(Bad) Luck of the Irish.
The biggest victims of Notre Dame's poor play during the college football season may not be on the team, or in the stands, or even members of the university.
While NBC may only air Notre Dame home games each year, the staggering ineptitude of the Fighting Irish football team has led to staggeringly low ratings for NBC. Saturday afternoon's clash between the Irish and arch-rival USC drew a 2.1/5 overnight, down 73% from the 7.9 overnight the same match-up drew in 2005, the last time NBC aired the game, and down 78% from the 9.6 overnight the same match-up drew last year in primetime on ABC.
Through four games, NBC is averaging a 2.3 metered market rating, down 36% from a 3.6 for the first four games last year.
The 2.1 overnight for Saturday's game is the lowest for a Notre Dame/USC match-up since at least 1998.
