."
If the Gator Bowl passes on Notre Dame, Bernie Olivas, executive director of the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, is ready to invite the Irish even if they lose their last two games.
"Notre Dame is coveted by everybody, including by us," he said. "We'd probably be excited by a 6-6 Notre Dame team. El Paso is like 80 percent Catholic, 80 percent Hispanic, and you wouldn't believe how many calls we're getting here: 'Is Notre Dame coming? Is Notre Dame coming?"'
The only possible glitch there would be if the Gator Bowl takes an ACC team, the Sun Bowl must take a Big 12 team. If that happens, the Irish would have to wait and see what bowls go unfilled by conference affiliation before determining what their bowl options would be. But Catlett said if the Gator Bowl doesn't invite the Irish.

There is absolutely no way to adequately describe the apefucking of a lifetime that Notre Dame would get in the Cotton Bowl. Likely opponents: Oklahoma or Texas.

Yeah, that would go well.
